Koski was horrid tonight, but he really didn't get much help on some of the goals...

Russell and Barrie looked rouggggghhhh.

The question is how often do these things happen and if that's an appropriate rate.

Here's his game log for the season
https://www.espn.com/nhl/player/gamelog/_/id/5268/mikko-kosk inen

He's played 12 games so far.
He's allowed 5+ goals in four of them.
He's been below .900 in save percentage in seven of them.

The Oilers are one of the highest scoring teams in the league, and they're a game below .500 on the season because we can't keep pucks out of the net.

That's good enough to win 2, lose 5, and have 5 toss ups. It's not good enough and entirely predictable.

Not like we deserve much better goaltending. Obviously this org has zero confidence in their ability to scout and trade for a goalie. Chia was the last guy that attempted this. Our only move is trying to sign a big name in the off-season. That'll never get you a truly elite goaltender. 99% of the time at least. Goalies that get the massive payday almost always disappoint. All the goalies that steal the show in the playoffs were drafted and developed by the team that brings them in at the right time.

Trading has been a successful route for the Oilers in the past too - Ranford, Joseph, Salo, Roloson all came in trades. You just have to be willing to give up something to make it happen.

We may be screwed on this one, hehe. We'll be looking for another Markstrom next off-season and probably strike out again anyways.

I haven't seen many stories on that state of our goalie scouting. I assume it's nonexistent.

That's ageist. If you'll take a 38 year old, I'm sure you can handle a 39 year old. Smith can come back again.

Naturally. You're dumping Koskinen and running with the Rinne/Smith tandem!

It would be one of the highest scoring goalie duos in history you know!

At least we know the Flames aren’t a Cup contending team even with Markstrom. How scary Edmonton would be with goaltending.

Markstrom would have been nice in oilers gear... koski has been absolute rubbish so far this season.

McDavid seemed a bit off today... still a hell of a game but anyone else notice how many time he bobbled the puck in this game.

Having a backup goalie you're not scared crapless to play is a good idea sometimes. Even just for the boost it gives the team.

Before the season is done they need to cut their loses on some players, Turris bye-bye, 3rd and 4th lines are brutal. Goalie is back up grade, dopey defense.

Bouchard stays in, get Bear back, bring up McLeod, or... tell Dylan Holloway to scrap uni and come back to start as #3 center, he'd play better than the 3 options we have now.
.. or put Holloway on McD's wing and drop RNH back to #3C

Holland has some work to do. The top guys have been incredible. They need some help.

I do like Bouchard. Not a great play on the Lucic goal (although his partner was a train wreck on that play as well) but man does he have a heavy shot. We haven't had a bomb like that since Souray left. I wish we had someone more reliable that we could pair him with.

I'd like to see Jones back in - I think he's better than Russell, Koekkoek or Lagesson. Lagesson seems fine, steady, but really nothing special to his game at all. I definitely wouldn't have sacrificed the back-up so we could have him in.

That slash call on Jussi was sooooo weak.

And of course they capitalize.

Ghost call.

Flames were doing the same thing a dozen times a shift.

The real shame is the Oilers are losing another year where they should be Cup contenders. Even worse, this is year they're playing only against five mediocre teams and Ottawa. This division should be a free run to the conference finals. But instead of trying to win it all, they go into the season with a defense that wasn't good enough to beat the #12 Blackhawks (minus their best defenseman) AND with a goalie they know isn't good enough to be a starter (why try for Markstrom, if you believe in Koskinen?).

So far, McDavid's career has been a waste.

Also - is there another team in the league who's so transparent about who they tried and failed to sign in free agency? I don't think it helps the team at all to have that information out there, but every single year you get the leak that the Oilers were right there on that guy as well...It's embarrassing.

This year it was absolutely necessary to ease people into the eventual throwing in the towel and signing Smith.

Koskinen - guy we tried to replace
Smith - guy we settled on as we watched the market dry up.

Just all oozes confidence and competence.

It's not like we don't have assets we could use in a trade. Caleb Jones had solid stats going in to this season, and the coach seems to have him ranked around #9 on the depth chart, so put him in play. Put any draft pick in the next couple of years in play. Samorukov likely can't pass enough guys on the depth chart to be a top four Oilers defenceman so dangle him too. McLeod, Savoie, Lavoie, even Holloway. We need to win now, so if it takes parting with some of the future to get a goalie, you have to get it done. The pitch you make to a team with two good goalies is that they can only play one of those at a time, but a guy like Jones could play regularly, plus we'll add sweeteners. We need a netminder.

McDavid with a goal and an assist. One of the things I like about being an Oiler fan is being able to cheer for individual statistics without worrying about team success.

Saw some weakness in Bouch's game tonight I think. He got lost quite a few times in his end. Not sure I like the pairing with Russell.

I don't see Russell as a guy that can cover a partner that well. He's not a guy that shuts down plays. He's a guy that is constantly in a defensive posture waiting for the other team to eventually take shots. Lots of cycles happen against Russell. He needs a partner that will play a large role in shutting them down, and also take the primary role moving the puck. He is actually the guy that needs help from a better D.

How about KooKoo & Bochard?

Maybe ..

Nurse Bear #1
Barrie (Lagesson/Larsson)
Bouchard KooKoo

Maybe put Turris on the wing.. should cause less damage than trying to play center, he doesn't have it to play center right now, too s l o w, maybe he was sittin' on the couch all off-season.
I still remember when Gretzky came to Burnaby to watch him play for the BCJHL Burnaby Express, made the news, the Coyotes pick him 3rd overall in 2007, guy had some promise.. while in Ottawa/Nashville just 3 seasons ago he looked pretty effective, he's really dropped off a cliff.

Putting Jones in there instead of Lagesson/Larsson likely gives you your Top-6.

Nurse / Bear
Jones / Barrie
Koekkoek / Bouchard

Don't know if Tippet has it in him to sit both Russell and Larsson though.

Yeah I guess I'm in the minority, I don't really see Jones being that exceptional, not great wheels, lacks the physicality required to break up cycles, gain position in front of the net, or retrieve pucks, but the worse thing is he doesn't appear to be very puck smart.. he consistently tries things his brother would do, but.. he's not his brother.

I think Nurse Bear are an ok combo, and that Bouchard and KooKoo are complimentary, but its the 3rd pair that I'd struggle with deciding, who'd do less damage? Maybe you keep Barrie for PP duty, then decide one of Larsson, Lagesson, KRussel.
