Why does this seem really fishy to me? As in...

"Coach, I don't think I can go this year... I think I need to be on LTIR"

Which means he keeps his salary and doesn't have to face the music on Covid? I know that this is highly speculative and I hate to assume the worst in people, but still...

... the only unvaccinated player that should be at camp just isn't feeling up to speed, and they can't figure out why...

If he can go on LTIR that is 100% the best possible outcome for the Oilers because they get the full 1.5mill in cap space.

So they can pretend Archie has restless leg syndrome or whatever it is but they couldn't pull it off with Neal...

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Got to have buy in by the player to make that stuff happen.

Toronto didn’t with Lupul, they just made it clear his only good option was to play along

Better late than never? :)

I still find it hard to believe this org would game the system in any way, even now.

Super glad he was protected in the expansion draft.

Well for those looking for the Oilers to get creative with their problems, this is a pretty solid solution.

At the end of the day I don't think it would have made any difference to protect him or not, we would have lost Larsson no matter what. But in principle I agree, under different circumstances that could have ended up being a really bad decision with some bad repercussions.

"Edmonton Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said forward Josh Archibald has not "been able to get up to speed and isn’t feeling right," during training camp, so doctors are doing tests to determine what the issue is."

This sounds like me in grade 3 trying to convince my mom I can stay home from school sick.

Josh Archibald’s Day Off!

It’s almost perfect. Ferris (Matthew Broderick) is a small guy... and his best friend Cameron wears a Red Wings jersey(Tyler Bertuzzi)!

This spinoff writes itself!

Guaranteed, this plot goes from player to team to PA to league. It's a concerted effort to remove a problem and spare the bad press.

Just in from Spec, Arch is done for the foreseeable future. Had Covid in the summer and now has heart issues. Frees up his $1.5m cap hit.

In fairness to Hall, I've wanted to throw a waterbottle at Eakins all season.

I liked him, but good riddance. I wish him good health and a speedy recovery, but he can find a new team as far as I’m concerned.

I wonder if getting vaccinated was a good idea? Hmmm.....

Oh well, his career might be over but at least he didn't have to go against his principals.

Still think this is fake. League and team get an “athletes can get sick so get vaxxed” angle, while the player gets paid and doesn’t have to get vaxxed and the PA can sit out the dispute.

If he’s truly sick, I hope he can live a healthy life after hockey.

Yeah I think it's fake too. If he got COVID in the summer, then why not share this information when first announcing that Archibald is the unvaccinated Oiler a week ago.

This would be the most embarrassing way for Archie to fake though wouldn't it? Lots of ways to be vague and sit out. Heart inflammation is not something you could get away with faking with a 3rd party check if the league wanted to call your bluff.

The intensity of training to get in game shape may have tipped him over an edge he was near all summer. Athletes that train through COVID have been shown to have a much higher chance of developing a vascular issue. Since near the start docs have been getting athletes to do nothing until they are over COVID. But, people that think it's no big deal I'm sure are much more likely to just keep on powering through it, like many college athletes did last year messing themselves up.

I have a small voice in my head saying "cover up! cover up!"

But I'm more inclined to believe the simple answer that he did get COVID, mostly recovered, but then the higher level intensity at training camp along with Doctors more closely monitoring performance showed the problem. Luckily before he resumed a regular pro level intense season and possibly made things worse.

I know someone work wise that caught COVID a year ago, and they are still dealing with the issues. His Doctor basically explained that it hit his system with the equivalent force of a heart attack. And those take 6 months, a year or more to recover from. And that's just recovering, not pro level athlete.

My son is also dealing with a heart issue (non covid) and the reality is the Doctors just look at you and shrug their shoulders until they actually catch an episode of the problem on an ECG with hard data to backup the symptoms.

If a person goes by his twitter from last year where he seemed to be in the Covid is fake/government controlling/conspiracy camp, he doesn't strike me as the type that he would be overly careful, following all the recommendations to try and not get it.

I don't want to wish bad on a person and if he loses his hockey career over this, that is truly unfortunate but it is sort of Karma.

He made his choices and now needs to live with the consequences. Can't think of a better example of karma than that.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Okay - this is pretty crazy. People, including an Ontario MLA, saying that Archibald is out because he got vaccinated?! Idiots.

Just in from Spec, Arch is done for the foreseeable future. Had Covid in the summer and now has heart issues. Frees up his $1.5m cap hit.

Sigh.........

1.5M is good at least

I liked him, but good riddance. I wish him good health and a speedy recovery, but he can find a new team as far as I’m concerned.

I wonder if getting vaccinated was a good idea? Hmmm.....

Oh well, his career might be over but at least he didn't have to go against his principals.

Still think this is fake. League and team get an “athletes can get sick so get vaxxed” angle, while the player gets paid and doesn’t have to get vaxxed and the PA can sit out the dispute.

If he’s truly sick, I hope he can live a healthy life after hockey.

Stalock got the same thing when he got covid I think before last season and he can't go again this year because of it.

Do people feel bad for Archibald? I am listening to John Shannon and he says "you have to feel sympathy for him". I am finding it hard to feel bad for the guy. He made a choice going against the advice of 1000's of doctors and scientists. I would feel bad for him if he got vaccinated but had this happen but he didn't. He made a choice and unfortunately, it looks to have bit him in the ass.

So I don't feel bad for the guy. In life the decisions you make have consequences and its too bad but this was probably the worst consequence he could have happen but it was his choice.

In fairness we don't know if Archibald cares if Shannon or anyone on the internet feels bad about him. I'm guessing he doesn't. I think we can assume he's probably not playing this year, his career here is likely over, and leave it at that.

I'm just indifferent. He'll be fine, even if maybe his NHL career is over, he made millions. He will likely recover well enough to keep on rolling in his life.

Just glad we got that 1.5M of cap space back and he's not gonna be around the team to be a pain in the butt through the year. His contribution may be replaced by a league min guy as well.

As much as schadenfreude can feel satisfying at times, it's worth remembering that these are people's lives still, and this is a health issue that could end his career and impact his life after hockey. I think he's clearly made some poorly informed choices, and it's disappointing to have someone who is in a role to potentially do some good spout conspiracy theories and give support to the anti-vax movement. That said, I am not cheering against Josh Archibald or going to take any happiness from the consequences of his actions. I do feel a little sorry for him.

Meh. He actively spread plandemic misinformation - which likely lead to more illness. He refused the vaccination, got sick and most certainly spread it around - which likely lead to more illness.

Eat poop, Archibald. It's a real shame he got it now and not next month when he could have his paycheque taken from him.

Personal responsibility, consequences and all that snowflakey stuff.

Not at all. At the end of the day, the anti-science conspiracist philosophy does not pay off in the long run and public stories like this are important to reinforce that fact. He was actively causing harm to others with misinformation and complacent spreading of the virus. That is not OK and he got what he deserves. If his philosophy brought him to this, then of what use was his philosophy? In 10 years there will be a name for this garbage in history textbooks.
