Well at least we agree on it not being McLellan's fault. When it comes to Slep or any player, you can put blame on the coach for not playing a player, you can put blame on the coach for not playing a player enough and you can put blame on a coach for not putting him in a position to succeed. Putting him in a position to succeed could be anything from who he puts on the players line, what situations he puts him in or if he puts a player into a position he's not ready for. What a coach can't be blamed for in my opinion is effort.

I wrongly had high hopes for Slep. I like his combination of size, speed and big shot. When he was on, Slep while not a banger, used his size to his advantage. He could go into the corners and get pucks. He had the speed to get to the spots he needed to be and to get too pucks, at times he showed some flashes of offensive ability and he's got a good shot. The problem is he didn't bring it much. He didn't skate, he didn't use his size, he didn't use his shot, he was just out there taking up space. I still believe he has the skill set, the size and speed to be an effective top 9 forward the problem is he has to want to be that in the NHL and to do that, he has to bring when he plays. He doesn't bring it and that's 100% on him. Too bad.

How do you measure "wanting it" and "bringing it"?

He's producing at almost the same rate, despite playing hurt for a good portion of the season, and recovering from injury for another portion of the season.

What are you pointing to to back up the claim that he doesn't put in the effort? Have you rewatched game tape repeatedly to see how he's playing on each shift? Or is this just your impression from remembering the games he played, and the fact he's never blown your mind? He last played Jan. 6th. Do you remember anything about him that night? Who he played with? Whether he had any good chances? Do you remember the game the week before against Winnipeg? What did he do in that one? What game did he score in? Did he "want it" more in that game than he did on January 4th?

I think he's the same player, he's just A) played hurt and B) had to deal with unreasonable expectations from the world's worst hockey management group who thought because he scored a couple big goals in April (although producing points at the same rate as he always had), that he was now a second-line winger who could help make up for a terrible trade where they flushed a 50-60 point player for a downgrade at the same position.

According to a tweet by Mark Spector, Chia has sent out an email to all teams saying Slep is now available in trade. Get excited people!!! icon_lol

In all seriousness, I don't see a ton of teams lining up for Slep. I had big hopes for him that he would have a good year as I like his skill set but he hasn't been good.

That Slepyshev is available should have been obvious to 30 other NHL GMs. That no one has called on him should be painfully obvious what his interest is around the league right now. Moving Slepyshev doesn't bring in anything that will help the Oilers, and really which AHL player are you planning on replacing him with where you don't get a little worse?

I'm still skeptical about McLellan's relationship with Russian players (see pregame thread against Nashville), but where we are right now, I'd be shocked is Slepyshev doesn't sign in the KHL this off-season. Which is probably why the Oilers want to trade him and there is little market for him.

So it's McLellan's fault?

I saw a player who was given a tremendous opportunity last year and especially in the playoffs. So much so that I believe the organization made bets on him to be a regular contributor. He gets hurt in the offseason, misses some time. Then when he has come back and played, he has done exactly what? I'm asking because unless I missed something, I have watched a player who I personally had high hopes for do nothing. This team is DYING for a right winger to step up and when he has played, he's invisible. So what exactly are you seeing that is McLellan's fault because I am seeing a player who has pissed an opportunity away but doing nothing when he plays.

Totally agree.

Just hearing things. McKenzie says his gut feeling is both Chiarelli and McLellan stay. Friedman said a few weeks ago that he didn't think that they were looking at changes again.

Haven't heard anything about anyone being on the hotseat. Just sounds like more of the same.

Meanwhile, Lowe and co are all nicely cushioned from any sort of accountability. Even if Chia gets fired, that's all the media will write about. That will be enough to satisfy grumpy fans. Find a new GM and repeat the cycle all over again.

If the decisions is to keep McLellan as coach, not sure that is the right decisions but if that is what happens, no way they can bring back ANY of the assistants. Given how bad the special teams where, Johnson and Woodcroft need to go. I have no clue what Herbers does but if he had any involvement with the special teams, he needs to go. The only one that might have his job saved is the goalie coach. I am not sure how it works with the goalie coach and if the starter has a big involvement.

Guess Chia and McL got a get out of jail card for last year’s playoffs and cashed it in. Which fair enough because they did. But I agree special teams coaches gotta go.

Of course if they do axe Chia today, it'll be important to know whether they will look outside this dysfunctional organization or if they'll just hand the mantle to Howson or K. Gretzky or W. Gretzky or back to MacTavish...

Sounds like Ian Herbers may be returning to his old gig at the UofA.

Had a 3-year sabbatical approved, coinciding with his contract with the Oilers, which ends June 30th.

It'll come out some time this summer that Chiarelli was tasked with evaluating the UofA staff as well and figured they need Herbs back.

Stauffer has mentioned a few times about Johnson being removed from the PK and not being the best "communicator" for the group. So that is code for he is out. He mentioned a few times about Hebers maybe going back to the U of A so code for he's gone. He hasn't talked as much about Woodcoft but did talk about him a bit. My guess is he will be gone as well. If the team wants to keep McLellan, even though it won't be that popular, you can't keep him with ANY of the assistants are back and have a chance at selling it to anyone.

I'm not saying that the assistant coaches shouldn't be changed, and maybe the rumoured guys are fine... hard to imagine them as worse. This change is fully expected.

But it feels pretty meaningless and insignificant as long as the guy who makes the trades and signs the awful contracts is still free to create chaos and destruction. Shuffling chairs on the Titanic.

Maybe, just maybe Chia will finally learn :)

This team sucks out my passion I once had. It's almost debilitating the amount of apathy I have for this team. Chia wrecks the team, and I supported the Hall for Larsson trade, because I think Larsson is a heck of a defender, but yes yes a lot of people disagree with me and if I cared anymore about this team I'd think I would have the energy to stand up to the onslaught of naysayers saying I'm not thinking right.

I don't know, I see the playoffs and I remember last year and all that but overall this team and their lack of accountability has really zapped my passion. Not much to say but this post fits in the winds of change because I'm thinking my fandom for the Oilers is waning and for me that's a huge change.

I hope it's just indigestion. :)

The very definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing expecting different results.

You're not the only one. The Oilers organization has been a running joke in the NHL for virtually all of a two decade span. I'm starting to become more of a Golden Knights fan than anything else now.

There's something legitimately "fun" about that organization, unlike this ridiculous gong show that takes all the fun out of the game, has enough ego to sink one hundred Titanics, treats their fans like riff raff and has literally zero accountability.

Yah, now that I think about it, I'm kind of done with that nonsense.

GO KNIGHTS!!!

So, are we ready to have a sober discussion on how bad the city got screwed on the arena deal? Or do the new arena shills still have their head in the clouds hoping for billions from an imaginary property tax shell game that will somehow magically appear even after office buildings are valued at 1/4 of what they were 8 years ago?

So, are we ready to have a sober discussion on how bad the city got screwed on the arena deal? Or do the new arena shills still have their head in the clouds hoping for billions from an imaginary property tax shell game that will somehow magically appear even after office buildings are valued at 1/4 of what they were 8 years ago?

Katz' wife thought he was crazy to agree with the deal... so it must be good for Edmonton residents. Case closed. golf

2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!
