Mike Smith man. I get that playing the puck is part of the Mike Smith game. But you are 40 years old. You have to know what the state of the game is, hell the series…can’t take risks all of the time.

Up 4-2 with 10 minutes left in the 3rd, I think everybody just wants the goalie of all people to play conservatively. He gave up a timely goal in every series.

Was mad at the ref at the time, but seeing the play again, f-sake he throws it directly at the ref.

Smith's game was very visibly degrading. His erratic play was getting worse. He was getting up slower and slower after whistles as the series went on.

He's probably such an alpha in the room the coaches have been worried what it would do to morale to sideline him. We need to bite that bullet, whatever it takes. The goaltending needs a full reset.

If management didn't learn important lessons from this series, then pack it up. Fold the team. Hold a lottery for where our players go.

Also we all got to see what peak IDGAF billionaire hair looks like with the Katz cam.

So, not a total waste.

We got best with youthful tenacity. Need some more veteran calmness to combat that. Think jumbo Joe will come here?

On the bright side….only one more year and we can bury most his contract in the minors.

We won’t. Can’t afford to replace him, but we could.

All pessimistic BS aside.

We made it to the WCF. Leon could barely shoot the puck and he was all world. McDavid did extraordinary things. McLeod took a huge step. Nuge and Hyman played integral roles and had unbelievable playoffs. Woodcroft appears to be our coach that we need.

Let’s take a fiver and enjoy the moment. We can find Oscargasm’s pants tomorrow and live in the now for a few more minutes.

Lots of attention on Makar, rightfully so.

But Avs did a lot of great work picking up analytics darlings over the years. Nichuskin, Toews, and Lehkonen paid big dividends.

Yet our media Reichsmarschall’s are already on the offensive to send out our one consistent analytical darling bc ‘ReAl GoAlS mAtTeR mOrE’ on a team with the last 3, and 5 of the last 6, Art Ross winners.

I've said before that I think Toews is the most underrated defenceman in the league. Hurts me every time that I remember that the Avalanche got him for 2 2nds and then re-signed him for $4.1M for 4 years.

Same price as 13 games of Andreas Athanasiou? LOL@AVS - suckers. Toews is nowhere near as fast as AA, and much less Red Wing roots. They were taken to the woodshed on that one.

I watched the game this morning and my recording cut off shortly after the winning goal. They were reviewing a high stick. From the views I saw, it seemed like it was above the crossbar. Was it? Did we get screwed again, or did they finally end up showing another angle where it was below the bar? Or was it inconclusive, therefore still a goal?

They drew a line on screen during the round up on Sportsnet, which showed they probably got it right. A fraction or so higher and it would be back to all square and any lower and an easy call for goal. Sense in the building was one of it's all over, no complaining.

The shot was deflected into Smith so shoulder height was the determining factor. The crossbar is the determining factor only on a deflection going directly into the net. The contact was pretty much right at crossbar height but Smith made the save - so right call. I would argue that the real determining factor was Duncan Keith standing in the corner while the guy he was supposed to be covering was skating alone in front of the net...

Are we sure that Score one is accurate? Has anyone other than Staples confirmed it? I could definitely see him get taken in by a fake screenshot. Just scrolling through their feed which generally is pretty professional and includes a clip of McDavid's goal from the game with the caption: BEST IN THE WORLD.

This would seem to be out of character for the account. Plus it just looks hackish compared to the rest of their graphics. The Score logo is even cut off in the corner by the rounding, which isn't the case in every other photo they have on their feed that includes the logo. It's always away from the rounded corner so it's not cut off.

The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced it's a fake. God forbid David Staples do some actual journalism and actually reach out to the social media team at the Score to confirm whether the tweet was real or not.

I saw both the Sportsnet tweet and the Score tweet last night. Both looked to be real. I have seen they both have taken the tweet down this morning.

Pretty distasteful for 2 Canadian broadcaster, especially the rights holder for all of Canada to put that up.

Pretty distasteful for 2 Canadian broadcaster, especially the rights holder for all of Canada to put that up.

I saw totally legitimate looking tweet last night from Friedman that suggested Kane was celebrating with the Avs after the game.

Pretty sure those were the tweets. People got PO'd pretty quickly. The Sportsnet one was taken down quickly. The Score one where they change "OILERS" to "LOSERS" on the logo took longer to remove. Aren't both companies under the same umbrella? Pretty sure Rogers owns both. They probably had a dozen to pick from that they have been brainstorming since the Leafs lost in the 1st round again, and those 2 ended up on the 2 accounts hehe.

Rogers bought the Score television network, but iirc the app has been a standalone property.

Not to question what others here saw, but I still can't get over the logo not fitting in the photo layout. I assume that even if they threw that together pretty quickly they would be working off of some kind of template that would account for how twitter crops the corners of photos.

If it is true though that the Score posted it, that's pretty disappointing. Less so because it 'denigrates' the Oilers or whatever Staples was lamenting (it's a hockey franchise and a sports ticker app, there are bigger injustices in the world to worry about), but more just that it's not even clever. Do better.

Might be there because of how the app works on some phones?

Here is a screenshot someone else took in the middle of the animation that doesn't have the curved corners. I did see this tweet while it was still up just to note. It was definitely better quality than the Sportsnet one hehe.

Makes for an awkward partnership with SportsNet.

As for The Score? I didn't realize they were still around. This is most trending thing they have ever done.

It doesn't bug me. Sour grapes from out east warms my bitter western soul. You're right though, it's not clever it's a lazy grade school insult. "Check it bros, I made the Oilers logo say losers". Good on ya, brah.

The better one I saw was comparing the Oilers to Jamie Lanister. The Oilers were King slayers and then doused the Flames, but were ultimately crush by an avalanche of rocks. Animate THAT.

Finally revealed Nurse was playing with a torn Hip Flexor. I know from experience that is a painful one when not playing playoff hockey. Say what you will about his play but that guys has balls the size of grapefruits. A couple defensive tweaks, replace the black hole of momentum in net and we should be back. Good effort boys. Proud of ya.

I don't know, but the way Smith skated towards the bench at the end of the game and then stood, I got the impression that he either knows that's the last chance as a starter or that that was the end of his career.

On for the Nuge goal off the rare Avs giveaway on the blue line.

Hope he learned a lot from being with the team through the run. Fingers crossed for an injury free year of development next season.

Thrilled for the Oilers, going deeper than I thought possible.

Draisaitl gave everything, he was in so much pain.

Connor laid it all on the line. Couldn't have asked for more.

Nurse shouldn't have played with a torn hip flexor, because he wasn't very effective, that headbutt was stupid in the LA series. He tried to play through it, and hats off to him for it.

I thought JP was ineffective in large parts of the series. Scored a key goal though and I'm not saying get rid of him but he needs more edge to his game..

Kassian was more of a liability than a help but that tying goal was sublime. We need his moxie but not his 10 cent brain..

Kulak was really surprising and Russell was highly effective when used sparingly.

Woodcroft is the right choice.

Real proud of the team, did way better than I thought they were capable.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

Agreed. Puljujarvi needs to learn how to hit and probably needs a scrap or two to make him less timid. Set him up learning how to hockey fight and body check. Russell was blocking shots which kept them from getting through to Smith, Bouchard was dodging shots which allowed them to get through Smith- coachable. Kulak started slow and unsure in the playoffs but started turning on some 2021 Larsson as the series' went on - keeper.

Felt like the '82 Oilers out there - a lot of greatness but some building blocks not in place yet. Too many brainfarts and goofy mistakes. Sometimes felt like we had Ron Low in net. Better than expected in February, very proud of the guys who showed up!

One nice thing about this run...no more excuses now. Fans will expect a run to the cup from management every year.

Just need to get Smith going!

Out the door I mean. And replaced with an actual #1 goalie.

That and Keith retiring would be a huge step in the right direction, but I am not convinced that Hollands sees those two as barriers to success.
