Players picked Matthews this year too. It is what it is - people get bored of writing the same name every year, so they try to find reasons to swim against the stream. Matthews had a great season, so he gets some hardware. I wouldn't lose any sleep about it. McDavid is still clearly the better player and now the Centre of the Universe feels appeased.
Hopefully it inspires McDavid to even more greatness next year - although he's still going to have the same issue. He could lap the competition in scoring and they'll just think that's ho-hum because that's what he does, but look at this guy with 98 points for a team that's right on the edge of the playoff picture!

The league has effed 97 over his entire career because of how their lotto balls fell. This will only serve to motivate Connor and probably make him dislike the centre of the universe even more.

He's missed two opportunities now to be named captain Canada at the Olympics too. I think that is a huge miss as those outside of Canada haven't gotten much opportunity to see McDavid. He isn't mainstream.
It's too bad that 2026 will be in Italy instead of North America (thanks Calgary). McDavid will still be an Oiler in Feb 2026, so we'll be front and center even if it is time delayed.
