Well, the Oilers are addicted to the belief in fantasy attributes to players that magically make the team around them better. The fans and reporters around the team believe in this mysticism too. You show them a player who's empirically proven to be mediocre, and they'll tell you that just being around him made several other (usually younger) players better.
Now a skeptic like yours truly might suggest that guy who's 22 with more games in the NHL is likely going to have improved on his 21 year old rookie season just through experience and maturity, but you'll never convince many in Edmonton of that. Rather the whole being near a guy who used to be good was the magic fix. It was pretty much a guarantee that the first time this team struggled this year, the story was going to be that we just miss Duncan Keith so GD much.
Ryan Reaves won't help and shouldn't be sought. Hopefully the Oilers understand that.
