"SUNRISE, Fla. — Dale Tallon and Joel Quenneville are together again, and the Florida Panthers are ready for them to recreate their magic.

Quenneville — who is second on the NHL's all-time victory list — was hired Monday to coach the Panthers, who started their off-season with a splash. It's also a reunion, after Tallon hired Quenneville to coach Chicago in 2008 and wound up watching him win three Stanley Cups there in a six-year span."

Panthers are quickly digging themselves out of a huge hole...finally.

I am a little surprised that a high profile coach like Quenneville who could get any job he wanted, picks a no one gives a crap team like Florida.

Just look at their roster and the rumour of who they will add on July 1st. They had their pick. Will be interesting to see who Luongo's retiring will affect the team's cap situation. All their core guys are signed

I believe this is the Luongo cap recapture penalty distribution:

Retires in 2019 $2.84 to Vancouver, $1.287 to Florida for three years
Retires in 2020 $4.26 to Vancouver, $73K to Florida for two years
Retires in 2021 $8.52 to Vancouver, $0 to Florida for just the last year of his contract.

The talking heads have already said he will be on Long Term Injured Reserve. Some form of the Marion Hossa 'My pads are chaffing' excuse. NHL needs to nut up at some point and stop this from happening. Seriously, Ferance was too injured to play but 100K bike tours were just fine?

Yeah, I can't imagine Luongo actually retiring...although it doesn't really hurt Florida too much if he does. Really bad for Vancouver. If Luongo holds on for another year or two, Vancouver will probably be entering their contention window, if they're slapped with an $8.5 cap hit, they're in big trouble.

If the nucks were to trade back for him and he "holds out / doesnt report" and they suspend him does the contract still apply to the cap?

Not so fast, that could be the out for Looch. Purchasing medical opinions, 2nd opinions, 3rd opinions that say it's over for 27 doesn't count against the cap. Do it, Oilers.

I agree 110%. Clearly the league has shown they condone this so Oilers need to take advantage. Now, how you get #27 to fall in line with that I don't know, but where there's a will there's a way.

From what I recall, the Hawks didn't start winning Cups until after Tallon got the boot in favor of Stan Bowman, so if I were a Panthers fan I'd hold off on planning the Cup parade.

I personally think Coach Q is a product of the situation he landed in during his tenure with the Hawks; team was already on the upswing with Denis Savard as he only got fired due to issues with the front office.

Coach Q was fortunate enough to coach a big spending Blues team pre-2004/2005 lockout when 75% of the budget conscious league had 30-35 million dollar payrolls yet couldn't do jack squat with it. It's as if STL was spending just as much as Colorado, Detroit, and Dallas yet they didn't achieved a fraction of what those teams did when buying championships was prevalent.

He didn't do any better in Colorado as well. One of the more overrated coaches in the league....
