with a stranglehold on last in the NW, and the Canucks now 7 points up.....this game and the next 5 to 10 are absolutely must wins. They have to play with desperation. Watching the Canucks win on the 6th or 7th shot last night left me nauseated.....
So this is what hope feels like?

Yes, the Canucks are 7 points up.
However
- The Oilers are 2 games in hand.
- The Canucks are playing WAY over their heads right now.
- The Oilers are severely underachieving.
- The two teams still have 3 head-to-head games left, 2 at Rexall.
I am not in full panic-mode, yet.

Not full blown panic mode 'YET' Bomb, but with a couple more poor showings from the Oilers we should be.
And I must say that I don't have the most confidence in this group to turn things around. I hope they can, but they really seem to be lacking in something I can't put my finger on. Im not sure that a good dman is enough to pull them out of this funk their in.
Anyone else feel this way?

Actually, I saw some very good things on Thursday and Friday night. Two losses that could have easily been wins.
To me, that's the sign of a team about to bust out of a slump. It's the opposite of the end of a hot streak, where you're winning games you should be losing.
4 games this week, and I honestly think the Oilers win 3 of them.

They were a little better in the last 2 games but they are such a fragile bunch. The sad thing is the core of this group has been together for a few years and its the same year after year. It would be nice if they could figure things out.
Actually I thought the game against Van was the best that Lupul has played. He seems to be giving a little extra effort. He needs to learn how to battle on the boards. I would have thought that a guy with his size would be more assertive but I guess thats not his game. I guess I needed some time to figure out his style of play. I hope he keeps battling.

I agree they played a lot better but still lost....thats what Phoenix was doing before they went on their winning streak. Playing a lot better but still losing, unfortunately they did it for 10 games before they really started a streak. This team has been so hot and cold all year long, and they can win any game when they set their minds to it.....I seriously wonder if its a motivational problem at times. I actually am expecting the Oil to start to streak....and I did notice they have 2 games in hand on the Canucks but its still nauseating to see the Canucks go on a 7 game winning streak, of which I believe 4 or 5 were in OT or a shootout....
I am hoping the Canucks have a tough road trip when they take on every team in the Northeast in the next week or so, I think the Bruins are the only exception of the Division. Hard to know who to cheer for to lose when Toronto plays the Nucks
So this is what hope feels like?

This post reminded me of a good quote for the Oil:

"You put your mind to it, you can accomplish ANYTHING."
-George Mcfly from Back to the Future
If this team plays like they've been playing lately, but STOPS with the friggin turnovers in their own end and the neutral zone, they should get the W tonight.

Any Oilers post with a Back to the Future reference is golden!
I'm not giving up on this team yet. They should have won that game on Thursday and played well on Friday. Now with most of the guys healthy (except for Schmeebs) I think they are ready to hit their stride. I really liked the way Hejda and Roy played on Friday (except for his OT gaffe of course) and I hope the Czech line can keep gelling. Time for a winning streak, can't let these teams get too far in front.
Go Oil!

I just hope they show up and compete. I'm tired of the lack of energy for huge portions of the game. Start strong and roll it every shift, everybody hit someone, force the puck, keep it simple and work hard.

Roy has had a solid game. Like i'm very impressed. Roli is playing like he was in the begining of the year. Defense is actually getting the puck out of the zone. So far good game. Lets see what happens in overtime.

Yoda says, "Difficult to see the future is." I share those sentiments when it comes to tonight's game. I could see them win, I could just as easily see them lose. However, if they play the way they did against Vancouver Friday night, they just might sneek out with 2 points. If they do win, MacT. should take the players down to Tijuana for a little "fiesta"!

You know how it is with the Oiler's at times, when the going get's tough they choke. But feel good in the fact the last 10 games they'll will finally start finding their form and score goals and play defence like madmen. Hopefully it won't be too late by then.

Although Mathieu Roy played a solid game on Friday, will his HUGE gaf in overtime keep him out of tonights game?
Assuming Smidly is still injured.
Thoughts.

I say put him (Roy) back in cuz i can guarantee you he won't make that mistake twice, he seemed pretty solid other than that. Besides I'm convinced someone in Vancouver sold their soul for this 7 game winning streak (explains all the trees down in Stanley Park too). I'm not sure we have a lot of options on D do we? I mean other than pray a lot.
So this is what hope feels like?

If Tjarnqvist gets healthy (don't know what his status is), I'd have to think he'd draw back in, but until then, Roy stays in the lineup and MacT leans heavily on his "top four" (I use that term loosely) of Smith/Staios/Greene/Hejda.
Yuck. I just threw up in my mouth a little typing that last sentence...

Greene's play has slipped recently, so a spot in the pressbox for a game might not be a bad thing, and isn't that surprising, really.
But to sit while Roy is in? Can't say I agree with that.

If they intend to play either of MAB or Roy over Greene & the kid is actually healthy (& over the nose/sinus problems), then it is a complete mystery to me what the hell MacT is thinking.
I'm kinda wary of trusting Sportsnet's website, though. We do know that Ladislav Smid is out, but as far as I know, Daniel Tjarnqvist & his hip pointer are still listed as "questionable"...
Happy to announce a permanent Oilfan vacation.

Gene Principe on the TEAM said that Tjarnquist will play tonight, Matt Greene won't (to sit in the box and look at what's going on), Mathieu Roy stays with Bergeron, and Roloson in net.
Earlier in the show (I didn't catch why) they said something about Torres being out as well.

Has anyone else heard this bit about Torres being scratched tonight?
Soon as I read that, I see along the ticker on TSN that Boston has recalled a D & G, while only sending down a G. By my count, the Bruins now have 8 D on their active roster.
Now Im not saying anything, but there HAVE been Stuart for Torres rumours out there...
In fairness to Hall, I've wanted to throw a waterbottle at Eakins all season.

I would hate that trade. This organization will regret the trading of Torres, unless a true difference maker comes back our way. Stuart is NOT one of those.
I really hope when it's time to trade a forward for a D-man, Raffi is not the payment.
As for tonight, I expect a big night from a few players: Horc, Winch, Loops, and Smytty. 5-3 Oilers... Roli will continue to look shaky and MacT will continue to snub Jussi.

Although I agree with you re: value of Torres...You do have to give something to get something and he is one of our more valuable commodities. A guy like him and his <$1million/RFA-status will fetch a lot more than Horcoff, Lupul, and other guys.
Plus...although we would miss Torres, if he fetches us a blueliner that can make a tape-to-tape outlet pass and QB the PP, we would be ahead at the end of the day.

I 100% agree with you on that. If I were some people, I wouldn't get so hyped up, according to hfboard, Brad Stuart and his wife are expecting a child any day so that is why the emergency call up.
