Looks like he's way behind, but his linemate has a pretty good shot. I don't even know who the other kid is though...undrafted 23 year old with middling stats? There must be some grass roots campaign for the guy or something.

His linemate Brock Caufield has no shot, but his teammate Cole does. Cole gets the name recognition boost. Looks like no contest among his team.

Colin Bilek winning? Someone has an army of voters behind him gaming the poll.

I thought he and Cole Caufield were playing together? Just on PP?

Yeah I think just PP. Their coach has the lineup balanced with Holloway driving 1 line and Cole the other.

Can see the lesser Caufield is having the season of his life. 3 points in 31 games last year. 14 in 22 this year.

Should have put this here sooner, I’ve been voting daily for a bit now.

Don’t think he’s gonna win it, but no worries, he’ll sign with the big club and be on Leon’s left in a couple months. icon_wink

Always so hard to say with college kids. I could see him staying there for another year or two.

It's a shame that the NCAA has such strict rules on that - it would be nice to be able to pick him up for the end of the year, but then let him go back to school in the fall. Sadly, that's not an option. It's either/or.

Seems to me Holloway should be moved to make room for Savoie, a natural leftwinger. He gets us a second round pick easily with the season he's having.

Holloway in final 10 for Hobey Baker.

https://www.nhl.com/news/canadiens-prospect-cole-caufield-am ong-finalists-for-hobey-baker-award/c-322616848

"Dylan Holloway, F, Wisconsin: Holloway (6-1, 203) was an All-Big Ten First Team selection after he scored 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) in 22 games. The 19-year-old sophomore who was selected by the Oilers at No. 14 in the 2020 draft also scored three game-winning goals and is fourth among NCAA players with 16 power-play points (four goals, 12 assists)."

Next year Calder?

Amazing to think with all the players that have come through here that we have yet to win a Calder.

Gretzky won the WHA Lou Kaplan trophy for rookie of the year though.

There's no question several players through Edmonton deserve it. Always interesting to see how sportswriters tie themselves in knots to keep us from it.

Gretzky was punished for playing in the WHA and the NHL made a rule you couldn't be a rookie if you'd played pro in the WHA.

The next season Peter Stastny won despite several years playing pro in Europe. Jari Kurri at age 20 had a 75 point rookie season and didn't get a single vote. Darryl Sutter had 40 votes despite a 62 point season at age 22 (good for 4th place).

In 1981-82, Grant Fuhr tied for the league best in save percentage and had a 28-5-14 record. He finished second in Vezina voting behind Billy Smith and THIRD in Calder voting behind Dale Hawerchuk and Barry Pederson. Both had great seasons, so it was always going to be a tight race. The same year Coffey was the leading defenceman scorer at age 20 but finished third in Norris voting...so it's not just Calder where the Oilers got snubbed. I assume that everyone figured playing with Gretzky just inflated your numbers.

Jason Arnott lost by a whisker in 1993-94 - he had 195 votes to Martin Brodeur's 199. That's a tough one to argue. Brodeur was a great player who had a good season. Goalies do play a lot less games though - so one could argue I guess that it's hard to compare someone who plays a full season to someone who only played 47 games...More on that later.

2010-11 - Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle both looked alright early but both got injured, missed some time and then fell out of contention completely. Hall finished 9th in voting, Eberle was 15th. To be fair, the winner Jeff Skinner had significantly higher points per game than either of them, so again, hard to complain about this one.

But in the next season, Nugent-Hopkins had 52 points in 62 games and Gabriel Landeskog had 52 point in 82 games to tie for the rookie lead in points. Landeskog was given the Calder nonetheless, and it wasn't even close. He had 116 first place votes to Nuge's 26. Ridiculous.

In 2011-12, the Oilers had the highest scoring rookie forward in goals and points in Nail Yakupov. We also had the highest scoring rookie defenceman in Justin Schultz (who led rookie blueliners in goals, assists and points). The two combined for just 13 first place votes and finished 5th and 7th in Calder voting. Schultz, with 8-19-27 finished way behind Jonas Brodin (2-9-11) in the voting too - not even considered the best rookie defenceman!

And then of course 2015-16 where the league decided that there was a games played requirement for the Calder Trophy and that McDavid scoring over a point per game as a rookie was nice and all, but only good for a third place finish behind Panarin and Gostisbehere.

In short, we get no respect. Tikkanen should have won a Selke too.

That just tells you how little the NHL cares about the King Clancy Trophy. They can't even be bothered to screw Oilers out of it.

I'm looking at it as McDavid, Nuge and Yak paid the price for these three jokers winning an NHL award.

I like Caufield's chances better than Holloway's. Higher numbers.

Doesn't take anything away from Holloway - he had a great season - but it would be shocking if he won the Hobey Baker over his teammate.

Maybe next year (because I don't think he's turning pro yet).

Caulfield will be favoured to win, but remember Caufield played 30 games, Holloway 22 because of WJHC's, Holloway would have had similar numbers .. plus he's a year younger. Top ten in the NCAA in his first draft year is not bad.

I think Holloway turns pro, he's played 2 years in NCAA, best forward on the team.. Holland, Holloway, agent will talk.. they'll find best decision.. if he's not ready for the Oilers, then its a toss up whether the best place is Condors or Wisconsin.

The NCAA has pretty archaic rules, the player should be able to go to a NHL try out camp, see if he's ready, and not void his NCAA career.

The NCAA has pretty archaic rules, the player should be able to go to a NHL try out camp, see if he's ready, and not void his NCAA career.

I do think it's a stupid rule for player development, but I do think it is one that seems to convince players to come back longer than they might otherwise, at least in hockey. I don't think he's likely to be NHL ready, and I think for most college kids, they'd prefer another year in the NCAA to making only a little money in the AHL.

Not sure why any student athlete would want to leave to make minor league wages (other than it gets you to UFA a year sooner). Being the BMOC and having all expenses paid for plus you know someone is giving him some extra cash. An extra year protected from the reality of the real world where you can have all the fun you want.

If you have Apple devices it seems you can vote cell/wifi for each device and browser combination. ie I have 6 votes i so far with Safari/Firefox on each of cell and ipad, about to enter votes 7/8 from Safari-iPad. May even get more if you clear browser cache between, haven’t tried that yet. Haven’t tried Chrome votes yet so may get 10 in!
Nope, Chrome didn’t work, got 6 in though

Cole Caufield

Habs fans are gonna start piling in. Shane Pinto was 3rd on his team in points. Lame.

I admittedly know almost nothing about US college hockey, but I thought the Hobey Baker was pretty prestigious. If it's just voted on by fans how is it different than NHL all star voting? It's just a popularity contest. John Scott could win it.

No its not entirely voted on by fans, otherwise you're correct it would be pointless, like a Kardashian.
I think the fan vote counts for something, not well stated or defined, but the NCAA decides in the end by a selection committee.

It seems that as long as Holloway makes the final 3 in the so-called "Hobey Hat Trick", then the committee decides from there with no fan input.

from the website..
Quote:

NOMINATING AND SELECTION CRITERIA
There are four criteria against which nominees for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award are considered:

Strength of character, on and off the ice
Contribution to the integrity of the team and outstanding skills in all phases of the game
Scholastic achievement and sportsmanship
Compliance with all NCAA rules, including being a full-time student in an accredited college or university and completing 50 percent or more of the season
The selection process for the award is in three parts. First, the head coaches of NCAA Division I schools nominate the top three players in their league and the top three players in the nation. College hockey fans can also vote online at this time—and fan voting can be an important factor in the balloting outcome. Price Waterhouse Coopers tabulates the votes and the top 10 candidates are announced.

Voting then commences for the "Hobey Hat Trick," which is a narrowing of the field from ten players to three, from which the winner is selected. The primary voting in this part of the process is by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Selection Committee, a geographically balanced group of 29 individuals representing print and electronic sports media, college hockey coaches and officials, and NHL scouts. Fans may also vote online for their favorite candidate during this phase of the process.

After the three finalists for the award are announced ("Hobey Hat Trick"), the countdown begins toward the announcement of the award winner in a nationally televised ceremony..

That's Bilek!

I assume that they just gave him the Zemgus Girgensons treatment.
