Any word about Souray's wrist? One of the few talented guys we have (floating as he has been, still talented) and he gets hurt twice by Iginla? #12 is an Oiler kiler for sure!

I guess Iginla is Souray's kryptonite. icon_thumbdown

This time last year, could you have even imagined this team being worse? Wow....

I'm glad we have a chance at the #1 draft pick, but OMFG, somebody out there really needs to grow a pair. Gagner, Hemsky, Penner, Smid, Potulny, Brule... gut the rest (other than MPS, Eberle and the #1/2).

What luck. Now I bet the Oilers trade Vish instead, and he was the one I was hoping the Oilers would keep to build the defense around next year.

Good old Souray, not only has he played horribly, now we cant trade him.

No that was Souray. Saying he'd waive his no trade and then is dumb enough to drop the mitts in a no win game given his injury history? Fail.

More like he was showcasing himself to other teams (or even his own) that even in a one sided loss, he still has some pride. Unfortunate that he put himself in that situation, wrong place, wrong time.

Maybe that wrist brace had something to do with it?

At least he gives a damn (at that moment)...fricken Captain Penalty, hello no show.

What sucks so much is the way he was preserving himself for a trade by doing the bare minimum out there. It was so obvious. Then in a fight it all turns out for not anyway as he breaks his wrist against Iginla of all people.

No, the lack of Oilers' standing up for Souray and beating the livin' bejesus out of Iginla months ago forced Souray to fight. For Pete's sake, Gerry frickin' Cheevers started beating on Pat frickin' Quinn after Quinn creamed Orr!!!!! And who stood up for Souray???? Is Comrie our only fighter????

let's get real here. After that game in which Souray was badly hurt I warned you all that it would fall on Souray himself to take care of business. That's the way men, true warriors if you will, operate.

I mean, you either get this or you don't.

There's no man or warrior that gets bent over every night. Souray fighting in the 3rd period of a blowout is being more of an idiot than a man or a warrior.

There have been plenty of opportunities for the Oilers to show some sack and exact retribution on the likes of Iginla, Phaneuf, and Regehr.....hell, any Flame. I'm not talking "wanna fight" or "lets go", either. Something memorable should have happened to a Flame or two tonight, but it didn't happen.

There is nothing to lose for any of these players. Who the fack among the Oilers should be afraid of a match penalty or a suspension?

Many teams would be be absolutely beside themselves that they're the opponents' "bitc--s" game in and game out, but not this team. This team has no sack.

You are correct.
You don't have to fight a guy if you can't fight, but you can drive him into the boards (legally) and hurt him worse. Its amazing how many Oilers get injured from cheap shots and there are never any going off from the other team.

If a team thinks it can Tee-Off on your players, especially your skilled guys (Hemsky) and not have to pay for it by someone taking out one of their top line players, then they'll do it, and often.

Someone should have took a bead on Boumeester while he was getting a puck and laid him out.

An eye for an eye.

That's the way it works in the NHL, its preventative medicine.

Prime example tonight, Bruins V Kings. Kopitar gets laid out by a clean but predatory check and within seconds there are two or three Kings throwing punches and ready to go.
Check out the clip.

This behavior doesnt eliminate hard hits, but it sends a clear and definitive message that if you cheap shot our top end guys, you are going to be in a war.

Now Imagine that was Hemsky or Gagner in the same position? What would the reaction be from the Oilers? Better yet what has the reaction been for the last 4 years from the Oilers? Zero.

Dont want to risk taking a two minute instigator penalty FFS? And they wonder why they have so many injuries. Guys run around against the Oilers with no fear of an kind of retaliation what so ever. Its pathetic. This is leadership from the top down. Weather its the coach, the captain, or the GM. The message to every team in the league is 'go ahead, step right up, and crush our only offensive players'. There will be no reaction.

Last night was a prime example AFH.

Lubomir Visnovsky was absolutely hammered into the boards by Glencross. It was a hit of "MacIntyre on Boyd" proportions. But it was like it never even happened. Nothing. Like the whole roster is afraid of Glencross or something. Didn't even have to be Glencross laying on the ice. Anyone would have been fine. Things like that must make Lubomir feel real safe out there. Must really make him feel wanted or part of the team. With any luck he will be gone March 3rd. He doesn't deserve that crap.

All it did was reinforce the message that hammering our stars and getting them off their game is encouraged. THAT made me sick to my stomach last night.

This team is riddled with frikkin pussies.

Good point. I just went with the Kopitar one because I had just seen it on the highlights this morning and it just illustrated to me the most glaring difference between the way good teams/organizations treat their star players vs the way the Oilers do.

Same thing with the hit you mentioned. Im not sure where this philosophy started or why it is so prevalent here, but it has been going on for years. I guess it has to start with management for acquiring the type of players that either are afraid or unwilling to play with some heart. Coaching maybe for sitting out one of the very few players we have with any gumption against a team who very clearly will try to physically dominate us. Or for stupidly placing the importance of an instigator penalty or at the very worst one lost game above and beyond the physical and mental health of the team. Or player leadership. When the your team is led by Moreau and Horcoff...Well thats a pretty big problem.

See, I LOVED that reaction by Simmonds. No hesitation. You just hammered my bread and butter, you're going down. I don't care about "clean hits" and all that stuff - your star get pasted, do something about it. Put the league on notice that running OUR stars gets you hurt.

Exactly. Instigator penalty? Who cares. The Oilers for the last number of years have lacked the ability to see the forest for the trees. Big picture. Protecting your star players and making other teams accountable is far more important than a penalty, a game or even a couple of game suspension (highly unlikely).

You know what? I'd rather see less fighting the with the perpetrator as a response. These guys will generally square up and fight all day....meanwhile Hemsky's out for the season.....what's wrong with THIS equation?

If anything happens to the perpetrator it should be an injury. Otherwise, there should be an event that gets an Oiler 5 and a game. Or....an Oiler grabs a small, skilled player from the other team and pummels him....and gets an instigator. You tell the other bench that their best player got ragdolled/injured because of the cheapshot that cost your best player his season, or cost your best D-man 19 games with a concussion. Draw a direct relationship from one to the other.

I'm not sure why this doesn't happen....why the Oilers don't protect their assets in this fashion. There's SO much at stake in terms of their season, and it affects the very core of the hockey team, for seasons to come.

We've seen the dominos fall time and time again because of long-term injuries, and yet it's apparently not in the players, the coaching staff, or management to realize that league rules are not protecting the players. Sooner or later it has to become part of the culture of this team to take care of their own.

let's get real here.

They have accepted losing, worst disease a sports team can acquire, not sure if you can cure this while remaining on the same team, only chance for the player is to move somewhere else and try to learn to win, and the only hope for the team is to get fresh troops.

I'm sure that 44 will still be in play come trade deadline day... which is likely when he would have been traded anyways.

If anything, this just softens us even more down the stretch (if that's possible) and further solidifies our last place finish.

We are still on the path to redemption people, it's just a dark and dreary path.

I had to laugh during Horcoff's post game audio when asked what they do now and he says - "Well, you rebuild and go from there" Freudian slip methinks!!?

Well, there are many low moments in recent Oilers history, but tonight has to at least rate among the very lowest of the low. What an embarassment.

Calgary does not deserve to be a playoff hockey team, but looks like a bunch of world-beaters vs. the sorry-a_s Edmonton Oilers.

#12 is pretty much the only threat for the Flames, and the Oilers can do NOTHING to contain ONE player. I expect the Flames to go back to losing more than they win, because they're not that good.

Did any one of the Oilers give a s--t tonight? Gagner maybe? Brule? Horcoff and Souray fought but otherwise pretty much looked apathetic. Basically, this was a no-show by 95% of the hockey team. Not one player had enough pride in himself or his team to exact any retribution on any of the Flames who had it coming. I don't know how the Oilers can look themselves in the mirror.

Good luck to Tambellini, I can't think of more than a 3-4 assets the Oilers have that any GM would actually want on his roster.

The team is just a shell, there's no heart to it.

It really sinks in when all you see is red ink for January 2010.

This team can't be as bad as their playing. Their all quitters. Not my style in life.

I can't wait until the house is clean from top to bottom......if it happens.

How do you even express opinions about them anymore?

I feel ripped off of two years of a hockey season with this one of course being worse than last season.

Can't wait for the Olympics......after that the season it can't end soon enough for me.

Is it possible for a team to just forfeit the remainder of the season? I don't want this team to play anymore. They need to just send everyone home and start fresh with a new class in 2010/2011.

Shouldn't have scratched Stortini this game. One of the three guys that actually tries is sitting in the press box?

I read the first page of this moronic thread and was so angry I threw up in my glass. We sound like friggin canucks fans for christ sake. Tambo is not the problem. Quinn is not the problem. MacT was the problem and look what happened when he left. I'm almost starting to think the idiotic fans of this team are the real problem here. Give this franchise a chance to rebuild. DON'T trade Souray for nothing. We did that with Pronger and look what that got us. Patience is a virtue and it seems to be lacking in these forums. Where are we going to go? Are we jumping ship to another team? Hell no. From the exciting start we had to the unbelievable mid season woes, I have never been more excited to be an Oil fan in my life. We have an opportunity to draft first overall! Have we ever done that? No. We have the opportunity to tank the next season also. I'm thrilled about this. I expect to watch us lose. I expect to see us fall in the standings every night and for once in my life I am happy that the mighty Oil are as bad as they are. And hopefully in four to five years i can say that I was a fan in the worst season we have ever had and I'm still a fan to this day. I bleed copper and blue and always will.

Who is advocating trading Souray for nothing?

Most of us are very devoted fans. That's why this is so nervewracking. Sure, a lot of us have the silver lining in our sights but there's still a lot of season to get through yet.

Don't get all high and mighty. You're criticizing people for essentially sharing the same sentiment as you. The FANS are the problem? Please. I personally couldn't be more happy about the prospect of a #1 pick. My dissent does not make me a less loyal fan than you. I could even use some useless backward logic to state otherwise, but that's just silly.

A lack of patience does not make us akin to Canuck fans. I resent that. There isn't a lot of unfair criticism around here these days, to be honest. Other than yours, that is.
