As per twitter. I haven't seen details yet.

Happy to see this get done. Cheap fourth line help is good to have. He's an upgrade over a lot of the guys we've tried in that slot (Gazdic, Klinkhammer, etc).

Most overblown storyline though? We need Pakarinen and Korpikoski because we drafted Puljujarvi. Sorry, but if the Oilers really need to, they can hire a translator for the rookie that doesn't eat up a roster spot. I'm happy to have those guys here if they're in the top 13 or 14 forwards that we have, but I don't want guys on the team simply so they can be babysitters.

Chiarelli does it again. Pakarinen was set to be qualified at $884,625. He instead signs for $725,000 (according to GeneralFanager.com).

Now a one-way deal, rather than a two-way pact like his last one, but he was only in the AHL for 4 games last year. He's unlikely to be demoted, and if he is, at least he doesn't count against the cap at all.

I'm still not used to seeing competent negotiating coming from Oilers management. Just blows me away.

Hey, if it keeps Puljujarvi in a comfort zone, I'm all for it.

Didn't Joni Pitkanen live with his mother here?

I played with a guy when I was 16 who was from Russia and moved here at 12 years old. His English was decent and at practice or in the dressing room he did just fine with occasional need to explain something a second time.
Once games started he struggled as the coaches/teammates often spoke quicker and didnt have time to repeat themselves. The second season I played with him we ended up with a guy on our team who was born in Canada to Russian parents and Russian 1 improved greatly on the ice.
This could have been comfort or the extra communication he got from Russian 2 on his line but it definitely helped.
Now year three I didnt play with either player but player 2 moved on as well and player 1 regressed and his english had only improved a small amount

A couple of thoughts I have based on my tiny sample size.
- it definitely helped to remove the language barrier at game time
- there was less of an incentive for player A to improve his English
- I think having countryman around Puljujarvi isn't bad thing but not required as living day to day life in EDM and at the rink his English will improve quickly
- his English isnt non existant, just not that strong yet
- I am against a translator unless he cant keep up in meetings, the locker room, practice etc as it becomes crutch for some.
- Swedes and Fins tend to assimilate in NA faster than most Euro's

Also, we have been spoiled by the Finns and Swedes who come over already speaking flawless English, so one who isn't fluent comes as a surprise. Even at the Juniors, these guys give interviews and can sound more well-spoken than your average North American.
