Regulation losses = icon_dead

Teams like Vancouver and Columbus are finding ways to grab points. I like the grit & physicality of the past couple games but guys need to step up & score. Nice to see Horc putting points up! Time for Cole, Cogs, & Nilsson to do the same.

a .500 team goes .500 on this four game road trip.

They're in this game take a couple of questionable penalties with some questionable goaltending and add in some questionable PK'ing with a dose of questionable PP time.

Their record in DAL ain't very good but I'm surprised just how many "no names" are in their line-up. This is winnable. Or at least a point, right?

Sets up a big game Saturday night against CAL. Lose this one and they lose the slight, ever so slight advantage the team has on the two teams directly underneath.

I am ever the glass half full guy so I will look for positives in this BORING game. #1 Physical-the whole team (except for Cole) seemed willing to play physically which is contrary to what we have seen for most of the season.
#2 Smid-continues to develop, given the added responsibility with the injuries on the back end into a physical, effective, ugly to play against dman.
#3 I am impressed with the physicality that Peckham brings to the rink every night.
However, even an optimist can see that Cole needs and wants out NOW. He is barely going through the motions out there.

Funny how you mention the no names. Cogliano on a line with JFJ and Stortini?

I thought the pt. of getting rid of Glencross, Reasoner, Stoll, and Torres was to make room for incoming guys like Potulny, Brule, Cole, and another farm guy in Schremp?

Apparently not.

....yet another season of .500ish hockey folks.

Another stand pat front office. Zero moves.

MacT's 9th year behind the bench.

A 3C dressed up in 1C clothes.

Another wasted year of 83 playing with absolute plumbers. This team has one offensive talent, and there's simply no urgency to surround him with another offensive piece or two. No urgency whatsoever.

Another year of underachieving hockey.

Another year in 9th-10th place.

Another year of excuses. Another year of 'we learned some lessons and played hard.'

Only in Edmonton, only in Edmonton.

Next year, there won't be a prognosticator mag in the land that will have the Oilers in the playoffs, let alone winning the division.

It's beyond poor. Every year, the same.

"The Oilers are playing like they'd rather die than lose."

lighten the hell up!

Or, were you present and contributed to the discourse here at the Big Time about the Oilers questionable drafting? Poor drafting. Poor evaluation? The farm team? Total lack of there for a couple of years. The root of all this is what lies, what MacT like to call the cavalry. There is no cavalry. Too small, too stupid, too slow.

Yeah, one only has to look down at Springfield and wonder about the lack of depth in the organization. Makes a person wonder whether the team should be losing some of these "core" guys in favor of draft picks.

More of the same, then.

Same scouting group? Pro and amateur?

More of the same, then.

The Oilers are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Draft skill? Too small, not sufficient mettle. Little gamesmanship.

Draft size? No hands, no sense, no touch. Dumb as a doorknob. Isbister-dumb.

Really really frustrating...now 0-4-1-1 watching the Oil in Dallas.

1) Why was Cogliano on a line with JFJ and Stortini? Proof MacT needs to be fired now!
2) Moreau with a really dumb double minor in the 2nd w/Edm building momentum
3) Yeah Horcoff has no one-timer, and I'm probably the hardest on #10 in this forum. But why does MacT have him out there in the perimeter for the one-timer? Coach needs to separate Penner & Horcs and have both guys in front of the goalie screening on two diff PP units. #10 isn't that bad in front of the net & it's the coach's responsibility to put his players in a position to play to their strengths opposed to their weaknesses.
4) I've never been harassed so much in my life during a game...but I managed to have fun...somewhat

Looking objectively we were 2-2 on this road trip and that isnt bad really. If we can come out of this up coming home stand 3-1 or even 2-1-1 we will be in OK shape. We need to be about 5 games over five hundred on our remaining games to make the post season so aslong as we play .500 on the road and make hay at home we should make the dance.

What I'd like to see is just a bit of movement on the PP, what if Souray slid down to that area for a feed? Guaranteed, if someone who actually HAS a one-time shot were sitting over there waiting....just for a few seconds....maybe the front of the net might open up for Hemsky off the wall. Either the pass through 3 sticks doesn't get to Horcoff, or he half-whiffs and leaves a pile of splinters behind.

I'm not sure why, between the coach and the players, no one realizes that the PP is better when it's fluid rather than static.

Well looks like the game stats works. I'm going to hold off on adding point/goal/assist streaks and the winning / losing streak of opponents to the pre-game thread until I have enough data to make it worthwhile. Somehow I've gotten a couple MSNs and a couple PMs on where is this feature. 2 games of player stats and 3 days of standings is not much of an archive to be significant.

Im trying to figure out why we havent played MacIntyre for awile. It seems to me that we could have used him in last nights game. Its pretty bad when Hemsky starts going after someone. We need more physical play in our game.

Youre god damned right we could have used him. The thing MacT consistently fails to recognize is that a guy like Macintyre can have an impact on the game just sitting on the bench. You dont have to play him the same as the other fourth line guys. He is an intimidation factor. If guys start running around you send him out for a shift or two and it keeps people honoust. It works. Ask Ales Hemsky if he would prefer Mac to be in the line up on a semi consistent basis.

This whole business of only playing him when there is a pre aranged fight with a heavy weight on the other team completely defeats the purpose. What good does it do to have him do nothing but fight Boogard/Laraque/Godard? None at all. He is completely inefective. Most of those heavyweight players dont even hit our smaller guys. It is Laraque all over again. Fighting only by appointment and consent.

The problem is completely obvious to anyone who watches the games. Guys who are not heavyweights act like they are invincable. They run around with no fear of retribution because the worst case scenario is a Moreau 'takedown'.

I watched the Calgary game and how Regehr and Pheneuf all of a sudden developed a healthy respect for 83. I watched the Boston game where Mac went out and had a chat with Lucic right after he took a run at Hemsky. He disapeared after that. I watched him destroy Letang with a momentum changing hit. Too little to late on that night but you get the idea.

Macintyre can be very effective and exactly the sort of player we need on a lot of nights. But as Skoobz so elequently put it he has been neutered by our coach.

Couple articles about Moreau from last night's game:

Oilersnation:
Quote:

It’s not the first time Moreau has taken ill-timed, costly penalties this season, so he doesn’t get a pass for a one-off. While I’m not in the camp of people yelling for Moreau to be stripped of the captaincy, let’s get real here. Moreau lost his temper. He took stupid penalties on two different occasions that led to the Oilers losing a game they had to win.

Staples (Journal):
Quote:

Whatever the Oilers did wrong in the past, they responded properly this time, first with goalie feisty Dwayne Roloson coming in to give Ott a bash, then with snarly Ladislav Smid jumping on the guy, and finally with the fierce captain, Ethan Moreau, piling on and punching Ott in the head.

Personally, I love Roli's response to the hit on Gilbert! These guys showed Team Toughness. However I think Moreau has been taking a few too many penalties, most of which are really beginning to annoy me since they are stupid ones (ie.hooking a guy while you are skating to the bench)
Yes I think a Captain needs to show leadership and stick up for his teamates but when Roli knocked him down and Smid went on top of Ott and gave him a few shots, that was probably enough. Heck, I'd rather have seen Moreau hit one of their guys (Ott preferably)from behind when he wasn't touching the puck and stood over him saying, "this is what you get". Crash
(Rather than him punching Grossman when his gloves weren't even off)

Which do YOU agree with??

maybe you can't please eveyone. The hardasses say the Oilers need to stick together and fight for oneanother at any cost... or those that feel they should let these things slide and worry more about the two points. Integrity and character and reputation be damned.

Obviously, I'm with MacT and the hockey-types... "proper response". Sends a message and creates a culture.

Is it just me or does it seem that the Oilers finished way more checks and threw many more hits (a number of them BIG hits) on this 4-game road trip than at any point this season? As disappointing as it was to lose that huge game last night and go 2-2 on the road trip, I've enjoyed watching them play with the intensity all trip. A number of big hits, 8 or 9 fights in 4 games, a clear showing of team toughness, and not being pushed around by other teams, rather, often initiating contact and conflict as opposed to being dragged-into it.

The way they played these 4 games were the furthest thing from soft, if you're looking for some positives..

Roli let in bad goals.

Moreau several stupid and costly penalties.

Horcoff, Moreau, and Staios again showed their lack of leadership.

If you have your PK out, then you don't have your best offensive players out. And even if you did have your best offensive players out, you only have 4 to their 5.

Make no bones about it, a penalty hurts you in more ways than just giving the opposition a chance to score an easier goal. It also takes 2 minutes where your team can't score.

True. Just ask any team that has played the Oilers in the last 20 games. Scoring on the PK isn't all that hard!

I prefer to watch the Oilers are the road.

They don't feel that compulsion to appease 16,000+ of the local yokel's who can be too persnickety at times.

I don't know if anyone noticed this, but they took away JFJ's assist on Reddox's goal. I guess they decided he didn't touch it, as the goal is now being scored as Reddox from Smid and Brodziak.

So the drought continues. Maybe the NHL couldn't resist keeping the joke going.
