This is always relevant for Oilers fans, so may as well put this in here now:

That Alexis LaFreniere kid might look really good on McDavid's left wing!

Finally. This is the #1OA pick that will put us over the top.

So you're just giving up on the lottery win? We've stumbled recently but winning lotteries is what this franchise does best.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Giving up? No way. We clearly have this one in the bag. We're owed one. It's been forever since we picked #1OA.

Sportsnets latest 2020 draft rankings (Sam Cosentino)

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/sportsnets-2020-nhl-draf t-prospect-rankings-january/

Lafreniere has been the #1 guy in all the draft polls from the beginning. No reason to have anyone else ranked at the top. as far as I can see.

I'm guessing that the Oilers will be picking somewhere around the middle of the first round. Any ideas who they should be looking at?

They should take the best available forward whoever that is. Make sure he can skate. I would shy away from anyone super small as it can take them a lot longer to be effective just based on size and strength.

I see they have a goalie listed really high. If I am any team, I wouldn't take a goalie with a high pick. Goalies usually take a long time before they develop and it seems to be a complete mystery at times which ones work out and which ones don't.

Whoever they pick, they need to hit on and that player has to be looking like a legit player within a normal time period. Normal time period in my opinion for a first round pick being 2-3 yrs tops from when they were drafted. A legit player is someone who is in your every day NHL line up and contributing in some way. Top 6 preferably but if he is a good, every day bottom 6 guy, that's fine.

As much as I have had many an argument about JP and development, needing 4, 5, or more years before you might be a NHLer is not acceptable for a first round pick. At the end of this season, starting next year JP will going into year 5 of his development and he will still be a question mark. If there is a player who might project as being really good but it takes 5 or 6 years past his draft to get there, pass. 5 or 6 years might as well be a lifetime. Save the 5 or 6 yr projects for later round picks.

Pretty entertaining to see the Sharks barely above Ottawa in the standings. Would be great if the Sharks pick ended up being a lottery winner for the Sens. Sens fans need some love.

Lafreniere gets suspended for a head shot.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/juniors/oceanics-alexis-lafr eniere-given-three-game-suspension-head-shot/

"Lafreniere came across the ice just seven seconds into the third period of Sunday’s game and elbowed Quebec’s Thomas Caron in the head.

He received a major penalty and game misconduct on the play."

I'm a little disappointed in Lafreniere's actions, but he has been on the receiving end of some nasty shots too. Still, discipline such as this I would consider lenient.

Sportsnet's February rankings.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/sportsnets-2020-nhl-draf t-prospect-rankings-february/

Hard to project who will be still available when the Oilers select, but I think I would prefer a Centre who is comfortable on the wing. The Oilers will probably pick around 15-20, but I still think they should keep the draft pick rather than trade it away, unless they get an offer that Holland can't refuse. And for crying out loud let whoever it is overripen.

2020 NHL Draft postponed. No definite replacement.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/nhl-postpones-draft-awar ds-show-combine-due-covid-19/

Not surprised, but have to feel bad for Lafreniere and the rest of the Class of 2020. Hope they can get this done in the summer.

Every team should get a shot at #1 now? Come on lottery balls! Wherever you are.

This might be a really good year to be picking high.

The information gaps out there as a result of not finishing the season(s), is likely significant. But, maybe less emotional, “he did well in the playoffs”, type decision making will be going on.

Still, the chance of fluking into a great, last first rounder, is probably better than usual.

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

Picking high rasta isn't anything new for the Oilers, which probably explains some of their picks over the last 20 years..

Article about the draft and how teams will rank:

https://www.tsn.ca/nhl-draft-lottery-history-1.236014

Draft odds are given to 15 teams, but only 7 are currently known.

Super loser teams (can't even get into 24 team playoffs? lolz) are in the normal 1-7 spots and there are placeholder slots for places 8-15.

If any lottery pick (1, 2 and/or 3) goes to an unknown 8-15 rank spot, it is set aside for a future phase of the lottery.

If no picks end up belonging to the 8-15 team group, then the draft lottery is over. If any did belong to the 8-15 group, another lottery is held after the play-in round.

As a play-in round loser, you get even odds with the other losers (8 teams total) for a shot to win one of those lottery picks that landed on an 8-15 placeholder. Run as many rounds as needed for how many picks end up in the 8-15 group.
