RDOilerfan wrote on Tue, 09 February 2021 11:51 | What gives me some hope about the Oilers is other than the first game against Habs where they were completely outplayed, any of their losses, they were right there. They have split games against the Leafs and a couple of the Leafs wins they got goals from lucky plays or plays that won't happen ever again. The got some bad breaks in a few other games where pucks go off legs or asses or guys backs. They get a save or 2 more and they win a few games. The Flames game. Koskinen was flat out bad, Markstrom stood on his head and they still got 4 and were probably a little unlucky not to have a couple more in the first.
At the end of the day, they lost but they aren't losing because they are grossly outmatched, they are losing because a couple of plays or bounces didn't go their way, their goalie didn't give them a few extra stops but I do wonder if that was just flat out because he played so many games in a row and a few very correctable errors cost them.

Ya, I don't think this team is awful by any stretch, but I think the bar should be a little higher than, they aren't grossly outmatched every night. They've had some bounces go against them for sure, and they've also won one game against TOR in OT that could have gone either way (Marner had a point blank chance with about 10min to go when the game was tied), and a game against WPG where they were losing until they scored 2 goals in the last 3 minutes, so it goes both ways.
They're basically tied with Calgary for the final playoff spot. It would be a disaster for this team to not make the playoffs given the season that McDavid & Drai are having.
Like I said, I'm circling March 6th as a good time to re-visit what this team is.

They definitely can't afford to waste the start McD and Leon have had, that's for sure.
I definitely didn't envision Turris being this bad. I didn't expect him to be a defensive specialist nor did I expect him to be scoring at a top 6 rate but I did expected a 31 yr old vet of over 700 games to not be a complete disaster in his own zone and at least chip in a little offense.
I didn't expect Larsson to be as shaky has he's been His skating and puck moving weren't going to be great but the mistakes he's making are what I'd expect a first year dman fresh out of junior.
I'm a bit surprised at the struggles of Jones. With his level of experience in the AHL and some NHL, I expected him to make some mistakes but not be as bad as he's been. He played 43 games last year and towards the end of it looked like he was ready. He came back and looked like he was still a ways away which was surprising to me.
I'm a bit surprised at Nuge's start. It isn't necessarily bad with 11 pts in 14 games but in a contract year I expected a big year from him and he's on a line who's scoring 2 pts per game getting a TON of minutes especially on the PP.
So the nice thing is the Oilers are in the 4th spot even with those 4 off to slow starts. So a good chance they could improve which will help.

I don't think Turris or Larsson get much better. I think that is what you get now.
Larsson has been slowed by injuries, and Turris has been in decline for the last couple years. There were a lot of people predicting this when he was signed, so I don't think it's a big surprise.
I don't think Jones has been bad - he just hasn't been in the lineup much. He struggled in the first couple games, but he's been fine ever since. The coach just prefers older veterans so once Cowboy got in, he's been locked in to that spot.
Nugent-Hopkins, likewise, has been far from struggling. He's been a little unlucky on the scoreboard maybe, but he's getting chances on a line that's looked good generally.
The biggest hole, as it was in the off-season, is between the pipes.
