Best part is not only did the refs not call his blatant dive, but the Jets scored on the play. Had he actually worked hard to stay with Scheifele, that pass is never getting through and never going in the net. Just dumb by Tkurtle.

That Lames - Jets game was a men against boys. When the Lames don't have Brossoit scoring on himself, they had no chance. I just want to thank the lames for outbidding the Oilers for Markstrom. He was brought in to cover up for their issues, 2.94 GA and a .902%. Kneeordano -3 last night. Looks good on him. icon_biggrin

I generally don't see the point of having player interviews post-game, but that one may have made it all make sense to me.

What a ridiculously awkward interview. Any idea who it was who was trying to get him to answer about whether he dove without specifically accusing him of diving?

Fun NHL trivia.

Did you know this up and coming star goalie spent last offseason training with Oilers goalie coach Dustin Schwartz in an attempt to be extra prepared for this season?

Smith moved away from Schwartz last Fall and brought in his own guy

Crazy, Marleau is just 10 games away from tying Howe for the most games played record.

Howe would point out that he played several years in the WHA too - but even so, that's a pretty crazy feat. 22 games left in the year for the Sharks and he's dressed every night (even though his numbers are pretty awful - 2-4-6 so far.) Got to think that barring injury, he's going to finish the season (which is likely his last) as the all-time games played leader in the NHL.

Other interesting races here:

Marleau 50th in all-time points at 1194. Given his current pace, I don't think he can catch Dino Ciccarelli who's 49th with 1200. Ciccarelli was 1200 in 1232 games though...so probably under-rated really.

Joe Thornton is 6th in all-time games (1659) and probably won't ever make the top 5. He's 72 back of Ron Francis. However, he's 14th on the all-time points list (1521)and 10 back of Paul Coffey. He may make that close - but I think he's likely to fall short too. I don't expect Thornton to be back next year either, although stranger things have happened!

The other two active players in the top 50 all-time are Ovechkin (34th - 1308 pts) and Crosby (35th (1302 pts). Next up on their radar is Perreault with 1326, Pierre Turgeon with 1327, Mike Gartner with 1335 and Dave Andreychuk and Denis Savard with 1338 - Both should get close to that group this year.

The WHA is nice memory for us frozen people in Winnipeg and Edmonton, but it wasn't the NHL. Just like we aren't counting Jagr's goals and games in the K, I'm not counting selling tickets in Houston. Although he was a 1.25 ppg player in the WHA, which I did not know.

Crazy indeed.

Looking at their stats, it looks like Marleau has already eclipsed Howe if you count playoff games.

However, the #1 spot including playoff games goes to Mark Messier with 1992 contests played. Marleau sits second with 1952. Even if the Sharks went 7 games each series all the way to the cup this year, Marleau would have to play another year to eclipse this mark.

He must be glad he's not under Babcock anymore. Something about those milestones just gets the Babs wheels turning, figuring out ways how to stop them from happening :)

Wonder if Marleau signs another cheap deal next year. Sharks probably like having him around and he seems happy to go along.

Do they need him to be a mascot though? If he can't crack 15 points, does it make sense to have him there?

Maybe it doesn't matter in San Jose. It's kind of a retirement home there now anyhow, and they're likely to be bad for a few years now so bring him back to sell a few more jerseys...

That team is in a strange place now. High prices players on the decline (26M committed for 4+ more years each to D that are all gonna get worse every year now). High priced guys in the middle of their careers. Young guys poised to demand big money. Overall balancing out to just be a mediocre lineup. No goalie so the season is pretty hopeless from the get go. Yet having no goalie is still costing them 8M lol.

What the heck, may as well keep Marleau around for league minimum :) At least something to celebrate next season.

Sens up 4-2 in the 2nd.

You can dooooooo iiiiiiiiiit!!!

That would be awesome!

Hopefully Habs will wilt once they have to make up all their games in a compressed schedule, might be forced to play more back to backs then their original schedule had.

5-3 Sens now

Woot, Sens win. Our boy Tony Forsberg helping us out.

Game against Habs on Monday is super critical.

Once an Oiler .. Always an Oiler !! icon_nod

Ottawa handled Habs pretty well tonight, the combination of Speed and Size with some NHL skill is the formula. IMHO current Oiler Achilles heel is over all roster speed, and size.
You can have a few quick, skilled, smurfs on the roster and do well.. but not too many, and anyone with a lack of speed becomes ineffective, large or small.

Think that’s why they’ve seemingly had trouble with the Leafs and Habs this season.

But the media will tell you it’s bc they (we) lack a right handed centre who knows how to PK and is above average on the dot.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

And a 3rd if his faceoff % is 65% or better.

He will end up at 63.5%, but NHL will prorate that somehow to be >65% and give Detroit the pick.

Man I hope not.. Young players on ELCs will be the lifeblood of franchises to come in this flat cap era, especially if the covid mutations keep attendance low, can't be throwing out high picks for bottom 6 plugs anymore.. I think Yzerman owes Holland a make-up trade for the sucker bet on AA, 2 x 2nds for a rental that never performed.. just to clear his conscience :)

50 more games to get there...but so gritty. Look at those PIMS! I don't think you can overvalue his Dougie Gilmour-esque intangibles...

Maybe he'll get traded to the Leafs and really shine?

I think it shows that the Lames roster has some severe issues and they badly need to change things up. They are weak down the middle as they don't have a legit #1 center. They lack elite players and in my opinion you can't win without having a couple elite players and their defense has steadily gotten worse over the years. It took a step back when they traded Hamilton for Hanifin. It sure looks like it took another step back by letting Brodie go and they still rely heavily on Gio. He's going to be 38 in Oct and he is still their top minute dman.

I think it also shows that recycling old coaches isn't always a recipe for success. These guys have a shelf-life and what worked 15 years ago isn't necessarily going to work now.

I actually think the Flames roster has a lot of good components. Between Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm and Monahan, they have a lot of guys who can be point per game players. Gaudreau has topped out at 99 points, Monahan 82, Lindholm 78 and Tkachuk 77 and all that within the last three seasons. None of them are old.

The defence has absolutely eroded - Giordano is getting pretty long in the tooth and they underrated how good a couple of their guys (Hamilton, Brodie) were. That said, Andersson, Hanifin and Tanev aren't bad. They're all pretty serviceable.

I do think that things got worse for them after they fired Ward. The narrative that all they needed was a task master to drive them forward has turned out to be completely false. I love to see it. Always hated the Sutters almost as much as the Flames. Bunch of Islander and Flames rejects and the most over-hyped hockey family of all-time. It's great to watch Darryl Sutter fail.

You don't think the points you listed for Monahan, Lindholn, Gaudreau and Tkachuk were just career seasons? We've seen tons of players on all kinds of teams over the years have that 1 great season then never get close again.

I think this is a bad year for some of them but I don't see Gaudreau as a guy flirting with 100. I could see him has an 70's to 80'2 with the right center. Monahan had a lot of seasons around 60 pts prior to the 82. Where I see the biggest issue is Gio. They have been riding that guy big time for years and they aren't backing off. He was #1 in mins for them last game at almost 23 mins. So there doesn't seem to be a succession plan in place.

What do you expect him to do? Still stuck with the #1 thing wrong with the team. Johnny Hockey. Treliving had better get rid of that guy for anything. Addition by subtraction.

Sincerely,
Eric Francis
