https://www.nhl.com/oilers/news/release-oilers-announce-deta ils-for-2018-rookie-camp/c-299941994

...."Edmonton's rookie roster features 27 players (three goaltenders, nine defencemen and 15 forwards).

This roster includes 14 NHL draft picks, including 2018 first round pick Evan Bouchard (10th overall), 2018 second round picks Ryan McLeod (40th) and Olivier Rodrigue (62nd), as well as 2017 first round pick Kailer Yamamoto (22nd overall), 2016 second round pick Tyler Benson (32nd overall) and 2017 third round selections Stuart Skinner (78th overall) and Dmitri Samorukov (84th overall). "....

.....we've seen enough of guys like Yamamoto and Bear to have formed opinions about their futures....will be interesting to see how guys like Evan Bouchard andTyler Benson and the others are shaping up....will also be interesting to see if there are any hints that the Oilers are finally taking player development seriously....

Probably not.

Definitely some randomness in there:

Ryan Van Stralen - AHL Contract
RW 6'3" 220 L 11/10/93 Prescott, ON
Carleton (USports) 25 11 8 19 46
Carleton (USports PO) 3 0 0 0 2 0
Wichita (ECHL) 16 8 7 15 18 9
Wichita (ECHL PO) 6 3 0 3 2 -2

Luke Esposito - Tryout
C 5’10” 183 L 10/18/93 Greenwich, CT
Grand Rapids (AHL) 31 1 7 8 10 1
Grand Rapids(AHL PO) 5 0 1 1 2 1
Toledo (ECHL) 14 2 3 5 4 -3

Jared Wilson - AHL Contract
D 6'3" 190 L 08/27/94 Calgary, AB
RPI (ECAC) 37 7 7 14 45 -12
Toledo (ECHL) 10 0 4 4 13 6

Why we are giving contracts to a 24 year old out coming out of the the ECAC and a 25 year old out of USports is beyond me... and that Esposito tryout reeks of that idiotic ''has good genes'' thinking. I am interested in seeing how Benson and Lagesson perform, especially given what we passed on in favour of Benson.

Edit: Correction, Luke has no relation to you know who... hope the OBC knows this.

Ya, definitely saw the name and assumed management brought him in due to Tony/Phil. Surprised to find Messier. Suspect something similar played out in Oiler HQ.

Get call from Messier thanking them. Eyes dart around.

hahaha the way this thread played out was just so great.

to paraphrase:

- Who are these nobodies they are bringing in to rookie camp??
- Esposito?...its the Oilers so I bet they were dumb enough to bring him in because of his name! lol j/k
- lol the oilers are dumb but no way are they that dumb! That would just be to ridiculous. Nepotism has its limits right...He isn't even related to Phil or Tony!
- OMG its Messiers nephew. Of course.

7-3 late in the third for the bad guys. Oilers goaltending hasn't been spectacular...Skinner allowed 4 on 13 shots in the first two periods, Wells took over and has let in three in just over 15 minutes.

Saw a few goals on Skinner.. not exactly unstoppable type .. oh well .. he has time in the AHL.

Didn't see the play by play, but you can't really judge by the score, the Flames rookies could be a further in development (older).

... hope they can beat the Oooks...

DeBrincat is an obvious one. For a management team that believes in the coincidence of bathroom encounters as predictive of the future it's still stunning to me that the org wouldn't think they would be brilliant for drafting a RH sniper that had chemistry with McDavid in junior.

Maybe it was just too obvious though. I mean, MacT running into someone while he is having explosive diarrhea is a once in a lifetime kind of occurrence i would assume.

He was small though, and they'd just got through a season where all they talked about was the importance of grit and toughness and being hard to play against. They didn't draft a single player under six feet tall that draft, and had four picks 6'3 or taller.

Benson isn't a tower at 6', but DeBrincat is only 5'7...I do think though the season that DeBrincat put up AFTER McDavid left makes it bizarre that he was passed over until the 39th pick.

To be fair to the Oilers though, maybe they still felt burned by the last time they drafted the linemate of a generational player?

EDIT TO ADD:

In all seriousness, there haven't been a lot of breakthrough players from that draft in the first couple of years since. Here's the entire list of players drafted second round or later that have played in the NHL:

#39 Alex Debrincat - 82 GP, 52 pts
#43 Janne Kuokkanen - 4 GP, 0 pts
#47 Samuel Girard - 73 GP, 23 pts
#60 Dylan Gambrell - 3 GP, 0 pts
#100 Victor Mete - 49 GP, 7 pts
#162 Jesper Bratt - 74 GP, 35 pts
#173 Blake Hillman - 4 GP, 1 pt
#175 Maxim Mamin - 26 GP, 4 pts

Only two guys after #16 in the first round (Henrik Borgstrom 4GP & Tage Thompson 41 GP) have had any time in the spotlight too.

It's early, so many more of these guys may make the NHL yet, but Benson's in the same camp as most from his draft year so far.
