Alex Chiasson, OT hero. I can live with that.

Well I was kinda wrong about them laying an egg. Praise be to Koski for that one!

Not really - I don’t think you were wrong. If not for Koskinen that would have been ugly before the end of the 1st. He was huge this game.

Yeah I agree. Oilers were being outshot 27-9 at one point. Dallas played very heavy on the body especially on Draisaitl. Glad that they managed to win, also glad they got to experience what will likely be the game plan of the opponents in the playoffs.

Again, suspect officiating for both sides. As a fan I get irate, I can't imagine what the players think.

Glass three quarters full you were kind right. They did lay an egg for most of the game but came away with 2 points.
Good teams find a way to win even when they play bad. They are winning me over that they are becoming a good team, might be over ripening at just the right time

Complete bush league officiating on both sides. Absolute garbage. I wish the would:

1) be consistent
2) stop “game managing” - if there is an infraction, call it. Don’t care if they’re already down 2 men and losing by 5.

I still don't understand how they decided that 2006 standard wasn't worth keeping. It was an incredibly entertaining year with scoring significantly up...and then the NHL decided that actually they DID want obstruction and interference allowed...

The only reason it happens as much as it does is because the league is so inconsistent about calling it. It must be really frustrating when you are one of the few people who do get called for tugging on someone's arm or blocking them from going in to the corner...

It’s a blurry line for me though.

I feel that was a trip (maybe) in the 1st period. In OT I don’t.

I guess you could say that’s inconsistent.

Retraction.

PVR told me it was much more of a scoring chance than I recalled.

Still a pretty weird game officiating wise.

As Oilers fans, we don’t have the luxury of feeling guilty over questionable calls that go the Oil way. My advice to you is to just enjoy it when it helps them win, especially when they are stuck in a tight playoff race... rock

I mentioned in the other thread that they probably didn't deserve that one - but on the flip side, I bet Flames fans are losing their damned minds right now, which is enjoyable to think about.

That was a legit goalie steal by Koskinen. We really haven't had that many of those this season.

I also lost count of how many penalties were called each way... seemed like someone was always on the kill.

They gave Chaisson first star * it was a great shot * but we all know it should have been Koski. Definite goalie steal with over 40 saves. Oilers looked flat and the stars were skating circles around them at times bit hey, a win is a win. Team looked tired. They'll be better next game.

Now the real test - can they beat the minnow in the Blackhawks? We did fall flat versus Anaheim not long ago...hopefully the team remembers the embarrassment of losing to Dallas Eakins...

To be fair, the Ducks are in the thick of the playoff race too, so they had quite a bit to play for when the Oil stumbled against them...

I'm not going to praise any individuals other than Koski, and I don't want to take away that he stole the game for us either. However, the whole team defence is working so well. The shots needed saving, but not many were AA grade scoring chances, and in part that was down to the way we got in the way and didn't let them have any space really. After years of watching us have not one or two, but way more moments in games where we leave players wide open, it's such a pleasure to watch us look so unlikely to let in soft goals.

I'm not sure in terms of the PK, but the Dallas commentary team stated that we'd have to allow to go 32 PP's without a goal to not be number 1 in the NHL. They highlighted that only 2 teams have ever gone through a season as number 1 on both PK and PP. Could we achieve that? I think so and what a turn around in performance that would be.

As for Koski, we all know he's overpaid, but after last season I was really worried with him in net, not so much this year. He stole that one for sure tonight and how he wasn't the first star I don't know, I was actually trying to think who would be the third star of the game as I felt both netminders were going to be 1 & 2.

Currently on pace to have the best PP% for a team since before the Oilers were in the NHL.

Why did Nurse get all that PP time yet again?

Oh well...two PP goals and way to steal win while super fatigued.

GWG by Chiasson was great but that PK end of regulation was what really saved the day...besides Koski in the first period....

The Dallas broadcast crew mentioned that the Oilers could go 0 for their next 38 on the PP and still be in first place in the league. That's crazy

Captain Obvious I know, but that's really the difference this year, the special teams. Blows me away that a team with McDavid and Draisaitl could be last in the league on the PP a few years ago. The bad PK of past years, fine, but the atrocious PP just never made sense to me.

THIS is more what I would expect.

I think it's possible that Todd McLellan is a really bad coach. At bare minimum, he's one of the most over-rated coaches of all-time.

Basically, anything that the coach had direct responsibility for was a weakness during his tenure here. We were bad at special teams, the player deployment was curious at best, and often seemed more based on who the coach liked than who should get a shot. His communication was horrendous. There seemed to be no serious attempt to gameplan for opponents, even in the playoffs, and he was badly outcoached in 2017 by...checking notes...Randy Carlyle!?!

It's amazing what a difference capable coaching can make - especially when you have good players for them to coach.

In retrospect, maybe I bought into the hype that Todd was the first decent coach, but the writing on the wall certainly showed he played favourites in what he felt would win us games, not how (as Adam puts it) who he should have played.

Tip, to his credit seems to be fairly even in how he treats his team, a few suspect defensive combos in my opinion but nothing that alarms me.

He also let's his associate / assistant coaches, coach.

The guys also talk to each other, guiding the younger guys how to do this and that, on the ice too, their jaws are always flapping. How long since you could see that? on the regular

It was a gutsy win last night, and they played with confidence as Koskinen I think shined last night (I was actually surprised to see this).

Well done game, and the team has a whole different feel to their game. They skate with purpose and skate like a team that should win.

Amazing turnaround.

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

Generally Disappointed.

Actually I believe Todd scapegoated jay woodcroft for the powerplay woes. Just think about how bad Eakins is, when Todd legitimately improved the team in spite of his own lack of coaching ability.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

No Cups

Here's an interesting stat:

The Russells (K + P) have combined for 97GP - 0G - 13A - 13 Pts this season.

Nurse + Drai have combined 4G - 6A - 10 Pts in the last 2 games.

Nurse + McDavid have combined for 1G - 9A - 10 Pts in the last 2 games.

So, no matter who you rank ahead this season (McDavid or Drai), our worst FW and worst D are roughly equal, pts wise, to the last 2 games of production from our second best D and our second best FW.

Boston's lowest producing FW and D (min 40 GP) are Chara and Nordstrom, who combine for 110GP - 9G - 11A - 20 Pts

That was one of the worst officiated game I have seen in awhile. I even saw Mark Spector tweet about how bad it was. If Spec says anything remotely bad about the officials, then you know it's real bad.

Dallas is a good team, with 2 excellent goalies who play a suffocating style. The Oilers didn't have their A game that's for sure but Koskinen sure did. He stole them the game. The Oilers won against Nash because of their offense. They won last night because of their goalie. The goalie is part of the team too so you need him to win you a few games when you don't have it.

Nuge with another goal, has 20 on the year. He probably won't beat last years career high of 28 and 69 pts but he will get close. I hope the debate about where Nuge should play is over. He's a really good top 6 winger and a average to below average top 6 center. His 2 best season, he's played a significant amount of time on the wing. Leave him there.

A win is a win in my books. Whether your team wins it by pumping in a ton of goals or your goalie steals it, they all count the same in the standings. Good win. Keep it going!

Amazing stat circulating on twitter on the top scorers (points per game) so far in 2020:

Quote:

NHL leaders in points per game since New Year’s Eve:

1) Draisaitl: 1.81
2) McDavid: 1.60
3) RNH: 1.46

That's pretty solid. Now - if the depth guys could just get their act together, we could win the division...

Maybe Anthony Stewart hasn't noticed who we have for goalies, or realized that Bettman, Parros and the rest will be telling referees to stop calling all penalties in the playoffs...

If Smith gets really hot during the playoffs and everyone on the Oilers D remains healthy, who knows how far they could go? This includes Klef returning to the line-up.

Here is a question, do people think this years roster is better than the 16-17 roster that got screwed out of the West finals?

16-17 the Oilers defense was:
Klef- Larsson
Sekera - Russell
Nurse - Benning

This year when healthy, their defense is probably
Klef-Larsson
Nurse - Bear
Jones/Russell - Green/Benning

I would argue that with more experience, more puck moving and a true left-right combos, this years defense is better than 16-17.

Forward wise, McDavid and Leon with more experience are clearly better than 16-17. I think Nuge is properly cast and is a better player now. I think Kassian is a better player now than he was. I think center wise, the 16-17 team had better bottom 6 centers but the Oilers are deeper on the wings with this team.

Goaltending, 16-17 Talbot was out of his mind that year so maybe there is a slight edge but they didn't have a back up in 16-17 and like I said, I think their defense overall is a lot better than 16-17.

So in my opinion with the emergence of Yamo, and the additions of Ennis and AA. Plus they have guys like Sheahan and Arch vs say Slep who wasn't ready back then and Caggulia. I think this teams Oilers is a mostly deeper forward group.

So overall, I think they are better than 16-17 team.

Big question mark is goaltending. Smith can go totally nuts, but at this point in his career? For a whole playoffs? Koskinen has had his share of playoff success, but in the KHL :) Let's just call him a wildcard :P

Weirder things have happened. Guys you don't expect have gone on crazy runs. Unfortunately, the eventual winners usually end up being goalies known to be very good, or some young home grown young talents that have been riding a high all year long and carried it into the playoffs.

The gamble we made this year is certainly not one I would bet big money on. I would have bet more on Talbot, but I guess we will see.
