There has to be more to this deal. Or else cap room is way more valuable than I ever imagined.

Well this is a great deal for Lubo and his family. He gets to go back to L.A.
Best of luck to him, and if they make the playoffs I'll be cheering for him(now that Pronger, and Burke are gone its ok, right?)

I'll never say "Things can't get any worse" ever again.

We save $1.6M in cap space. We trade our best player for one of the most overpriced, and overrated players in the entire league in Ryan Whitney.

I've long thought Tambellini was an idiot and not fit to be a GM in the NHL, but this is a move that he should absolutely, 100% lose his job over.

Ryan Whitney is a terrible player.

If this allows us to throw another 1.6 to our young players that we need to build around then I think this was a great deal. Lubo was not taking us to the playoffs this year... Chances are he was not going to win us the cup in the next three. So why pay him to stick around.

I would have liked a better pick. But I am happy with the cap space.

I just checked, Whitney is 4.0 Lubo is 5.6, both signed through 2012-13. So it isn't that much of a savings.

How long is Whitney signed for? He's only just 27, so a lot younger than Visnovsky, but at the same time, his numbers haven't been nearly as good the last couple of years. Is that because of his play? Or because he's been playing behind Gonchar, Niedermayer, etc.?

When he came in to the league, I thought he was a really good player...his stock has fallen a bit though.

Whitney is a 27 year old underacheiver with a large cap hit. You do not REBUILD by picking up 27 year old guys when the core of your team is going to be the 18,19,20 year olds we have now and will be getting in the draft. This move only frees up 1.5 mill or so?

Terrible trade. Not surprising to me though as I thought that because we did not ship out the garbage a year or more ago when we should have that they might be immovable now.

This is one of the crazier things you've said. If 27 is too old how is Visnovsky (32) any better. On a young team you want guys who can grow with team, not guys in the twilight of their careers. Whitney has a good pedigree and has always played behind much better defensemen. I imagine he'll at least get a shot at being the man here. This is a great trade.

Yeah this is Whitney's chance to be a top pairing dman here. If not liking Edm is his source of motivation to get a contract elsewhere, then so be it as that means management can get a better trade from him in the future.

Visnosky is not better age wise that is why I was not opposed to him being dealt for a long time.

I'll also take the scouting word on this player from the general fan population and specifically Anaheim fans who have almost unviersally said the Oilers got killed in this trade. Whitney will be what 32 by the time out newest prospects are ready to be ready to do something. We also only gain 1.6 cap relief and we also are still beholden to a long term deal so if this guy tanks or is gilbert version 2.0 we are still screwed.

If we were going to trade Visnosky we needed to get picks, very young prospects, get even more cap relief and be ready to have a draft that sets us up for years to come.

Anaheim is in a total situation than Edmonton.

So if I'm a Duck fan I think this, "We can give up 1.6 in cap and get Visnovsky for Ryan Whitney?????? DO IT!!!"

I seriously hoped if Lubo was traded it would be to free up "signifigant" cap space and get some good picks. Instead we lose only 1.6 in cap and get an overpaid and overrated 27 year old.

A bargaining chip that would have been great for this teams future is gone now.

This deal stinks on ice.....

I dunno what your talking about Ryan Whitney is really good. He was on team USA, he's alot younger than Lubo too. I believe his cap hit is $5Million tho but I'm not sure on that as Nhlnumbers is down at the moment. This is a great trade for us.

What were you expecting for Grebs? A first round? icon_lol The guy is not nearly worth the cash he's paid now, and will likely be in Russia next year unless you throw more money than he's worth.

This Lubo deal is crazy bad. The differential in talent does not justify another ~1.6M in cap space.

Is Tambo trying to get us the #1 pick for 2011 as well as 2010? With this type of trade, and more to come in the summer I suspect so. Can someone in Edmonton please go and steal the first round pick off him before he trades that as well.

Is Tambo trying to get us the #1 pick for 2011 as well as 2010? With this type of trade, and more to come in the summer I suspect so. Can someone in Edmonton please go and steal the first round pick off him before he trades that as well.

Isn't that what everyone wants? Bottom out for 3-5 years ala Pitts/Wash/Chi etc and get top 3 picks to build a contender instead of hovering around 8th place every year.

And with the 1st pick overall the Edmonton Oilers are proud to select from the Swedish highschool league: Lars Svendsson.

I loved him in LA so it goes without saying that I loved him on the Oilers. Very talented, big contract and getting up there in age. Ryan Whitney is still young enough to grow with this team and he can put up the points.

I don't mind this deal depending on what Whitney's contract $ look like.

If Seguin gets 51 pts:

G2K= $100
V4ance=$100

We save about.. 1.6 million a season? Or something like that.

The team isn't going to win anytime soon. Lubo is a player you want if your team is going to make a splash in the near future. I'm sure he would've been asking for a trade at some point.
