Just my opinion but if Keith was coming back, we would have heard by now. The longer it drags on, the more it feels like he's going to retire, it's just hard to say it. I saw on insta, Leon is already working out so I can't see Keith who's supposedly a fitness freak, hanging out by the pool forgetting to let Kenny know he's coming back. If Keith is coming back, the Oilers know already I feel.

It would not be unreasonable to believe he’s decided to retire, but Edmonton is giving him right up the agreed upon date to announce anything official. Pretty huge decision on his part.
It sure would be nice to replace the on-ice portion of Keith with a player at 1/3 the value. Cap space is gold. Also would t be surprised we are complaining about be turnstile’d and being dash 2 on nights next season.
So we wait.

It's a massive decision for him. He's probably been playing hockey since he was a little kid, probably super competitive hockey since he was what, 10? I bet once he hit his teens, he was doing all kinds of camps and going to elite tournaments. I had a cousin who made it to the WHL, he never stopped playing hockey all year. So I bet Keith's never had another job before. Hockey has been his entire life for I bet close to 30 yrs. So it would be super hard to come to terms with it being over.

Or if he believes he has, the Oilers are giving him enough time to make an absolute decision.
Who knows? It has to be tough planning roster moves when you have a significant amount of cap space sitting in limbo.

We should change the name of this thread to Duncan Keith is an inconsiderate $&?#. What deas are the Oilers going to miss out on because he’s not sure if he wants to retire yet?
You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

Or said more positively, what deals is he saving Oilers management from by not retiring?

I love that the options are overpaid, over the hill dman or bad trade deal.

TreenasOil saying he is leaning towards retiring.
We will see.

Crap. The draft is today? So he left us hanging for draft deals. Dick
Watch him say he is retiring on the weekend and then change his mind right before free agency opens

once again, this decision hangs on Hollands shoulders. Why would you give him until the 10th... why even float that date to him, when the draft is on the 7th and 8th.
you know what... just give Duncan our 1st round pick.

Sounds like Keith wants to retire a Hawk and they might trade him back to them to not get hammered by the recapture penalties.
What about Keith and Kassian to Hawks for a 5-7th rd type pick this year in the draft?
Helps both sides and makes cap sense for both teams at a very low price.
Might be something there if he is retiring.

I am not seeing how this helps the Hawks? They are on the hook for cap recapture if Keith retires, I believe so they'd get the penalty for that plus take on the Kassian and his 3.2 mill. What am I missing here?
I could be wrong but if Keith wants to retire and wants to do it as a Hawk, a trade is like Keith for future considerations. I'd think Keith retiring 100% favors the Oilers only so I wouldn't expect the Hawks to have to give the Oilers anything at all.

HA HA HA...giving credit to Holland on this? I don't think he deserves any. Fortunately those players just understood the clock was against them.

Sure what the hell. I like to be positive, life is way to short to dwell on the negative.
The Oilers took a gamble on Smith, they squeezed every last drop of juice he had left. Yes he had some hick ups and made my heart flutter at times with stress but generally he gave the Oilers pretty decent goaltending for what they paid him and helped them get to the conference finals. Then he decides he's "too hurt" to play anymore.
They felt they needed some vet help on the blueline but also to help McD and Leon take it to the next level. While not the norris dman he once was, Keith in my opinion gave the Oilers fairly solid defense. They needed a top 4 guy, he gave them top 4 mins and generally he was good. He was a plus player, I have heard numbers guys say his numbers were OK and when he was on the ice, the Oilers scored more than he gave up. I believe he helped mentor Bouchard as when he was finally paired with Bouchard, Bouchard took off. I also believe he helped McD and Leon take it to another level. I saw those 2 do things in the playoffs they weren't doing before and I don't mean points. He helped the Oilers get to the West final. They squeezed whatever juice he had left, squeezed some valuable knowledge from him and now he retires.
So my comment was a little tongue and cheek and I wasn't meaning to say "this was all Holland" but in my opinion at least, the gambles Holland took, worked. Call it luck if you want but in my opinion, the Oilers got what they wanted from those 2 and the are gone now. So I am pretty happy right now.

Will be fun to see how the league spins it so the Oilers don’t get the cap credit. We’ll probably need to compensate the Hawks a 2nd or something.
But seriously-the NHLPA did not get that money over the term of his deal. They need to be “made whole”

If I am a player I would be pissed at my PA if they don't raise a stink about it.

Word is Duncan Keith of the Edmonton Oilers has decided to retire. The 38-year-old has one year left on his deal at $5.54 million AAV.
Heck of a career, two-time Norris Trophy winner and Conn Smythe Trophy winner.
