If we max our cap, 3.225 goes to Brown's ghost, so the new guy has 0.95M left to play with.

Nice to know I was/we were right to want him banished to the AHL after game 9.

Brown had his chance to show something, missed his window, but the GM still doubled down on their mistake with the next guy on the hook.

On the bright side, the 2025 season after we'll get an even bigger boost with whatever increase the cap will be, plus Next year's increase that will be eaten up, plus James Neal's buyout coming off the books. Unfortunately we'll have $2.3M on the books from Campbell's buyout by then. When was the last time we didn't have a buyout on the books?

Wonder if there's any teams without buyouts on the books?

Every team makes mistakes, some last longer than others.

There was an Atlantic article after this summer that said 17 teams don't have buyouts. Some have buried contracts, some have retained, some have no dead money. I did some spot verification with capfriendly, but didn't check all the teams.

Cgy, LAK, Bos, Sea, Was, NYR, NYI, TB, Ana, Caro, Buf, Col, Tor, Win, VGK, Dal, StL.

Somehow there are teams with zero dollar buyouts like NYI with Rick Di Pietro and Buffalo with Christian Erhoff. I don't know how that works.

There must be some way to quantify the Oilers method of seeing finally being out from under a buyout as a chance to do another buyout. We just love us some buyouts!

Cap space usage does seem like a management study. Seems like cap space available at the start of any season divided by projected cap space available at the end of the previous season. If you have a pattern of this number approaching zero, you have a team that blows cap space like a mid-boom rig hand on his first day off shift.

A simple buyout calculation would be number of buy out slots used / maximum number of buyout slots possible. The close a team gets to 1, the more they use the buyout. Sadly, capfriendly has locked past caps behind a paywall and I'm not willing to look elsewhere.
