Need to win.
I thought the pairings of Laggesson - Larsson and Russell - Bear didn't have a great night the previous game so they need to be better. Please break up McD and Leon. I know they are awesome together, the things they can do are do fun to watch, last game they produced more than enough offence, but Nuge's line was brutal. Nuge can not center a top 6 line, it's just so obvious. His line was on for both goals in the 3rd, got crushed all game long. They big 2 have to be broken up.

I saw some bloggers on twitter after the game discussing who the Oilers need to get to put with Nuge so maybe he can play passable second line center. If you are having to scour the league in search of wingers who can drive a line and basically act as the center, all so you can shelter Nuge enough at center so he doesn't get crushed, then maybe he's just not a top 6 freaking center.

Line I would try for tonight.

JP - McD - Kassian - Europeans often can play both sides relatively easily. Kassian did show he could produce plus he's skating well and has jump.
Nuge - Leon - Yam - This is for no reason other than to get Nuge away from being a center and maybe get something out of him 5 on 5. People will look at his points and see 26 in 35 games which is a 61pt in 82 pace. So on first glance, decent. But he's only got 11 5 on 5 points while playing mostly with McD. That's just not good enough.

Jesus - that's butter on a summer sahara day soft 2nd line. They're going to get stomped. Hopefully McDrai are challenging Sittler's single game record tonight.

It's an interesting strategy by Tippett here. Turris has been disappointing all season long, so let's try promoting him up the lineup in a game against the best second line in the division. I'm curious to see how the gamble plays out.

We do need to see a little more from that second line. Not just less goals against, but more attacking and chances. It definitely is the one issue with loading up the first line - but even so, we should have adequate depth that we're not just struggling to hold on whenever the first line is off the ice.

Toronto is a strong, deep team, but it's not just them. The team has had several stretches of multiple games where no one outside the top lines scores any goals. We need someone else to chip in a little.

I don't like that 2nd line but more because of its potential complete lack of game management ability. The Oil can get enough offence out of Connor and Drai as they demonstrated last game- the problem was keeping the Leafs' O neutralized for the ENTIRE game instead of just the first 2 periods and part of the 3rd.

Does Holland just go out and try to trade for a guy who can solidify the 2nd line and increase the overall depth down the 3rd and 4th lines?

If the team wants to keep McD and Leon together, then Holland has to go out and find a winger who can on his own turn Nuge into a decent 2nd line center. In order for Nuge to be a decent 2nd line center, you need a winger who can drive a line and basically do the majority of what a center is supposed to do. I don't even know who that winger is, what would be the cost to get him and if it's even possible? Some people might bring up Hall but I am not so sure he's that guy anymore and how do you fit 8 mill?

We running out of 2nd lines to try before we just stick with Nuge-Drai-Yams for a while again? :)

This is getting weird.

If guys like RDO are stating ad nauseam how pathetic a player Nuge is as a 2nd line center and basically as a player, I don't understand the best center in the league and arguably the 2nd best center in the league being on one line for more than situational play. Shouldn't they be driving their own lines and uplifting plugs like Nuge? I don't get it either.

Then you run out a 2nd line with a little and 2 mid size, similar to last game. You've got to have one guy. Put Kass on the 2nd line if you're going to do this and play someone on their off wing. My guess is that if the defensive miscues don't happen this next game, there might be more success in the offensive zone.

Clearly the team feels they don't have enough help for McDavid in that situation - although I'm not sure why. Puljujarvi's been good up there, and McDavid can create on his own.

I am a little worried we're going to sell the farm to bring in a LW for the top six. Most years, I'd be all for that, but with goaltending such a question mark, I worry we could throw away a good prospect or top pick and end up with just a 6 or 7 game series for the effort when goaltending implodes.

Team was great last year with McDavid playing with Ennis and Archibald hehe. I think we can do a little better than that this year if we put DRY together.

But who knows, maybe McDavid is sick of carrying plugs and it's a no go. Or Tippett is being like McLellan and the media asked him too much about trying it so it's now a blacklisted option.

Looking forward to seeing Evan Bouchard playing wing with Nuge eventually! Or yeah, we toss the 1st and prospects for Hall.

They’re not doing anything with goaltending till the offseason. I think it’s time we drop the dream. It’s not happening (barring broken neck from Schmiddy before the TD, and even then it won’t happen).

I know Adam will hate this. But Jones, who’s behind Nurse, Laggy, and Russell (who are all under contract next year) while there’s Broberg and Sammy coming, is a trade chip that should be used if able to land a winger to play with Drai or McDavid. There’s so much uncertainty with the right side, expiring deals and whatnot, I don’t move a RHD.

It makes so much sense for Jones to be that trade chip.

It makes so much sense for Jones to be that trade chip.

I see articles that say similar stuff each year when the Oilers have an issue at a position:

"Nobody trades top four d-men."

"You'd never be able to move that salary"

"No way to get a player like that and stay under the cap"

And then other teams do exactly those things. This version of the Oilers can't beat the Leafs, which means they won't be a contender in the playoffs without adjustments because TO isn't great, only good. Somebody will take Koskinen. Give him to Buffalo in the Hall deal. This season is Edmonton's best chance to get to a conference final and maybe more.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

But they won't see any gate revenue from a playoff run so why not save the assets and wait another year?

This season is Edmonton's best chance to get to a conference final and maybe more.

But they won't see any gate revenue from a playoff run so why not save the assets and wait another year?

Good point. it's a dollars and cents decision.

And McDavid will probably be even better next year.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Lines for tonight...

Drai-McDavid-Puljujarvi
Turris-Nuge-Yam
Ennis-Haas-Kassian
Shore-Khaira-Archibald

Schmiddy gets the start, signs pointing to D remaining the same as Saturday.

We running out of 2nd lines to try before we just stick with Nuge-Drai-Yams for a while again? :)

This is getting weird.

At some point does all this promise that Jones supposedly has, not have to happen on the ice? Lagesson is no world beater but he's playing because the coaches know exactly what to expect from him shift after shift, game after game. So they can game plan for that. Tippett showed a willingness to sit Russell. He did not earn the job out of camp so he sat multiple games, then he's also been scratched in the season. So there is opportunity for Jones, he just hasn't grabbed it on multiple occasions.

The Oilers should be moving into winning is the most important thing now so they should be playing who is playing the best. I am not a fan of Russell, my preference is for him not to play but he's been better than Jones. If Jones can't beat out Russell and Lagesson for playing time, that's on him.

It's foolish to trade someone in the lineup when you can trade someone who's not in the lineup. Jones may or may not have a long term career in Edmonton, but moving him ahead of the playoffs to a non-playoff team makes little sense. His value is at an all-time low currently because the Oilers he's off his rookie deal, and we have been using him as a 6/7/8 guy. The only thing he has going for him is that he's cheap. We can get more for Samorukov now than we likely can for Jones now - so no one is giving us a top six winger for him.

The goaltending isn't going to be fixed. Given that, I don't know that it makes a lot of sense to make a big bet for a couple of assets at the trade deadline this year. The management can feel that they've got playoffs for Connor and Leon (although it is more that Connor and Leon got playoffs for the management), so they may see that as mission accomplished.

I think it's a waste of any season now where we aren't Cup contenders, but the chances that Smith or Koskinen can carry this team deep in to the post-season aren't good, so maybe keep your powder dry and swing for the fences in the summer? I think the team is once again fooling themselves if they think the goalie box checked...similar to how they fooled themselves previously with Ben Scrivens, Mikko Koskinen, etc. over similar hot streaks.

I don't disagree with you about our G, but Smith CAN sometimes be effective, and if we are able to get someone like Hall for spare parts, I say do it. He would instantly transform that 2nd line, if not the whole forward corps.

Would you give up a 1st round pick and Samorukov or Broberg for him though?

I just don't like the odds of Smith battling his way through four playoff rounds.

No. I don’t think Smith would hold up for four playoff rounds. He could get through a couple though.

And I don’t know what I would give up. Not a ton, but something. On the one hand I don’t think we can contend for the cup, but on the other we need some success. Not by completely mortgaging our future, but if a pick and one of those guys does the trick? Maybe.

I get the idea of the nuclear line but I do hope they switch it up at some point in the game. They can't afford having Nuge's line getting their lunch money taken like the Tavares line did last game. Maybe between Turris and Nuge, together they can be a second line center than doesn't get schooled but Turris has been lousy as a center so I don't have my hopes up very high. I have to think at some point, if Turris wants to have a chance to play on a semi regular basis, he need to come out with some good games.

Nice to see our reward for Montreal getting COVID is that we have to play them tomorrow on a B2B after Montreal has been resting. Good job NHL icon_thumbsup
