Correct, most of us knew it would be challenging, save for the small group in the pom pom brigade. I also give credit to Holland for the change he has been able to make so far. Lastly credit to all of them for having the record they do, in the end all that matters is the points column
I do think though, even in a growth year, you owe it to the team to push to improve. My biggest worry in not moving players out of that bottom 6 is that complacency grows. Guys are just happy to be along for the ride and get too comfortable in their roles.
There seems to be zero improvement from the lot of them. Take Khaira as an example. He had a rough year last year and doesnt look good this year. What harm is done in sitting him down and giving someone else a chance?
Certain jobs (McDavid and Drai) are safe for obvious reasons. I want a team, regardless of preseason goals, that is always scrapping to earn or keep a job. The longer this team goes icing an almost identical lineup, and getting identical results, the worse it will be long term for the plan to build a competitive and winning team culture.

To be fair to Holland and the Oilers, I think they want Benson and Yamamoto to play in the AHL for a good portion of this year and so they're trying to stick to their guns on that, even as the guys here are floundering. The win-loss record has given the Oilers a little bit more latitude than they might otherwise have to wait a bit longer on this.
I do think that the optimism about the bottom six was always misplaced. The players they brought in had such limited track record that they were always just spins on the roulette wheel. Making a lot of long odds bets doesn't actually improve your chances of winning much.
I will say - there has to be some emphasis on taking shots and getting to the net though. It doesn't matter if they bring in one or two other guys - if they're all standing on the perimeter and just trying to kill the clock while they're out there, this isn't going to go well for us.
"Thinking that a bad team's best players are the reason the team is bad is the "Tambellini re-signing Lennart Petrell" of sports opinions." @Woodguy55
