Hilariously, They set up the poison pill against buyouts in the back half of the contract. So much for just run him out for 4-5 years and buy out the rest.

Crap. This is why the NHL needs pre-planned buyout contracts :)

it's the price you have to pay for these top tier free agents. And honestly, can anyone name a single signing of a big, late 20's forward with middle-of-the-road offence, who benefitted from playing with elite linemates, that didn't work out great for the team signing him to a seven year deal?

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Just saw Coleman signed with Calgary for 6 years $29.4M average of $4.9M

Who would you rather have? Coleman for $4.9M or Hyman at $5.5M

Both seem pretty crazy to me. Oilers will look at the couple inches of height that Hyman brings as valuable, although Coleman has the Cup rings they covet...

I mean, I think my opinion has been pretty clear on Hyman.

This is likely Milan Lucic, Part 2. Just this week we celebrated buying out James Neal, committing dead cap space for the next four years, which was the only way out of that one.

Maybe this helps them for 2-3 years, and maybe that's all we should care about given the McDavid / Draisaitl window of patience, but I'm always skeptical of the late-20s bump, particularly for those who are benefitting from where they are playing in the lineup, and this has all the red flags that make me take pause.

I think he'll contribute. I don't think he'll ever live up to this deal, on Day 1 or Day 2555. And that's a lot of money to tie up in someone not earning it.

Well, on a relative basis.. I think I'd rather have Hyman for an extra $600K cap + 1 more year, than Coleman in Calgary.

Great add to the Oilers top 6 and an incredible add to the community of Edmonton. This guy and his wife are going to do wonders here.

Don’t be surprised if the wheels don’t fall off as soon as most of you are thinking. Sure. Hes had a few instances of getting injured, but the kid (I can call him a kid, I am a few years older than him) hasn’t had much tread burned off his tires yet.

If fans from the centre of the universe love the guy and have been saying since new broke of him coming for a visit last week that we’re getting a great one.. I believe it.

Not yet! But definitely will be

Add: I’ve scoped them out on Amazon, but I’d rather buy them from a brick and mortar. Im in bookstores 2-3 times a month so will have my eyes open next time.

Appreciate you trying to shoot from the hip and cover all these free agent day treads with happy Oscargasms (just plural for posts by Oscargasm).

The best part of getting Hyman may be that Tippett will actually stick with McDavid and Drai on different lines now.

Could have done that before of course, and we're a better team when he did, but now it should just be automatic. McDavid has a couple guys he might like to play with now with Hyman and Foegele. Hope it does end up with Pulju getting booted down a line or 2 though.

But the versatility Hyman provides allows for Leon-McD on one line while Hyman-Nuge are on another!!!

But yeah. Any other team and I would say Hyman is stapled to McDavid and Big Jess

Hyman's wearing 18. Obviously Neal had to be bought out then.

He wore 11 with the Leafs, not gonna work here!

But man I wish the Oilers would stop recycling the same numbers every time we have a new player.

Any established player is going to have his own choice. Team may only have a slight control over young role players (unless Lou or Burkie are running things).

It'll be interesting to see what new players choose for numbers now that they are all new millennials without a birth year to fall back on.

I had not commented on this thread, but just wanted to say that I am thrilled to have been completely wrong. Might be a tad premature as we're only 5 games in, but right now I wouldn't swap Hyman for Hall straight up, nvm the $500k cap savings.

Honestly, I thought the hype was more because he played in Toronto than anything. I never remembered him standing out much watching Leafs games, but he sure as hell stands out now. What a great addition. Perfect fit.

I hope this comment doesn't age like a lot of my other ones...
