Justin Schultz from Crosby (& Guentzel) opens the scoring for Pittsburgh this year. I remain amused.

And the Jets are being the Jets.

Less amusing because it's the Leafs destroying them.

Is Maurice fired yet?

Flames scapegoat for last year Brian Elliott does us a favour and beats the Sharks.

If you're Pittsburgh are you worried about your goaltender situation or do you say, it's just 2 games?

I personally don’t think that there is reason to panic yet, maybe that horrific loss to Chicago will have some effect on the offense and turn things around next game. Give them about fifteen games and then if things still look dismal, it may be time to look for another goaltender. The loss to Chicago was a total team effort.

Don't mess with that. I picked Murray in my hockey draft, so the last thing we need is the Penguins bringing in someone who's going to take a bunch of starts away from him.

Won’t it hurt you more to keep Murray if his GAA stays at the 5.00 mark?

Not if the Penguins score 6 a few times! Points for wins, shutouts and assists, so I just need him to keep starting games.

The heck is going on. McDavid opening night hat trick. Amazing.

But there was also a Simmonds first game hat trick, and now and OV first game hat trick. Stop it other guys :) McDavid is the only one that did it at home though for his fans and McDavid's was a natural hatty, so there is that :)

Should we have a "NHL 2017/18 game night" thread or should this one be it?

If it is, Louie DeBrusk's kid Jake just scored his first NHL goal for the Bruins, pretty special moment for the old guy! Probably getting misty thinking about what could have been if he would have had hands like that!

Wow, screw you Arizona. Choke a 4-1 lead vs the Ducks to lose 5-4. Demers looking like a turd on the tying goal and winner (makes an insanely bad backhand pass to no one when he had full control and lots of time that ends up picked off by the Ducks in his own end).

Saw that, glad we never got him, he looked pretty ordinary out there.
Watching only part of this game reminds me how much I hate the Ducks.

Hey, notice the seats? Home opener and the place was about less than 50% full in the lower bowl, wonder how these clowns can afford the payroll with that type attendance.

That's OK. It's not like anyone will actually be there to see that scoreboard.

Still lots of tickets available in Vancouver for the home opener tomorrow. Saturday night, home opener, McDavid in town and they still can't sell out. Couple of thoughts:

- whenever I hear stuff like this, it makes me cringe that the City of Edmonton fell for Katz's ridiculous, "I'm going to move the team if I don't get a new arena", bluff. There is nowhere outside of Toronto or Montreal that he could have made more money on an NHL team than in Edmonton.

- as much as their tactics sewered the team, KLowe/MacT did a masterful job of selling hope in Edmonton. I know towards the end of the DoD the sellout streak was suspect, but they legit sold that arena out during a lot of really awful seasons.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

The one executive they fired (well, that stayed fired, at least) was Patrick LaForge. I've heard some unflattering stories about him being a jerk to work with, but he did help keep the tickets all sold. The Oilers had some incredible support despite a long, long really bad stretch.

I do wish the team was at least SLIGHTLY thankful for that. The Oilers give so little back to the community, and it's been VERY good to them. It's a shame really. Over the last couple of years, I still love the team, but the organization is pretty detestable.

What? You don't count reserving nice office space for city staff in one of Katz's buildings as giving back to the community? Bet he's even giving a slight discount off the average tenant cost*

*average cost calculated by the Katz Group based on internal estimates

I don't believe that for a second. Not one second. The only way the sell out streak was maintained from 2009-10 on is if someone was buying up all unsold tickets. In my last season as a ticket holder (2013-14 - the first eakins year) I had an empty single seat next to me every single time I went to a game. There is no chance, absolutely no chance, every single seat in that building was sold. And remember, Pocklington added an absurd amount of odd number rows to that building during the ~94 renovation.

Ha, fair enough, but if the Canucks had been as bad as the Oilers through that period there would have been 17 people in the stands by the time Eakins was fired. And that would include the ushers.

The low point for me was... 2014-2015, I think, when my dad offered my wife and I two free lower bowl tickets. We looked at each other, looked at the weather and told him 'nah, we're good.' (It wasn't even snowing, just a little cold)

Now? Hell yes I'd be there, in -40 weather.

Fair point... I'm not sure that makes us good fans or just stupid.

Taylor Hall v Nail Yakupov in the Devils' home opener this afternoon (SNW in Edmonton). It'll be fun when Nuge gets traded and we get former Oilers' first overalls playing against each other once a month.

Nail Yakopov scored 2 weird goals tonight. No goalie anywhere near the net for either of them, and one didn't technically go in. All the same though, good for him.

FLames are about to slay the dragon and finally win a regulation game in Anaheim after a decade or however long it has been.

What a perfect night in the NHL. puke

Grumble grumble grumble. If anything this lends credence to the theory that we somehow jumped into an alternate reality.

lol Coyotes. 4-0 Vegas, and the Coyotes only have 3 shots on goal.

Yak scores his 3rd of the season (same amount of goals he got all last year). This one was legit. 1-timer off a pass on a 2 on 1.

And an assist to give him 5 points on the season. McDavid has to get to work to beat this other #1 pick.

All good though, we can always be OK with the trade because McLellan had no clue how to get anything out of him (Krueger and Nelson did, and McLellan doesn't seem to know how to get anything out of anyone that isn't a top 15 talent, but whatever), and didn't like him. And, that is solid reasoning to get rid of any player.

I saw highlights of the Avs for the first time. I see he is wearing #64 again. Clearly that is the reason, not coaching, situation or opportunity...

More astounding than his 5 points in 4 games is the fact that Yak is a plus 6.

PLUS 6.

Poor flames. They actually have to play starting goalies this year. I guess they should be proud that teams are taking them seriously finally.

Vegas, best start to a first ever season (5-1-0) since the Montreal Canadiens.

Leafs have 4 goals in 5 shots tonight...seriously...wth. Hyman and Brown in on the action too, not exactly gods of shooting.

Hate the NHL.

Chicago got a beat down from the Blues, but finished their game strong. They're all ready for a big rebound tomorrow against some unlucky team!
