Lol. Lowetide just said on radio when I was driving in that Spector said it won't be the Oilers. Nice one Spec! Getting into the Gregor club

Here is Spec's comment from yesterday:

Mark Spector @SportsnetSpec
Oilers offered Jake Virtanen a PTO, but feeling is he will go elsewhere.
My take: That is for the best.
EDM has one project already in Puljujarvi. They don’t need a second one.

Some nice bait in there for Pulju fans.

Not able to see where Friedman actually said Virtanen was picking the Oilers either.

I love it when Spec says something about JP. Makes all the hardcore JP super fans MELT DOWN. It's pretty entertaining.

Can't say seeing sad attempts to engagement farm on twitter is that impressive to me. I guess it depends if you align with old Spec on which players you want to see torn down.

I don't look at it as a player being torn down. In my opinion, it seems to have turned into a situation where some segment of the fan and blogger world think that you either have to believe JP walks on water as a player or you hate the guy. There is no middle ground. I don't agree with what Spec says about JP and think he goes a bit too far, and I think some of what he says is to get a reaction good or bad but I do think people go a little overboard with needing to justify JP and celebrate everything he does.

I saw a tweet from a fan going off about how amazing a person JP is because he went to do some autographs and how terrible the team would be if he got traded. Like JP is the only player who ever goes to any event to sign autographs.

You are the only person I see melt down. Then again, I stay away from twitter comments, sports radio, blog comment sections and other message boards filled with troglodytes.

That said, I used to hope to login and not see you chime in on every thread with drivel. I have evolved that opinion to hope you are still here as you serve a purpose.
A counter argument, regardless of how ill informed or ridiculous , is often needed for good information and thoughts to be shared. The contrast between your posts and the great ones is also so stark that it makes even the average ideas seem brilliant.
Keep up the good work!

99% of the comments on this board (still the smartest hockey board on the net) only say it would be a mistake to trade JP for cap space and bring in a dolt like Virtanen.
The Oilers have a cap issue but trading a productive player who is still likely to improve is not the solution.

In my opinion………Spec is as stunned as the sun is hot.

He is kinda smart though. Like Matheson, the only clicks they get never come from great content, but by bringing up why JP is no good, or why Draisaitl is pissy, or how Archibald-type players are key cogs to a winning team.

Horrible takes that either pander to a dinosaur fan base or counter any sane fan who wants this team to progress into a contender. The day reporters like that bugger off cannot come soon enough.

Spec is smart. All he has to do is mention JP in anyway that isn't saying how wonderful JP is and he instantly gets a reaction and readers. Good for his business.

Is that smart? Wouldn't be better to actually have a good take now and then on the sport he covers? Looks more like taking his job for granted and looking for cheap ways to make it look like he's getting engagement to me.

Oilers fans continue to deserve better from the media that cover this team. Better than media that feel like trolling the fan base is the best way to look like they are getting clicks.

What's his job? Is it to pander to the Oilers fan base writing stories about things they want to hear or is it to cover the team but mainly get readers. He works for Sportnet, not the Oilers. When a fan clicks on his article about JP because they don't like him being remotely hard on JP and they want to leave him a nasty comment calling him an idiot for not saying JP is elite, they have to click on his Sportsnet link to read his article. So Sportsnet and all the ads they have on their site, gets more eyes.

There are plenty of Oilers bloggers writing all kinds of fluffy pieces about how great JP is because of all the subtle things he does, how awesome it is when he poise with a Bison or has dance parties on a exercise bike. So there is a need in the market for the other side. I don't really agree with a lot of what Spec says in a lot of his articles but not everything needs to be sunshine and rainbows either.

Probably to keep management accountable and give good takes that don't age badly 90% of the time. I'm not looking for fluff, I'm personally looking for info and insight that isn't wrong all the time. Oilers fans are constantly being pushed down a dumb path by our media.

Of course you can't please everyone, obviously he is saying exactly what you want to hear which maybe you like, and trolling another set of fans. If he flipped and was positive about JP, he would make you mad, and maybe also other fans because his takes on JP would probably still be weak :) What he does most of the time though, it's almost tabloid tier engagement farming when the substance is near nonexistent.

Issue with the Oilers media overall is that their instincts are almost always wrong and full of bias that has nothing to do with how the team wins games. They're not good at their jobs in terms of providing any value and education to the fan base. Most of them are just trying to manufacture narratives they want to hear.

I guess I should have used bigger font and put what I said in bold so you could read it better. I don't agree with what Spec says, I just think it's funny how he can say the same thing over and over again and get fans so pissed off still. If I don't like what a person writes about, I just don't read or respond to them but that isn't the case with Spec.

I don't even read most of what Spec writes especially when he writes about JP. His opinion about JP hasn't really changed and I can get the premise of the article within the first paragraph or 2 so there is no point in me reading the rest.

You said you love that he trolls JP fans, so you love that instance, while another group jumps on him for it.

And yeah I rarely look at his articles too. There is really nothing to gain reading them, he never provides any insights of value. I would argue his stuff is actually the fluff that's out there. Zero new information, super predictable perspective, a consistent presentation of personal bias, maybe some trolly language to try to get the comment section hopping, and that's about it.

It's unfortunate really how little interest the journal, sun, tsn, sportsnet etc... have in getting some fresh blood to cover teams. The Oilers at least. Still seem to be trying to court the glory days fans maybe? Not sure that is the wisest approach.

I did. I said I love it because I think it's entertaining that he can still get such a big reaction out of fans. You'd think by now people would just ignore it but they don't so I think it's entertaining at how angry fans still get after so many years.

I find it even more entertaining when it's bloggers who get so bent out of shape over what Spec says to the point they point out stats and even send him information to prove him wrong. You'd think guys in the business of reporting like bloggers, would just let it go because Spec has found a place in the market that gets him readers good or bad and he is doing it to get readers. Without readers, he wouldn't have a job. Bloggers are doing the same thing, trying to get more eyes on their stuff.

So, what you like from Oilers media is entertainment via them trolling Oilers fans with bad takes. K, I get the full picture now.

That doesn't seem like what a sports team media should be able to say their primary value is though, is it? We shouldn't expect more?

I like entertainment and I like information. For entertainment and a look into more old school thinking, I go to Spec. For current information, I go to guys like Nugent - Bowman. Maybe you don't agree but sports is not life or death. I nor my family won't die if I don't follow sports. I love my teams and want them to do well always but sports is a distraction and entertainment for me. I don't know you so maybe sports is way more serious for you.

But this is getting exhausting. Believe whatever the hell you want about what I apparently think. Many people like yourself, all know more about how I apparently think and feel than I do. I've been told MANY times by various people who tell me what I am saying and what I am thinking. I really don't give a crap what most of you in here think about me. I come here to voice an opinion. My opinion is generally different than lots of others in here and having a different opinion regardless of the BS that some of you spew about this place not being very good if everyone said the same thing isn't true. Being different isn't welcomed in here. Different means you are a troll and what you say is unintelligent, which I have been told many times about my lack of intelligence. I don't care if I am ever buddies with anyone in here nor do I want to be another one of the back slappers who just regurgitate what a few of the more vocal people in this site say.

In my opinion, HFBoards might be a better fit. It appears there is less back slapping of critical thinkers on that fan site.

But please do not go.....I enjoy the chaotic rants/Not rants/My misinterpreted takes on his content

I don't know why this is turning to being so personal. You said you like that Spector is trolling JP fans, and I was trying to turn the convo to how pitiful it is that guys like Spec keep trying to do that to farm engagement because they have little other ways to get the attention of fans. Also how Oilers fans deserve better than media guys that are only concerned with trying to puke out their bad personal narratives (that are almost always found to be wrong and misguided) and trying to bait actual fans of the team into getting mad at them to stay relevant, but convo keeps going back to how you feel like you're being attacked.

You're not Spec are you? :)

Do agree on DNB, he is someone actually putting in effort to provide info to fans not constantly slanted by some personal grudges.

It is all about clicks. all you need is a catchy title and 500 words. I'm kind of surprised h hasn't posted something that's just 500 randomly generated words yet. That would make as much sense as some of his opinions.

I just want to know, why does RDOF hate JP so much?

We doomed. 2 project players in Virtanen and Pulju. Woodcroft will die from exhaustion.
