Why do we only play well with Garon in net?

Not really a completely fair observation. I bet if Brodziak hits the net in the 1st to make it 2-1 this is a different game.

At this point, I would honestly take Allan Rourke at $2.9M over Steve Staios. If a rookie was playing like Staios, they would have been outta town long ago. His 36 PIM is brutal - most of those penalties are because he is either a) out of position or b) just a spaz.

Incidentally, with a +1 tonight, Rourke is now the only Oiler with a positive +/- : +1.

I don't know - I don't recall seeing a rookie play like that (not for long anyway).

I think the "new" NHL has passed Steve by - let's hope the Thrashers (or some other idiot GM) is willing to give up a blue chipper like Braydon Coburn at the TD for him (what the hell were they thinking?)

Positively though no one can really say we dont score. 2/13 is not bad and 2/4 in the third is amazing IMO.

Well you really cannot get too excited about that as Budaj did not look even remotely good. I think you are looking for Mac-T positives in an overall embarrassing effort.

I just listened to the post game podcast on Oilers.Nhl.com and Mac-T's too comments were mental mistakes and collectively didn't have our legs. Brodziak also mentioned the team not been ready to play.

Are these not all things the coach controls? If one guy or 2 guys have no legs it can be expected, for the whole team it obviously has something to do with preparation. Also mental mistakes are obviously part of the preparation too, either Mac-T's system is too difficult, these guys just don't want to play it or they are not practicing it effectively?

Everything that is wrong with this team points to Mac-T, it is time for some new blood and new ideas behind the bench. This team has been coming out flat for 7 + years and only managing to turn it on after they score for much too long.

I'm sure in this mornings meeting Mac-T is telling the players not to worry as the Ducks play tonight so they will be tired tomorrow and easy pickings. Another embarrassing effort against a team that played the night before is in the cards for our Oil tomorrow.

Mac-T

I don't think that (goal) would have done anything based on the way we were playing at that time

There was nothing through the first period or the first 30 minutes of the game that led me to believe we were able to correct that train wreck.

With the exception of Joni (Pitkanen), the way he skated tonight, nobody had any jump in the game. Then to compound things, we made a lot of mental mistakes. Then we got frustrated and then looked like a very bad hockey team for two periods.

This team is a manifestation of its coach and the only way we get any better/more consistent is with a better more consistent coach.

When the Vancouver Luongo played the ducks in the playoffs last year in the fifth game, the shots were around 60-20 for ducks. 40 shot deficit. I don't know about record, but that is pretty brutal in the playoffs. Bad game tonight. Horcoff continues to score. Torres scored finally. Well now were sitting at 4 back of .500. We have to get a big winning streak going to gain some ground.

I know you are looking for a ratio, but in terms of one total minus the other this one ranks up there: Nordiques vs. Boston, March 23, 1991. (Bruins outshot the Nordiques 73-26 in a 3-3 tie.)

This one had blowout written all over it and thanks to some Roli/Garon heroics we end up with a misleading 4-2 loss to anyone just looking at the scoreboard. Crazy to think with how bad we have played this year, we haven't lost a game by more then 3 goals.

The Staios problem seems to be compounding itself on a nightly basis. With 3 more years at a $2.7 cap hit...I fear this problem will get worse before it gets better.

A couple of positives:
-Hate to rag on the guy...but in these 4 games against COL, has Smyth looked like the kind of guy you want to be paying $7.5million this year?
-The schedule will be discussed at the upcoming board of govenor's meetings...these divisional games are starting to get boring/repetitive (and it doesn't help that we seem to suck wind the majority of the times we play them...although one could argue that applies to the balance of the league as well).

Hmmm...

All I can say, is that I still like Rourke and Horcoff. But I don't know about everyone else on the team. confused4

Can we come out even more flaccid, lazy and useless next game...you know so we could give the other team a sporting chance. Like really angryfire

I'm glad I only watch parts of the game.

The most telling observation in watching the Oilers this year... When we play a "solid" game, we either win by a goal or via shootout. When we play a poor game, we're simply not even close to competing. I tuned this game out after 2 periods. I wonder what kind of positives Mact pulled out of this one!

So the team didn't have its legs and wasn't prepared according to the presser...

How many times have we heard that?

I think MacT has a bucket full of fortune cookies filled with excuses and on the way to each presser he pops one open. Last night it was "no legs or preparation". The "poor coaching" ones get tossed in the garbage and he pulls another one though.

Its a simple equation

(G * U ) * M

where G = Games, U = % where team failed to play 60 mins, M = # of seasons with Mac-T running the show.

(82 * .9) * 7.25 = 535 times

The Oilers' best defensive players are looking bad right now. This goes for Stoll and Staios.

However, I think one reason that they're looking so bad is that they are being forced to compensate for the lax defensive play from other guys.
Some examples:
For Stoll, he isn't scoring because he's so preoccupied with keeping the puck out of his net.
For Staios, he's getting so many penalties because he's the only defenceman who is showing toughness, and is getting overwhelmed with having to handle all of the dirty work.

That's my impression of what happened last night.

Oh, and the oilers forwards REALLY need to pick up the late pass in the high slot. There were TONS of free shots from the high slot.

I have to agree with the Staios comment. With Souray and Greene gone, it seems like he's the only hard nosed physical D-man we got right now. Unfortunately it's looking like a long time before either returns.
