Hilariously, in response to this story, Mark Spector is tweeting about whether Arizona can have a self-sustaining team. Maybe he hasn't bothered to read the article yet, because it sure sounds like the owner is trying to make it sustaining, by not simply accepting that expenses have to be greater than revenue?

To be fair, I feel like we've all been asking that same question for about 20 years now.

I think a lot of that has been driven by people wanting them to fail, in part because of what happened with Quebec and Winnipeg in the 90s. The Coyotes big error was being used as a pawn in a real estate development game in Glendale. The Roadrunners were by far the most successful IHL franchise before the Coyotes arrived in town.

The team would be fine if they weren't 90 minutes away from the hockey fan base, and there were a series of bad owners. They also went 9 years without playoffs at once point, which is lethal to a fledgling fan base.

It's pretty lethal to a committed fan base too.

Maybe? There's really no way to know for sure because they have painted themselves into that corner with bad decisions. But it's not unfair to say that the Coyotes franchise has been in financial instability and trouble for more time than it hasn't been. It's the one constant for that franchise, whoever the owner is and whatever the contributing factors.

Lots of other franchises have had periods of trouble - Islanders, Penguins, Panthers, Hurricanes, Oilers. Everyone of them has sorted it out and come through it better and stronger. Except for the Coyotes, who basically buy a little time until the next financial fiasco.

They've almost never had a good team, and they've never addressed the big issue of being far away from all the hockey fans.

I think snooty Canadian hockey fans need to look at what Ottawa has gone through the last couple years, or Edmonton in the last years of Pocklington and see just how bad poor ownership is for a hockey brand. If it erodes support even in a center that's a hot bed of hockey then it's going to be hugely negative for a place that didn't have a team until 15-20 years ago.

Vegas has had good support because the team has been good. The Panthers in 1996 had great support - then they made the playoffs I think once in the next 14 or 15 years after that and they bled it away. The Coyotes have won playoff series only in one year in their entire time there. This is their 25th season since the move to Phoenix. They were in the post-season in four of their first five years, and then only 4 times since then. That's atrocious.

I look at how many of my friends who grew up passionate Oilers fans are now only casual supporters because of the disaster of the Lowe years, and I can't imagine how it would be to be an Arizona fan.

I think the NHL has done the right thing by the market in making owners first try to sell it there. There has always been some group willing to buy and operate the team in Arizona, so it does not make sense to move them. I appreciate the commitment to markets, because if the NHL did not have that under Bettman, then the Oilers would have been in Houston long ago.

In the Oilers case it was the rock solid loan agreement that Pocklington signed with ATB and the fact that he was handcuffed as long as EIG came along in the right timeframe and with the right dollars to meet the specifications of the agreement that prevented Puck from selling to Houston-whats-his-face.

Bettman was pretty solid there too. He was insistent that the team had to look at all options to stay in market.

I totally agree. Yet any time Bettman come up on the screen or steps on the ice in Edmonton he is roundly booed.

It really disheartens me. It makes me angry. Those were very scary times for Oiler fans in YEG. People have short memories in this city.

Well, if it helps, I think he's really embraced it. It has almost become more a tradition in hockey than anything really malicious action, IMO. In fact, when he isn't booed, he kind of courts it.

It's more a long-running joke than anything mean-spirited these days, IMO.

That is hilarious! I had no idea about this. I guess because I was so checked out on hockey after the Oilers failed and it was the peak of summer.

It does help. Thanks. I am impressed by his sense of humour about it.

Oops! I read the first comment down and apparently the booing isn't real. Though I think the article about them recording it is still true.

I just remember when he was introducing Vegas, there was a small boo, and he paused the whole thing and encourage the crowd to boo him before saying, "There, now you are a real NHL market." I think he's pretty unfazed by it all.

I don't think I realized that the NBA turned him down as an owner.

Reports today saying that the City of Glendale isn't going to continue with the lease of the Arizona Coyotes beyond the 2021-2022 season

Rumour is the Coyotes are $1.5 million behind on payments to the city.

Bring back the Nords!

Or Scouts or Barons or Aeros. But mostly the Nords.

This is fine.

Reports today saying that the City of Glendale isn't going to continue with the lease of the Arizona Coyotes beyond the 2021-2022 season

https://www.tsn.ca/arizona-coyotes-glendale-gila-river-arena -1.1683572

Rumour is the Coyotes are $1.5 million behind on payments to the city.

Crap. I guess we know where all that jersey advertisement money will be going.

What a joke. The NHL should have gotten them out of there years ago. The City finally had to do what the NHL should have long ago. Kick them out. I am sure the dozens of Coyotes fans will be heartbroken when they leave.

It’s a really nice arena district. It’s funny because the obvious answer, that Phoenix and Glendale, for whatever reason, never did, is public transit. LRT or whatever. People need a way to get to the games.

I totally agree with you. It was a few years ago that my brother and I went down to see an NFL game and there was a hockey game as well. We were staying in a vacation property in Scottsdale. We were stunned that an area with that large of a population had no public transit at all. To get to Glendale from a lot of places is far, we intended on at least for the football game doing some tailgating, have a bunch of beers at the game. We had to take a cab there and back and it was extremely expensive. The cops just must turn a blind eye because I don't know how most people get home if you are tailgating all day. There wasn't very many people drinking water from what I could tell.

I lived in Phoenix for a few years and went to several Coyotes games. The arena district is great, and the stadium is one of the best ones I have been to, not a bad seat in the building. But Glendale is so far away from most people in the valley, there is just no way they are going to go to many games. Traffic is terrible there and from Phoenix we would need to give ourselves at least an hour if we wanted to get there when the puck dropped. Tons of people live even further away in Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, and Gilbert. I met a lot of fans who said that if the team moved back to Phoenix they would start going to games again, but Glendale was just too far away to go to more than a couple games a year for them. Al this while considering that you could get tickets for as low as $25 for some games.

Lot's of people have been saying that the Coyotes have failed and should move for years. But they failed due to awful management, not because of the area. Imagine if our current management had to run a team in Phoenix? They would probably be just as bad.

This is what I always return to - the reason that the team was moved to Phoenix is because it had the most successful minor league team in North America, despite a pretty crappy rink that had some obstructed views. It was consistently a profitable team - in part because there's so many Canadians in the area especially in the winter.

Unfortunately, the team was kidnapped by a party who wanted only to do a real estate development and used the team to manage that. He made a fortune, and flipped the team as soon as he had what he needed. The franchise has suffered for that ever since.

This seems familiar... although I can't quite put my finger on why.

Oh if only he'd flip it. There must be another billionaire oiler fan out there somewhere... maybe someone that grew up in the 90's and has no attachment to stay-at-home defensemen...

I have no earthly idea what you're talking about.

This is fine.
