I agree!! This isn't kids hockey where everyone gets a ribbon, it's pro hockey and the point is to win. So if you win, you get rewarded, if you lose, you get nothing. The fact that the winning team in OT gets only 1 more point than the loser is a joke.

|
You are probably right. McD will probably score way more than 50 goals. Probably win the scoring race by 15+, he's already got an 8 pt lead now but his story won't be cool enough. It's McD, he's supposed to do that.
I looked at the standings today and it reminded me how much I HATE the loser point. You take the game to OT but lose it so here is a consolation point. It will never happen but I would love it if a team had more OT losses than wins but made the playoffs thanks to the loser point just to show the NHL how stupid it is. Go something like 32-14-36 which is 100 points and make the playoffs while losing 50 games.
|
Possible that mcdavid isn't seeing another Hart unless he wins the rocket now.

So red wings almost a 2:1 record. 3 years for Yzerman to clean up most of Holland's mess. Not done of course. Still waiting on his ringer goalie to develop. This while Holland just built a new mess on top of Chia's

Has Dan Vladar taken the starter's job in Calgary? Is Marky Markstrom done?

Flames fans must be bewildered that the "trash team" the Little Johnny left them for beat them tonight. All I heard all summer was that Johnny left multiple cups on the table to join a team that has no chance of winning ever.

I have to say the NHL scheduler really did a lousy job. Oilers play Minnie and Nash back to back Monday & Tuesday. Fly back home for 2, then go back to Nashville then Dallas. Making them fly back and forth like this is ridiculous.

In addition, our games against MIN are "back-to-back", while MIN had an in-between game against (I think) Vancouver. Strange scheduling at best. There are always these kinds of oddities, and far worse (in my estimation) for the western half of the league.

The Western Conference and in particular the Pacific division get it the worst. I think the Canucks normally have the most air miles every year.

I think it's becoming less and less an issue every year. Comfy recliner in a coach to take you right on to tarmac at airport, Comfy recliner on fully catered private jet, comfy recliner on coach to 5-star hotel ......

And the fLames pick up yet another loser point. IIRC they did this last year too. Feels like 1/3 of their pts were due to OTLs. Yet their fans will continue to whine about the Oilers resorting to the 3v3 OT "skills contest" in order to win any games.

Blame it on the greedy older players who refused to take a pay cut for one year. Players 3 and 4 years later still paying the price for that greed.

When I lived in Phoenix I would go to Oilers games for about $20-25 a ticket (this was only about 5 years ago). Oilers games there would have about 50% Oilers fans in the stands and you'd get some good Let's Go Oilers chants going. I was standing in line at one of the games chatting with another person in an Oilers jersey he he was telling me that it was cheaper for him to fly down to Phoenix and go to the game than it was for him to go to the game in Edmonton. I realized then that I will probably never go to another game in Edmonton (went to one game in 2009), since to get there is already a big cost, and the tickets are insane on top of that. If I ever want to see a BOA I would probably go to Calgary since the price to get there and the tickets are themselves are cheaper.
Now I live in an ECHL market, so it's pretty unlikely I will go to any NHL games any time soon, but those Panthers prices might be tempting if I take a trip to Florida someday.

According to ESPN, the league is looking at expanding to an 84 game season. Reportedly the reason to do it is to make the schedule equal at least within the division.
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/35265273/sources-nhl-con sidering-84-game-regular-season-schedule
84 game schedule would be:
2 games vs each team in other conference - 2*16 = 32
3 games vs each team in other division in conference 3*8 = 24
4 games vs each team in division = 4*7 = 28
32 +24 + 28 = 84
My preference would be an 83 game season with only two games vs each team in other division in conference and five games vs each division opponent. That would help regional rivalries.

Saw that gagner would be #6 in points among Oilers forwards (5 right now with Kane out). What are we even doing with this team?

I think it's the Oilers' horrible management creating a situation where coaches are forced to over rely on the stars and depth players continually perform poorly because of a self fulfilling prophecy. I don't think Gagner would be 5th in scoring if he signed with the Oilers.

Was going to comment the same, he likely wouldn't be here. But, why not? He is playing around 12 mins a game with mediocre players and 2nd pp unit. Lots of guys do that here. Why does the reliance on a few guys mean everyone else has to be trash? We got away from that for a little while last year. Now it's like McLellan and tippett never left.
There is something in the water here for sure. But it is of our doing. Oilers have the plumbing set up so the toilet water goes straight back up the faucets.

The stars eat up all the prime opportunities because the tipping point between a win a loss is so fine. The coach simply can’t waste Cherry time getting the other players going.

I think we have played McDrai against the best forwards and D for a long time. So much lower end competition for our depth guys to play against. Don't think Gagner is getting any better opportunity to try to create offense in Winnipeg than he would be getting here

It's the biggest question - how come no depth player can be successful here?
It's been several years now of the same thing with different coaches. They play the wheels off the big guys and no one else pisses a drop of offence, and usually the depth gets outscored so badly that the big guys gains are almost all wiped out.
Some systems maybe, some risk avoidance with all the depth players. Personnel is definitely an issue - we tend to prefer to always have a Shore or Malone in the lineup, which just is dead weight. But I tend to think some of it is still the same have and have-not culture that the team has instilled since the Hall draft. They believe in core and non-core team members, and the interchangeable non-core guys don't feel the same level of responsibility to team success. I think there's likely some level of lack of inclusivity for some of the guys around the edges too.
The team has failed to build a winning culture for so long, is it really any wonder at this point? They have no idea how to do so.

Just saw that Crosby and OV both have 1452 regular season points (Crosby in less games). Impressive career rivalry.
Mcdavid will likely always leave Matthews way back in the dust in points. Has 50% more in 20% more games played

I was scanning through tonight’s scoresheets and was looking at how impressive Rantenen’s number and then I realized he was one back of the Nuge this season.
I often forget how unbelievable the offence this top 6 possesses and I guess that’s why us fans get super down when we are struggling.

Once again the Flames get a team the Oilers played to night before, playing their backup (admittedly Varlamov is a pretty good #2). Just working the Isles over through the first period.
