Holland listed off all the dmen ahead of Persson, everyone of them I don't think anyone would argue with. Persson wasn't making the Oilers. So what is the point in keeping a guy who won't be with the team next year taking ice time away from others on the farm. There isn't. I am sure if they could have got rid of manning instead they would have.

IIRC, Manning comes off the books at years end, while Persson is RFA.

I don't like this. You let Persson battle for a spot next training camp with Bouchard and Benning. Not a move that needed to happen today.

Two things here:

1) There's always time to get another tweener defenceman between this year and next. They may hope that if Green shows well he'll even sign another deal. As a free agent, Persson isn't re-signing for next year if he doesn't think there's room for him on the NHL team and barring injuries, he's got a lot of right shot guys ahead of him he'd need to beat out, even if the Oilers don't bring back Green or sign anyone else this summer.

2) He was on a one-way deal, so he's an expensive ticket on the AHL roster. One of several actually - Manning, Granlund, Jurco all on one-way deals too. At some point, the salaries tip the balance between profit and loss for your minor league team, and whether the Oilers can afford it or not, no one likes to lose money unnecessarily. I think that's probably even more exacerbated by the team failing to sell-out on so many nights this year. They have been working on forecasts that assume every seat is filled (or at least paid for) for years, so it's likely been a wake up call on the team finances to have some top line stress. That tends to focus you on controlling your costs where you're able.

Added benefit, Holland gets to look like a good guy, sending a player somewhere he may actually have a chance to live his NHL dream. Although poor Persson, if he gets a shot to play, suddenly will have three chances to get lit up by McDavid & Draisaitl now before the end of the season...

"Thinking that a bad team's best players are the reason the team is bad is the "Tambellini re-signing Lennart Petrell" of sports opinions." @Woodguy55
