Well, it's over.

The National Hockey League is adding advertisements to its jerseys for the 2022-23 season, the latest major U.S. sports league to sell marketing space on player uniforms during games.

The NHL board of governors unanimously voted to approve the ad policy, according to a memo emailed this week to all 32 teams. Clubs are now free to start negotiating with potential partners, according to the memo, which was reviewed by Sportico.

The ads must fit a rectangle 3 inches by 3.5 inches, making them slightly bigger than the patches that the NBA added to its jerseys for the 2017-18 season. Representatives from the NHL didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Even if there are no ads on the fan jerseys, I won't be buying jerseys anymore.

We all knew the day was inevitable, but it doesn't make it any less sad. I've collected jerseys since I was a kid and have always enjoyed the unique style that hockey jerseys have when compared to other sports. Being larger jerseys it always allowed for more design to be done. Extra patches on jerseys were interesting because they were always to commemorate or memorialize. Now this will be an added distraction on the jerseys, no matter how hard they try and fit it into the aesthetic. A Rogers logo or something will never look like it belongs on the jersey.

The Rogers logo won’t look like it belongs until one day, sooner than we want to believe where we won’t even notice the difference. I barely notice the adverts on the CFL jerseys.

I don't have a problem with it as long as the ads are small and don't over shadow the logo. European leagues have been doing it for years, time to get with the times.

100% agree with you. When they put the ad stickers on the helmets, I may have noticed them for a couple of games tops.

Some seem to fit pretty well, colour scheme and all. It would be nice if the Oil didn’t have a red primary coloured sponsor.

I totally forgot the CFL has them. Wild. I’m not against the league getting more revenue, just adds to the possibility we get to keep our stars with the cap going up

The colour of the logo should always be part of the discussions with prospecitive sponsors for me. Obviously I'm used to seeing sponsorship on jersey's being a fan of soccer and other sports where sponsorship is vital to keep the clubs running. Even beer league soccer teams have sponsors.

The logo should be altered to be in keeping with the jersey, so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. So I'd suggest teams don't work with Chevy, who refused to allow Man Utd to alter the logo from gold to white on the shirts for the last 6 years.

Maybe we will finally get that Gulf Oil sponsorship!

We need this. Any help for the cap to go up is a plus :) Especially after the Ceci buyout in a couple years.

This makes the Oilers less competitive. It's just another asset for the brain trust to squander will we watch other teams use what they have wisely.

"The Washington Capitals announced on Friday that the NHL team and Caesars Entertainment Inc. have agreed on a multi-year partnership that places the Caesars Sportsbook logo on Capitals home and third jerseys worn for home games beginning with the 2022-23 NHL season.

It is the first announced agreement in the NHL's Jersey Advertising Program.

I've just seen this, it's in a horrible position, would have prefered had they put it underneath the shoulder patch and above the number it would have looked better. Hopefully other teams have a look at better places to place the advertising.

This is so sad.

Used to say: It’s the logo on the front not the name on the back”. Now I guess say: “It’s the advertising space on the front, sucka”

First a single ad, then in a few years they look like those European ice hockey league Times Square replica jerseys. Is nothing sacred?

Watch Toronto get Air Canada for $500 million and Boston get TD Bank for $600 million, New York Rangers get Chase Manhattan for $1 Billion, Columbus get Jim Bob’s Columbus Fried Chicken for $60 thousand and Edmonton get Skyreach for a dozen 50% off coupons for rental of cherry-picker.

I’m not just unhappy, i’m also terribly hurt.

Good news for you. It can't be Skyreach, the company is long out of business!

The NHL had a set price for the helmet ads last year. I imagine this will be similar (and I expect the helmet ads are going to continue).

Of all the things that could happen, this isn't one I'm going to let impact my happiness. I might be less likely to buy a jersey - I'd love to see jersey sales boycotted if people really want to send the NHL a message about this - but it is what it is. This is a business and the NHL has to do what makes money for them. Especially given everything that happened over the last year, since the players probably took a larger share than normal of the hockey-related revenues, so some teams may be really struggling now.

I stopped buying tickets and merch years ago when I realized the problems weren't going away. Even though the season ticket waitlist proved to be a sham, I don't think it's made an impact on their thinking.

Of course sports isn't about sports anymore. It's a money making marketing vehicle. Such is life. This is apparently how we want things to be.

I could care less. Jerseys have had ads on them since I started watching hockey. Maska, CCM, Nike, Reebok, Adidas, etc.

People were angry when the boards got adverts, but they blend away over time. Now there ads on the ice and on the glass for television viewers. It does not detract from the game. Owner’s have a right to make money and consumers have the power to support the franchises. I suspect the additional jersey ads won’t mean a damn thing to the majority of fans and the one’s who do care are complaining over nothing as every product they own is an advertisement.

Any guesses who buys their way onto the Oilers jersey?

Rogers? Telus? ... outside chance of Shaw.

Can't think of any other companies out west with cash to throw away to get their name out there.
