I'd recommend listening to the Eakins segment of the Oilers now podcast from yesterday for some comic relief. Particularly the part about keeping positive in a bad season. The guy's had nothing but bad seasons as an NHL coach. I guess the money blunts the pain of consistent failure.

I can't decide if Eakins is the most unlucky coach or the worst coach. Personally, I lean towards him being the worst, but I hold a grudge from being a season ticket holder in his first year here.

I think if he was a good coach unlucky enough to only coach bad teams, then you'd see some improvement year over year. But with the Oilers he took a team that Krueger had in a playoff spot until a late season collapse in the final couple weeks and brought it all the way down to 24th place the following and his second year was markedly worse - the team lost something like 24 of his last 25 games.
Similarly in Anaheim, he took over a team that had just posted an 80 point season getting their prior coach fired. The next year they had 67 points in 71 games and then the season following they had 34 in 56 games. They're a little better this year but that's probably more the infusion of talent than anything he's doing. He's still going to finish without a single season with a .500 record, despite coaching in an era where 75% of teams have better than .500 records.
It's really amazing he's been able to coach 5 NHL seasons. I wonder if he'll ever get a 6th.

Not a huge fan of ever starting Campbell again, but against a pour out Ducks team is not the worst plan. Skinner is going to be a busy man in two weeks.
