Sounds like a 3rd and a 5th.

Disappointed in the return, but happy for Hemmer.

Mac T math:

3rd plus 5th plus we take 50% of Hemmer's salary = 2nd

Ok.

Wish Hemmer well....

For me, this is the saddest departure of an Oiler since Doug Weight. Now Hemsky can move from favourite Oiler to one of my favourites in the NHL. I suppose in my world, a Kings - Senators final would be ideal to keep my interest in the playoffs going.

I wish Hemsky well... I like our team less now.
As for the return it seems about right. Was hoping for a 2nd but figured we wouldn't get that when Penner went for a 4th.

I feel for Hemmer. Oilers dont do right by him and ship him to a contender, they send him to a team that will likely miss the playoffs.

I don't get some of this. People still criticize Lowe for allowing emotions to influence trade deals, but when it comes to Hemsky, people are upset that not enough emotion was involved in the trade.

To me, the Oilers owe #83 nothing. Sure, he was here for a horrible stretch of hockey, but he is part of the reason for it. I hope that MacT took the best offer that was made and didn't take into consideration if the trading partner was going to be in the Cup finals or not.

I am along these lines as well. I think it's another example of a guy who was a victim of his overinflated contract.

and that's not my opinion - but fact as seen by the way the Oilers had to eat 50% of remaining contract just to trade him.

The Sens have an internal salary cap, so probably needed the Oilers to pick up a part of his salary to make the deal happen. I don't think every team would have demanded it. I'm just guessing that the better draft picks were worth the amount of extra money. Katz likes to show that he has deep pockets.

I'm now looking at this team minus Hemmer and thinking, who is my favourite Oiler now? I don't know if any of them is worthy of following Hemmer right now, no one has really done anything in Oilers colours to deserve that tag.

Very sad to see him go, but wish him all the best!
Another way of looking at this trade: we traded our 2014 5th and 2015 3rd round picks for Fasth, then recouped a 2014 5th and 2015 3rd for Hemsky.
So essentially it's Fasth for Hemsky (although the picks will end up being a little different), so in a sense we actually got an NHL body for Hemsky.

Hemsky is going to look real good playing with Spezza and Michalek. Hoping they can put together a run and that I can cheer them in the playoffs. Wish they would have traded him to Pittsburgh, but Ottawa is an easy team to cheer for in the Eastern Conference.

Agreed that this is the toughest Oilers trade since Doug Weight.

And I no longer have a favourite Oiler. This is a fairly unlikable group of losers right now.

My fave Oiler is gone.

Boy has the market softened, remember the first and a prospect for Penner?
He went for a 5th this year.

I think the return was the best that could be hoped for, surprised Hemsky went earlier rather than later....although some of the other names out there would have involved roster players going the other way.

Although I've been pretty critical of him at different points in his career, Hemsky is one of the very few ex Oilers that I will hope success after leaving. He endured very little help in terms of protection and support for most of his tenure here and I hope he finds a good home in Ottawa, where he'll probably play at least initially with Spezza.

Yeah, keep right on stockpiling those picks because that's what the Oil need- more prospects rather than real NHL-ers. I've said it before and I'll probably say it many more times after: this dumpster of a season can't end soon enough.

I don't understand this sentiment, the options were let him go for noting or get some picks. Nobody was going to give players for a Hemsky rental so why complain?

I was making a general comment about the overall season and not specifically about Hemmer going for picks. I knew that the Oil weren't going to get much for him, I'm just bitter at the state of this team sinking to the point where its players can only get picks in return.

Team sucks. Management is terrible. Coaching makes management look good in comparison (other than the fact they hired the coach). Players are lazy, unlikeable and don't even seem to like each other. Long-time loyal players who contribute are fed to media trolls for lunch to the point where they're ecstatic to leave town. We get literally next to NOTHING for good players when they leave. We are perpetually in the running for only one prize every year - the first overall draft pick so we can squander another talented youngster.

I feel empty. This year is awful for hockey and the Oilers are the worst run team in the league.

What a joke.

Man has your tune changed bud. The 6 Ring Circus finally got to you huh?

I find the new Adam much more entertaining. He has some great zingers about this organization.

Angry Adam rules.

6 Ring Circus...I like that. Where's Tarkus? That's OFPOD material.

This is the lowest point for me with the team in my entire Oilers fandom, which is to say my entire life. It's worse than the Gretzky trade or the sell-off of all the stars in the 90s - maybe because I was younger and naive back then and full of hope, maybe because time has made it seem less bad.

Lowe and his crew have driven this in to the ground. The team is a laughing stock, and they shoot themselves in the foot. People are making fun of Burke for not trading Cammalleri today, but I get it...if other teams want one of your best players for peanuts and won't pay more, then tell them to pound sand. What's another late draft pick likely to do for us? Especially with a draft record that shows that the most successful late round pick since we were last in the playoffs was Linus Omark in the fourth round.

MacTavish is addicted to saying too much to the media. He makes sure everyone knows Hemsky is persona non grata last summer, and is unable to get enough to make it worth his while to trade him (I wonder if there were offers better than the one he got today). Between that, and the circus that went on this week with the press basically asking him how it felt to be leaving days before he was traded, the other teams knew it was unlikely to end in a last minute signing here. He then decides to go to the press (while all the other GMs know who he's shopping) and says he really wants to replace the 2nd, 3rd and 4th pick we've traded away - setting a ceiling for what they're likely to offer for Hemsky (or Schultz for that matter).

He's got no back-up plan now...he's forced to just take the best thing on the table, which, as it happens, was essentially next to nothing.

Burke at least can say with a straight face that he would rather not weaken his team the rest of the way for the sake of a late round draft pick or two, and that 6 weeks of Cammalleri and a little higher morale in the room mean more to him. MacTavish really couldn't say that though, because the gong show has been going on so long that it probably doesn't help morale to have Hemsky here after the media gave him a week of exit interviews.

I definitely am sick of incompetence here, and it's embarrassing that the team has managed to get someone equally in competent in to so many roles in management. The shocking thing is trying to imagine how someone actually goes about cleaning up even if Katz finally cleans house. At minimum, to doit properly, you probably need to replace Lowe, Howson, MacTavish, Eakins, MacGregor, the pro scouting staff, the amateur scouting staff and all the assistant coaches. Where do you even start rebuilding that?

This is what gets me to. Why on earth would you announce prior to the deadline what you think the value of your available players is?? Or exactly what it is that you are hoping to accomplish at the deadline?? I cant wrap my head around why anyone would think this is a good idea.

So you make it known to the entire world that you think Hemsky is worth a second round pick...Do you actually think anyone will offer you what you think he is worth?? They are in competition with you!! Id say the odds are pretty good that if you say you think he is worth a second that the bidding starts with a third. Not to mention that you have stated on the record that all you want is mid round draft picks so no one will even consider offering anything more than that. You don’t really need a business degree to figure this stuff out.

How about just keeping your yap shut or even making the odd comment here and there about how valuable your players are and how you will listen to offers but the priority is to resign him so he can help your team (weather its true or not).

Your point about the way Burke handled a similar situation is bang on.

It was interesting hearing MacTavish talk about his "openness" yesterday in the raw interview. It's like he really believes he owes the media an explanation for what he is doing.

I like that he is open with his players. I don't like that he is open with the media and fans.

He doesn't owe that to them. In fact, he shouldn't. He should give media availability, but he doesn't need to go into details about what he is doing or trying to do. Even Mike Gillis recognizes this. It's harmful to his organization with very little benefit (other than pacifying the entitled media in this city).
