For the reasons you listed, punting him for nothing would have been bad enough. But they punted him for MINUS $1.33M in cap space on top of that. What a stupid move.

I see it the same as you - I hate the Eberle trade, but at least with enough mental gymnastics it can be justified in a vacuum. But the Pouliot buyout simply makes no sense.

You're both far more generous than I am on the Eberle trade - that, plus the Pouliot buyout, make zero sense to me.

Yeah....notice the "gymnastics" and "vacuum". That was a moronic trade, no two ways about it. But at least he got someone back and cap space, so in theory maybe you could argue well enough to justify it. I mean not to me, but someone somewhere could probably buy what he is selling.

Yeah, fair enough.

Both are terrible trades. Both are big question marks for me.

At least the Hall/Larsson trade made sense to some degree that doesn't require a whole lot of mental gymnastics to get to.

Yakupov pots a goal today.

Guys with 5 goals so far this year: Eberle, Hall, Pouliot, Yakupov. Oilers with MORE than 5 - McDavid, RNH, and that's it.

Yes I'm harping like a jilted ex, but it pisses me off to no end what Chiarelli has done with this team.

He has turned:

Eberle, Hall, Pouliot, Yakupov, Schultz, Davidson, and Barzal

into

Larsson and Strome.

Not a ringing endorsement.

His only positive from that atrocious exchange of talent, is the cap space they saved .. but then he blows some of it on Russell, and other minor league UFA's he took flyers on to fill the Oilers 50 contract limit that probably total up to a few Million as well.

Eberle for Strome is brutal. I just try to think, is this truly the best offer he got? Like I would assume, he called/text all teams saying hey, looking to move Ebs, interested? And thats the best he got? Weird.

Hall for Larsson I am ok with. Two different players. Both with a skill set that is needed for any team.

Benoit Pouliot - no idea why they parted ways with him this year. Why not wait till next year when cap space is needed.

Schultz - ah man, just poor management pre PC era.

Davidson? Seriously lol who cares.

The Griffin trade was atrocious. No defending him there.

If it's helpful, remember that McLellan would have killed any offence Jagr had left in his game too.

Yeah, I guess that would be really sad. Leaks to media about how the team is unhappy about Jagr. Not a legacy I would have liked to see the Oilers org end on a Lowe note.

They just mentioned at the end of the first intermission of the Oilers Vs. Knights game that Max Pacioretty left the ice and is not back.....

Injured? Traded? who knows with Marc Bergevin nowadays. Anyone heard anything about it?

Well, if anyone is unpredictable enough to trade their team captain mid-game, it's Bergevin!

Douche bag Tkchuk got a 5 minute spearing, and 10 misconduct, hoping that cheap shot douche gets on the NHL disciplinary radar, that POS will ruin some guy's career one day.

Yeah, no kidding, he's the one that started the whole fracas when he speared the Detroit player after he went off the ice, then scoots behind his teammates when <crap> goes down. He'll eventually get tuned in repayment somewhere down the line.

Gotta love that homer broadcast crew. Never picks up on Tkachuk's little slash, everything is all the Red Wings fault...

Finally saw that Tkachuk "spear"
Yeah, if I was a Flames fan I'd be choked at that call too.

2 mins for slashing, sure. Kick him out for stirring crap up, sure, but to call that a spear is a joke.

Not defending Tkachuk at all. Kid is a punk and I can't stand him. One day he'll get what he has coming, but a hearing for that?

He's likely getting the hearing for slashing a guy that's off the ice, it's what led to the whole mess, then he hides behind his players and takes jabs at guys like a douche, wanker just like the old man.

The brand new arena in Detroit is visibly on TV half empty. That is not a good sign in 'Hockeytown'. Should be able to take that nickname away.

Don't see that every night. In a hockey game at least. I'm sure there are still some frequent head choppy places in the world.

For keeping his head attached to his body? He kinda ruined what would have been a first ever historical moment for the NHL.

Attempted decapitation by Gudas tonight.

Don't see that every night. In a hockey game at least. I'm sure there are still some frequent head choppy places in the world.

Like the freaking guillotine! He's getting a few games for that, could have killed the guy.

I still don't understand why Perreault got a penalty on that play too.

For keeping his head attached to his body? He kinda ruined what would have been a first ever historical moment for the NHL.

It was probably for butt ending the back of Gudas' head immediately prior to the overhand chop. Probably.

That would be my guess too. He wasn't innocent by any stretch there...although I'm not sure he deserved the chopping block for his sin. Gudas should be donning a black mask before he delivers justice like that.

Initially, they just got 2 minutes each. Then after much debate amongst the officials, they finally gave Gudas the major he deserved. It was kind of crazy as the official was right there watching it happened and thought it was only worth two minutes. It wasn't until his counterparts convinced him that can't let players get away with two-handed chops to the head.

Yeah, I guess Perreault did a little more than I initially noticed. I had to watch it a few more times focusing only on Perreault and yeah, he probably deserved a roughing penalty there for pushing his head down like that. Fair enough.

A roughing penalty, but not a two handed chop to the back of the neck. I think there'll be a lot of agreement on this one.

Victor Rask, alleged second line center in Carolina, is a healthy scratch for a second game in a row. He's 20 games into a 4 year, 16 million contract. I'd make a phone call.

Happy for the Jets this year. I had some fun making fun of them before the season, but lots of lessons learned as an Oilers fan this year of how much brutal goaltending can really derail things for a team. Not to say I lay all the blame on Talbot, but damn it is painful when your team is about to finally start putting a game together, and your goalie decides to just collapse in net. We had some bad times under Eakins, but those were never good teams playing anything close to NHL quality D in front of those goalies. It has been very different this year.

Anyways, Jets have goaltending now! holy crap. And they are stringing really good runs together with all the talent they have. Definitely a team I will be cheering for if the Oilers can't find a way to crawl back into the playoffs.

Cheers, Kr! They're definitely playing well this year and fun to watch. Fun fact, Hendricks got hurt in training camp and missed the first bunch of games but since he's been back in the lineup, the Jets are 9-2-3...I wonder if there is something to the talk of him holding the Oilers together last year.

Eddie Lack is on waivers.

He hasn't had good numbers since Vancouver. Is this a guy you take a flyer on? Coach Todd still clearly does not trust Brossoit. That is probably something Chiarelli should have known going into the season, but here we are.

Pretty funny allowed goal in favour of the Pens today. Boston goalie laying on his back, the puck lands on his chest. The ref is putting the whistle in his mouth as Crosby hacks the puck off the goalies chest. The whistle goes before the puck goes over the line, and it's called no goal. Refs look it over, and decide it's a good goal!

Apparently there is some obscure rule hidden in the depths of the rule book that argue a goal can count if the puck is going into the net as the whistle is blown. Yet, the "intent" to blow the whistle was long before the puck is actually hit towards the net. Somehow the intent piece of thrown out the window, and a goal after the whistle counts. Crazy coincidence that it's Crosby that was the scorer.

Would the Oilers in a million years ever get a call like that in our favour? That might be the first goal I've seen where is it 100% clear the whistle went before the puck crossed the line.

Only the NHL could have both the "intent to blow the whistle", and the "goal may count if the puck is on it's way to going into the net as the whistle is blown" in the same rule book.

It's so wonderfully written. You can pretty much find something in there to confidently take polar opposite directions on any situation.

I think the spirit of the rule they dug up is that there are cases where it doesn't matter if the whistle was blown. I guess they are allowed to make a judgement call that the goal would have been scored, even if all the players on the ice stopped moving because of the whistle. Even though in this case, the ref meant to blow the whistle while the puck was resting on the goalies chest.

I think this opens up all kinds of new possibilities for ridiculous calls. Hope it's not the last we've seen of this awesome rule.
