Well, the winds of change continue to blow through Oil Country. The team announced it signed Dylan Larkin's undrafted older brother out of Division III NCAA UMass - Boston.

https://www.tsn.ca/report-oilers-sign-udfa-larkin-for-2018-1 9-1.1017745

The good news? Larkin lights up Division III. He's 6'3, 192 lbs and has 24-22-46 in 27 games of UMass-Boston this season. The bad news is that it's Division III...it's worlds away from the NHL. Not a single player on Larkin's team has been drafted by an NHL squad.

I think this falls in to a similar category as all the minor league signings from last summer. A plug who probably should be on an AHL-only contract at best, who does little more than take up a contract spot. But good news! He might be a little bit quick if he's anything like his brother! Maybe...no one can really confirm this, because people don't usually spend a lot of time watching players this far out of the orbit.

Really? This is your answer to adding more speed to the line-up? This reeks.

We just hate having free contract spots on our 50 limit.

Back to 46/50.

I expect a couple more mid-20's guys 5 leagues below NHL to be signed too. Gotta keep some company for JD Dudek. Oh, and still gotta sign Dudek of course.

Speaking of JD. Was anyone else impressed by now quickly and well Chia said his name in the post-trade presser? JD Dudek. Said it like it was a household name. Must have been practicing a lot before coming out.

Hey, maybe I should put the pads back on and come out of retirement. It's never too late to make the Oilers, right?

All you need is an "in". Too bad my brother is slow as $h!t and my dad doesn't work for the Oilers.

The thing about this signing is that it probably didn't need to be an NHL contract. Does anyone think Larkin wouldn't have accepted an AHL deal? That's a great next step in his career. Then if he lights it up in the AHL, you can sign him to an NHL deal the next year. They did this with Mark Arcobello and that worked wonderfully for both parties.

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Who is this guy and why was he signed from a Div III team? Way to burn up our available contracts, no?

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

Maybe they see something in him. Maybe they think they can get Dylan Larkin in trade or by (ugh) signing him to an offer sheet, and this makes him happier.

The contract thing doesn't really matter. Deadline has passed and some of the other will come off July 1. This one doesn't even take effect until then anyway. Everybody just needs to chill out and wait and see.

Every contract matters. You only get 50 of them, so why give out two-way deals to guys you don't think have any chance of playing on your NHL team? And if you think he's making the NHL team, then why at age 24 has he never garnered any attention before?

Maybe he's the best player in Div III NCAA, but if he's spent the last four years playing against inferior opposition, is he going to be able to make a jump not just to the AHL, but to the NHL in the next couple of years? To me, it seems like a waste of a spot, and at some point almost every season we're staring down the barrel of 50 contracts and having to pass up some bonafide player on waivers because we can't afford to take on another deal. This kind of questionable signing is part of the reason for that.

Colin Larkin is one of Bakersfield's first cuts. Sent to the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL.

Shows how fast you can go down the ladder. But, if you can go down that fast, obviously you can move up just as quick.
