Here's a guy I heard Stauffer mention one day.. Noah Philp.
He plays for the U of A Bears.. scoring about a goal a game..
Played for Seattle WHL.
He's 6'-3" , 195 lbs.
Can toss 'em as well..
If he has some speed.. why not a look?

Here's a scrap in WHL..

The Oilers need to be looking under every rock to find guys. I wouldn't be handing out NHL contracts but 2 way deals, why not. Maybe you hit on 1 or 2.

He's deciding himself where he'll go. No management acquires him without being guaranteed he'll sign. Most of these guys (Hyman, Fox, Vesey) have one destination in mind and won't sign anywhere else.

Not sure why Schultz signed here, maybe because the Oilers had a boatload of guys his age.

He says he's doing this because the Wild don't have a C spot available for him, but my BS meter is really going off when he says it.

Well he's from Canada so at least he's not a USA kid wanting to play in his home State.
Hopefully there's a chance. We could use him as a winger primarily, center when required.. kind of like Holloway who is a natural center as well.

I figure the US kids will want to stay in the USA, play for their favourite team, or just be closer to home. Livingstone is highest ranked and a Western Canadian kid, better chance he comes up.

I think this is a flawed assumption that I fear the Oilers make too - they don't always spend time chasing people because they make guesses about where the player really wants to be.

We have Connor McDavid - probably the favourite player of some of these kids. That's a major x-factor. Not to mention, as much fun as it is to dress for the team you grew up cheering for, if I'm making a pitch to a 22-year old, I'm focusing on his path to the NHL, showing where he fits in the depth chart and how we think he can be further ahead by choosing my team.

You know the money is about the same no matter where you go, so you need to look at career path.

The Oilers actually have a pretty good history of bringing kids from the NCAA in to the NHL - Benning and Caggiula probably the most recent - and so I'm selling that hard if there's a kid we really believe in.

And if you have to get Leon and Connor to give him a call to push him over the edge? Then so be it.

I sincerely doubt they fail to talk to a player based on a guess, I'm sure they talk to every one of the top guys available and make their best pitches.. but the number of USA born NCAA free agents that sign to a Canadian team is a pretty short list.. the likelihood is low.. how many have signed in Edmonton? Calgary? Montreal? Ottawa? Schultz, Caggiulla, M. Benning all NCAA FA's, all Canadian.

Mark Arcobello was American. We've also had plenty of US college guys who we drafted who signed here rather than playing out an extra year in order to go to free agency (Greene, Grier, Vandevelde...)

My pick is Livingstone, helps that he's from Western Canada.

1. Jake Livingstone - Minnesota State University (Mankato) .. from Creston BC
2. Nick Blankenburg - University of Michigan ..from WI, USA
3. Zach Metsa - Quinnipiac University ..from WI, USA
4. Ethan Frisch - University of North Dakota ..from MN, USA
5. Colin Felix - University of Massachusetts ..from NJ, USA

Honourable Mentions
6. Sam Malinski, Cornell ..from MN, USA
7. Aidan Fulp, Western Michigan ..from IN, USA
8. Michael Joyaux, Western Michigan ..from IL, USA

Blankenburg, being a Wisconsin boy, could help also. I love cheese.

I figure the US kids will want to stay in the USA, play for their favourite team, or just be closer to home. Livingstone is highest ranked and a Western Canadian kid, better chance he comes up.

I think this is a flawed assumption ... they make guesses about where the player really wants to be.

Arcobello didn't have many options, Oklahoma was obviously low on his list as he didn't sign until September 27, 2010 after finishing NCAA, no seats left and the music had stopped.

The rest you mentioned were all Oiler draft picks which wasn't the topic under discussion.

Arcobello was a pretty high scorer in college. I think he did have several options if I recall correctly. There was another guy around the same time too, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was. Another scoring forward I think, but he never made the jump.

The draft picks have the option of waiting it out and going free agent too. They don't have to sign with the team that picked them.

He was a relatively high scorer in NCAA.. but obviously nobody wanted him very much.. waited all summer, no takers.. he finally signed with OK at the end of September (Sept.27) start of training camp and just before their exhibition season started.. sounds like last call before the bar closed.

I have a hard time getting too excited about any undrafted FA out of college. I feel like most of them end up like Spencer Foo. Talked about a lot, but only played a few games and has been in the KHL for 3 years.

Hey he made it to the Olympics (China)!

I agree, but its a free roll of the dice vs a draft pick.. I'd say some of these guys can be like a free 3rd or 4th.. maybe even a 1st if a guy was actually a high draft pick and chooses to be a FA (like Fox).

But I think a top rated NCAA goalie is a better chance over, a skater, and/or a drafted 18 year old goalie.. unless he's considered a top rated 1st rounder like a Cossa or Wallstedt

I think signed a college FA who was drafted is totally different. Someone like Fox, Schultz, and Wheeler were projected to be good players, and would have been NHLers without as many years in college.

I could agree on the logic that NCAA goalies might be a good bet since they are older, but I can't think of any good examples of starting goalies (or even well known back ups) that were undrafted college free agents. Not to say it can't happen and not that the team should not try, but do you know of any goalies that have worked out that way? Legitimately curious.

Thanks for the list. I knew about a lot of goalies drafted in later rounds, and I remembered Belfour and CuJo, but that was really a different time. Talbot and Jones stick out to me the most, as I didn't realize that neither of them were drafted. If Fanti peaks at the level of either of them I would call that a massive win.

Edit: Looking at the list of undrafted goalies I see Ty Conklin on there. Now I remember that I used to know he was undrafted, but I think I just tried not to remember him at all for some reason.

I think that teams should look at all the routes to acquire players - Europe, College, draft, etc. You shouldn't assume that any of them will provide can't miss players every time, but it's still worth doing. All can provide real NHL prospects.

I think sometimes the teams don't do themselves any favour hyping up some of these kids before they've been in the organization. That's true of all the different routes. It doesn't set up players for great success when you put a massive amount of expectations on the fan base. The Oilers have been bad at doing this for years now. It means that when someone isn't a high impact first liner, a lot of times the fans see them as a complete failure, even if they're a solid contributing NHL player. The team responds to this and we often see them given away for next to nothing as a result. Remember Chiarelli talking about the 1994s? They build up expectations for themselves as well as the fans and then make unforced errors.

I do think that the team has also struggled with understanding the best way to market themselves. They flirt with good ideas every so often. The video package for Dany Heatley, while it got some mocking, was a good step. I don't think the team has done much more than that though. They don't seem to have any idea how to position themselves, or that there's other considerations that are important for players other than just money. I think the team pulled out all the stops for Justin Schultz, but I don't think they realize that they should be doing that ALL THE TIME for guys they want to sign and feel they're competitive on.

Another area I think the team will get better on when they no longer have an old man who yearns for how things used to be.

You'd think/hope that is there is a player there, the Oilers should know best because he's in their backyard plus there is a former Oilers assistant coach as the head guy in the U of A. I would hope Herbers would know who could play and who can't.

This is another guy they should be getting in on.. Noah Philp.. scorer.. speed.
Missed previous year due to no UofA season.
He's getting looks from a few teams.. 5 NHL teams reportedly (Stauffer)
Older brother is Luke Philp, who's with Calgary (Stockton).. Noah is bigger.. 6'-3" to Luke's 5'-10"

He's not a secret anymore.. Stauffer was saying 4 to 5 other teams have been sniffing around.. you'd think they'd have have got in sooner due their prime proximity.. snooze you lose?

Watching U of A Bears in Gold medal game vs UQTR.. Noah Philp looks good. Has 2G so far.. snipe shot.. good hands.. fast skater.. size.. Sign him Holland!

Bears D is so solid.. smart.
Their play is so much more intelligent than what I see with the Oilers D.
Hockey IQ should be a prime criteria when drafting any defenseman

F me. Bears got Oiler-itis.. totally outclassed, out played UQTR.. Bears with comfortable leads of 2-0, 3-1, 4-2.. everything is going their way.. then wind up getting tied up 4-4 late in the 3rd.. lose in double OT.. you could see what was happening.. 2 goal lead.. outplaying the other team, getting grade A chance after grade A chance .. but not burying them.. let UQTR hang around and keep coming back.. have a few brief moments of dope-iness.. and its in their net.

Winning championship games is all about continuous focus.

Championship lost.

Should be interesting.. the Oilers Philp is 6'-3", 198# age 23.. .. the Flames Philp is 5'-10" 180# age 26
They'll both be seeing each other in the AHL, Luke is at Stockton, Noah will be at Bako.
Both lit it up in their last year at UofA.

I didn’t realize Luke is 3 years older. I remember being cheesed that the Flames signed him but had to say I’m beyond thrilled Noah has joined the Must!

Here's hoping the Oilers get Jake Livingstone to sign in the coming days 🤞🏻
He'd have a good opportunity, Oilers future RHD list is fluid.

I watched Livingstone in the NCAA final vs. Denver.. I was curious about his skating.. skating looked good.. seemed better than average compared to the others in the game.. he rushes the puck.. made a few offensive excursions.. he's not just a stay at home D-man.. and 6'-3".. he looks like a decent prospect.. from Creston..

Next guy up to sign..

Jake Livingstone playing in the Frozen 4 vs Minnesota tomorrow (Savoie plays Michigan), hopefully Oilers get serious talking to him soon after that's complete.. big RHD .. offensive talent.. only 22.. our RHD prospect cupboard needs stocking up.

Note: Voted CCHA Defence man of the year by CCHA coaches.

Minnesota State defenseman Jake Livingstone had a really good freshman year.

Playing time figured to be plentiful for him going into the season, which it was, and Livingstone certainly lived up to the hype that came with his offensive stat lines in junior hockey.

“(He) comes in, has a really good freshman year,” MSU coach Mike Hastings said. “Goes home and decides he wants to remake himself as far as his physical attributes.”

Livingstone has arguably been MSU’s most versatile player this season, and Hastings isn’t the only one who’s been impressed. The CCHA’s coaches voted him the league’s Defenseman of the Year this week.

Livingstone currently ranks 11th in Division I among defenseman with 29 points (9-20—29), which leads the CCHA.

“It definitely helps when you have guys like Julian (Napravnik), (Nathan) Smith, (Cade) Borchardt and (Brendan) Furry — all those forwards putting goals in when you feed them the puck from your own end.” Livingstone said with a laugh.

The offensive production has been impressive, but that’s Livingstone’s calling card.

He posted 49 points in 52 games with Langley in the British Columbia Hockey League the season before he arrived at MSU. He also had 14 points in 28 games as a freshman.

Livingstone has done it at both ends this season, playing consistently on both the power play and penalty kill.

He ranks fourth on the team with five power-play goals, and is also fourth with 35 blocked shots.

“I think the offensive side of the game comes more natural to me,” Livingstone said. “The defensive game — I’ve got to think a little more, and I think it took a little bit of time.”

Added Hastings: “His versatility is what makes him a quality hockey player. … If you go back and you put a mile marker on him, how many miles he’s gone this year for us, it’s quite a bit.”

Livingstone said he doesn’t think about professional hockey a ton, but whenever he decides to make the jump, there figures to be plenty of suitors, especially given his current trajectory.

Hastings said he sees a bright future for Livingstone, and has been impressed with his attention to detail since last season ended in terms of his strength training and diet.

At 6-foot-3, he has the unique size to go along with impressive offensive skills that teams covet.

* “When you’re somebody that is paying somebody to go play a game and be productive, you want a guy that’s a self-starter,” Hastings said. “Jake Livingstone’s a self-starter.

“I think he’s got a bright future in front of him whenever he decides to take that next step.”

I am pretty sure at this point Holland is reading your posts so I expect to see the announcement in the next couple of days.

Also, are you secretly Ken Holland hyping us on your upcoming signings? After all, you do have Yzerman in your avatar.
