Interesting question: Is today's roster minus McDavid better or worse than other rosters over the past decade?

My Take

Take away McDavid's points and the team -- over the past two seasons -- produces on par with 10-11 and 14-15, both of which saw some pretty egregious rosters, especially on the blueline. So has the team actually gotten any better, or is it just that McDavid is pulling the team towards the finish line? I think today's defense is better than what we have historically had (even with the tire fire that is Kris Russell), and I think that was PC's main goal coming in. But he got that improvement by gutting our forward pool and making panicked, impulse moves, which, themselves, further hamstrung our ability to surround McDavid with talent up front. And that, in theory, would be fine (you can win the cup with a stacked D + McDavid), but PC did not stack the D, he simply made it borderline sufficient.

In the end, I don't think today's roster, minus McDavid, is meaningfully better than what we've had in the past. Draisaitl + Nuge + Puljujarvi + Klefbom + Larsson is not better than Hall + Nuge + Eberle + Klefbom + Petry (who, btw, make only 1.5MM more than Russell, a difference that is less than what we are paying in buyouts this year).

I think a proper roster, minus McDavid, should be able to push for a wildcard spot (e.g., Pens without Crosby, Caps without Ovie, Tampa without Stamkos). The roster above would push for the bottom of the standings. There's simply too many bubble players and too many bottom tier players forced to play up in the line-up, which is a pattern that has repeated itself with alarming consistency over the past decade.
