With the way things are going in UFA and teams starting to not sign as many aging players to big contracts, taking what the Islanders offered was smart by Eberle and his agent. He's 29, did have 19 goals but only 37 pts. I think 5.5 mill on a 5 yr deal is a bit high for him. At his age, his best years are behind him. I always felt even when he was in his prime given the holes in his game and how 1 dimensional he was, the 6 mill he was making was high. He's older, the production has fallen off yet he's only making 500 k less. Good for him but I think this will probably be a bad contract real quick.

I think by year 3 of this contract it will be pretty ugly. He has a full NMC first 2 years a a 16 team list he supplys the last 3 years. GM's are getting a bit crazy what they are paying for older 20 goal guys. I would rather have Zucker for the same $$$.

Probably could have got a bit more on the open market, but good for him getting another solid payday regardless.

You are kidding my right? He had 37 pts and you think he would have been paid more?

Yup, cause he was good in the playoffs. And everyone on islanders took a production hit this year while they were "learning how to win" from Trotz. Someone would have given him 6M at least.

Only real knock on Ebs was his playoff performance a couple years ago, and he did a nice job of saving all his energy through the year to prove everyone wrong for those 8 games. Clutch big game performer status fully restored ;)

That is a damn good contract for Eberle. I would have expected roughly $1 mil less annually, but I'm no agent, scout, or GM. If he's good for 25 goals/year over the term, certainly. As for the open market, who knows what someone might have paid him?

I agree. Eberle and his agent did an excellent job in this negotiation. I think it's easily a 1 mill overpay. I don't know what Lou is doing in New York. First he give Nelson 6 mill, now he gives Eberle 5.5 mill.

Counterpoint: Eberle is actually really good. Agreed that at 29, 5 years is a bit long, but it's totally unrealistic to expect to sign him to a shorter deal.

No. In a small sample size he had a goalless streak while saddled with Lucic so he is obviously garbage.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Good for him. I was curious how much he was going to get.

Slightly more than I thought, for probably 3 years longer than I anticipated. Kind of figured Eberle would take a shorter term deal at a cheaper rate, betting on himself to return to a higher point total and then cash in a on bigger payday at the end of it.

Instead, took a potentially a little less if he were to return to form over the duration, but got some extra security.

Pretty reasonable signing for both parties I'd say.

I kind of expected him to end up in Calgary, to be honest, so re-upping on the Island is fine with me.

His agent deserves an award for that contract. Ebs is a really good skilled player when he's on his game but at 29 I see it as an overpay and over length contract. Guess he sort of earned it though with a decent performance in a contract year. He's a pretty good fit with the Islanders but can't see him living up to it.
