Idiots. They fire the coach three weeks later just as we go into the ridiculously busy part of the schedule. As predicted.

Better late than never?

They were hoping for a Smith miracle? These two losses seem to have really changed things. Constantly shocking how much this org runs on hope instead of reality. I know I would expect more for the millions Holland, Bobby and others are draining from Katz.

I guess it’s better late than never. You get a bonus Oilfans gold star for being loudest of the people who accurately predicted this weeks ago. Congratulations. But we shouldn’t kid ourselves. This is a simple continuation of the piss poor management we’ve seen for the last 23 years. Nothing of significance has changed. The Oilers are still deeply flawed non-contenders.

Probably the worst case scenario is the Oilers squeaking into the playoffs and people starting to believe the problems have been solved.

Covid break was the opportunity for Woodcroft to plan systemic change and maybe get the bigger things implemented, maybe a couple practices, Holland explored the limits of hanging on to a coach. It'll take some pretty good play for half a season to squeak in. We'll see. Clearly some good can be accomplished in deployment alone.

Is Manson coming to run the D? Also I'm not looking for goonery, but every player and 3 or 4 specific players should probably receive a message that they are soft to play against and that there are subtle ways even today to change a game's complexion even when pucks aren't going in.

I might not turn off the next game even if the Oilers find themselves down 3 early. I want to see what the response from the bench and behind the bench entails.

Playfair fired as well with Woodcroft taking over. It's funny out things play out since Woodcroft was McLellan's assistant who everyone hated for being so bad at special teams (if I remember right). He has done great in the AHL as a head coach though, so maybe he helps turn things around. Interim head coaches have had some luck recently in seasons they were hired (St. Louis in 2019, Montreal last season).

Think we found that the PP thing was McLellan lameness. Lucic glued to the first unit in an endless attempt to get the Looch going.

Guess we will see pretty quickly what Woodcroft does. How soon does he load the top line? Pulju keep getting 12 minutes even though the ice is tilted in our favour constantly when he is out there? Barrie back on the first PP? McDrai 20+ minute games all the time? Scared to play Skinner? Do we keep up some of the worst neutral zone play in the league allowing constant entries against with control? Lots of suck to compare him to.

Holland waited a few games too long, the covid shutdown was ideal time, and this being a big season for the organization.

Holland thinks he has the horses, he does certainly have some horses and a better team than the way this one plays.

I hope to God this group responds to Woodcroft.

The good thing about this is that Holland has now used the coaching change bullet that he’s been holding on to. No longer his get out of jail free card at the end of the year.

He’s also demonstrated his ability to waffle and miss timing, which should put him closer to his own exit.

I’m pretty sure Holland delayed this to protect his own job. He and Bobby should have joined Tippett on the unemployment line today.

Are there any ex-Oilers, currently coaching a PeeWee team (as St.Louis was), that the team could bring in?

Is Paul Coffey’s son draft eligible yet? Would be a nice setup to bring another legend back.

Can Jay Woodcroft, Connor McDavid, and Leon Draisaitl win despite our management?

I hope he’s got a plan…I hope Marody gets a recall immediately. I hope Shore and Turris don’t see the ice again.

I had lots of time for Tip and was thrilled he was the next coach of the Oilers. His 3ish years coaching here he showed he could get us in the playoffs After that? All bets were off.

2 play offs (well 1 play in) and both sweeps. Tippet proved he could not coach in the post season, he wasn't inventive enough to change the play and the teams ate us up for dinner.

This season he showed he loved his vets and made absolutely mind boggling line decisions. Played players who were in a funk in the same position because they had tenure, he didn't redeploy areas of weakness. He just failed to grow.

The power play became stagnant this season with set plays and while it was new it was lethal, teams knew the plays and devised ways around it. There was no denying that the oilers coaching staff are out of ideas but yet Gulutzan remains.

Our defence has been on a steady decline and Playfair has been pivotal in that decline.

Woodcroft comes in as the interim to save the season as Mason is in tow. I really hope our Condors guy (who was building something really strong in the A) can revive this team who is in a nosedive.

Goaltending is a tire fire and that is on Holland. He is the next to go.

Something had to happen. They look like they did during that bad streak. Disinterested and playing like dumbasses.

I hope Woody can hold these guys more accountable because while Tippett clearly needed to go, a lot of their issues stem from their players flat out not playing like they should. Starts at McD but it's the whole line up.

I'm not so sure HE got the Oilers to the playoffs. I'd say that had as much or more to do with the maturation of the core the Oilers are built around.

The synchronous collapse of all the Cali teams helped too.

The synchronous collapse of all the Cali teams helped too.

Last season, the Oil never had to play those or any of the good U.S. teams, and they got to play a horrid Sens team a ridiculous number of times. Last year should have been seen as an anomaly marked with an asterisk, but ol’Ken and his cohorts evidently thought that this team needed just a bit of tweaking despite getting embarrassingly swept by a Jets team who themselves were never contenders. The managerial incompetence of this team has been maddening to watch over the past decade and a half…

The coach is gone, so that excuse has been used. The roster has issues still which is 100% on the GM and it will be next to impossible to address all of them mid season sadly. BUT

- not showing up on time.
- coughing up pucks.
- doing blind hope passes to no one.
- trying to pass through guys when it's not there.
- passing up wide open looks in an attempt to try to score low percentage but pretty goals. That
includes 5 on 5 and the PP.
- dogging it on backchecks.
- not picking up the open guy that is standing beside you.
- trying to go 1 on 2, 3 or 4 when you are by yourself instead of dumping it in on a change.
- not finishing your checks. That doesn't mean blowing up a guy trying to drive them through the
boards, that means not turning away from a check you should do every single time regardless of
who you are.
- losing puck battles.
- making risky, dumb plays or reads instead of just doing the safe play.
- being hard on pucks.
- making tape to tape passes.
- staying out for stupidly long shifts.
- going hard to the net and to the hard areas you need to score goals.

Those are all things that every single player on the Oilers do over and over again, that are completely correctable and preventable by the players. Those are all things that changing out a goalie or a player or 2 or getting a team to retain some money don't fix. The GM made mistakes on this roster that need to be fixed but if every guy on this team flaws and all did all the things I listed, they won't be where they are today.

don't forget, every single D-man needs to shoot 3 times a game.

If the dman has a wide open look, then by all means fire away vs trying to do their idiotic backdoor tap in attempts. But part of the problem is the Oilers lack forwards willing to go to the net to provide screens, tips and bang in rebounds. 4 out of the 6 guys that played in the top 6 last night don't like to get near the net.
- McD, Leon, Nuge, Yamo. Going to the net and the hard area to score goals and win puck battles sucks because it's not fun but you can't coach that into a player, they have to want to do it. Those guys don't and they all play a hell of a lot of minutes and 3 out of 4 of them are the big 3, main guys on the PP.

As much as I am not the biggest fan of Crosby and I bet in a skills competition, McD beats him every time, I respect how Crosby plays because he gets into the dirty areas, he's in the corners, he's going to the net, he's mucking it up. He's not going 1 on 3 or 4 when he's the only on the ice. It's in the corner and change.

The standard of how the team plays is set by the captain and the best players on the team. Crosby works hard so his team follows suit. Crosby isn't taking 2 min shifts. He's not trying to go through 3 guys because 2 times out of 100 it works rather than dumping it in on a change or getting a shot off. The standard on this team is cheat for offense, stay out as long as you want and defense is optional. A coach can help fix that but the players have to do it.

This is wrong and why fans should never yell shooooooooooot on the power play. NHL goalies are, by and large, really freaking good at stopping wide open shots from outside of the ringette line. Make the pass, get the goalies moving side to side, wait for traffic, try a backdoor play. get it down low and start a cycle. There are a lot of options. Simply blasting away at an NHL goalie is a not a good one.

Holland making it clear in this press conference that there was zero plan. He decided on a whim after last night’s game. He spoke to no potential options, just was always going to promote from within. He had weeks to think about this and made no plans - just randomly decided one loss was THE loss, and then made the decision.

He doesn’t even know who’s coaching Bakersfield.

He’s probably just really annoyed he had to start working this far ahead of the trade deadline.

Oh god, he’s talking about drafting now as a key to the team’s success.

We can’t wait for draft picks to save this. Talking about how this doesn’t happen in 12 months, and earlier about how it takes 6-7 years? That is not good. He does understand he has the game’s best player, right?

I get his thinking. Ideally you want to fire your first coach ~2/3 into your contact so it gives you a good chance to sign an extension. Once a GM finds a way to get into that 2nd deal they really don't have to give a crap anymore.

Sometimes things don't go according to plan and you have to quickly adjust. In Holland we trust.

Not knowing the name of the Condors new coach is unbelievable. We need to put a DAO together and help a fan poll take over this club to see some real change. What's worth saving at this point other than the rink, the Garth banner, McDavid/Draisatl?
