They resigned Persson to another year. He's a 24 yr old, right shot, puck moving, offensive dman. He's got 22 pts in 35 games in the Swedish hockey league. I have to assume he will be coming over next season.

Worth a shot, minimal cap space going forward and could provide what we’ve lacked on the back end. 1M for next season, is RFA at season’s end.

Led his team in D scoring in 2017-18, his rookie season, and is leading them again this season.

But who, signed him? Gretz?!

That’s a genius move. Cue building confidence music, so that fans are okay when he becomes FT GM.

Listening to Stauffer today, MacT is ‘in charge’ of European scouting... cue the MacT for GM push from Bobby Nicks

Why would MacT, living in Edmonton, be in charge of European scouting? Why not get a European in Europe to be that guy. We do know the team has Skype...

Ha. Why can't he just watch games and talk to prospects over the internet? Think of all the money saved of air travel, hotels, meals, and french red wine!

This is fine.

If he lights up the AHL next year, it was Gretz and/or MacT. If he fails, it was Chia.

AHL? You know if he comes over he’s got that 3RD spot locked up, with only Lars and Bouch ahead of him icon_wink

To me it's a no brainer signing in that there is no risk. Lots of really good dmen come from the Swedish league. This guy is supposedly one of their better ones offensively. Why not?

Oh for sure. He’s appatently received high praise in scouting reports of late and lots of chatter expecting him to come over to NA before the end of the season. His club team plays their final regular season game March 14, though his team is currently in 9th and looking at a play in for the final playoff spot.

To me, it's no different than every year teams falling all over themselves to sign these college free agents. He's playing pro hockey in a good league against men and doing well vs playing against a bunch of kids. I don't know if he actually makes it but worth a shot.

This is the kind of signing that no one cares about in any but the hot bed markets like Edmonton. He's got a chance at being an NHLer...and it's a reasonable gamble with little risk. But it's not much of a story.

It's like how the sportswriters like to compare every Swedish defenceman coming in to the league as possibly another Nick Lidstrom...

Bouchard not far off, there's not a lot of extra room for right shot d men on this team right now. I thought he looked like he could be a decent player given more time to get use to the NHL game too but.... only so many spots.

Holland listed off all the dmen ahead of Persson, everyone of them I don't think anyone would argue with. Persson wasn't making the Oilers. So what is the point in keeping a guy who won't be with the team next year taking ice time away from others on the farm. There isn't. I am sure if they could have got rid of manning instead they would have.

IIRC, Manning comes off the books at years end, while Persson is RFA.

I don't like this. You let Persson battle for a spot next training camp with Bouchard and Benning. Not a move that needed to happen today.

Not every day you can get an ECHL goalie though.

Definitely an odd one. Like he wants to manage our expectations of his work :)

Two things here:

1) There's always time to get another tweener defenceman between this year and next. They may hope that if Green shows well he'll even sign another deal. As a free agent, Persson isn't re-signing for next year if he doesn't think there's room for him on the NHL team and barring injuries, he's got a lot of right shot guys ahead of him he'd need to beat out, even if the Oilers don't bring back Green or sign anyone else this summer.

2) He was on a one-way deal, so he's an expensive ticket on the AHL roster. One of several actually - Manning, Granlund, Jurco all on one-way deals too. At some point, the salaries tip the balance between profit and loss for your minor league team, and whether the Oilers can afford it or not, no one likes to lose money unnecessarily. I think that's probably even more exacerbated by the team failing to sell-out on so many nights this year. They have been working on forecasts that assume every seat is filled (or at least paid for) for years, so it's likely been a wake up call on the team finances to have some top line stress. That tends to focus you on controlling your costs where you're able.

Added benefit, Holland gets to look like a good guy, sending a player somewhere he may actually have a chance to live his NHL dream. Although poor Persson, if he gets a shot to play, suddenly will have three chances to get lit up by McDavid & Draisaitl now before the end of the season...

He sure does but who's taking Manning?

On the left, Oilers have
Klef
Nurse
Jones
lagesson
Russell
Samorukov
Broberg

On the right, Oilers have
Larson
Bear
Bouchard
Benning

I didn't include a Swede or 2 I think who are right handed who they have to decide on. I think Berglund has to sign a contract to at least be in the AHL or they have to let him go.

Russell is the only guy over 30 and he's probably gone next season. Larson I think it 27. Klef might be 26. Everyone else is 25 and under. Most are 23 and under. Where does Persson fit? On the right he's 5th on he depth chart. Right now with Green he's 6th.

Persson turns 26 in a few weeks. At best he's #5 on the depth chart on the right side. His time it now. So why would you keep him even if he is an RFA. It wouldn't shock me if he quietly aksked to be traded. He would never play for the Oilers.
