You don't have to be happy with how things have gone for the Oilers during his time as owner but making fun of a person looks is pretty low class in my opinion. It's disappointing that some Oilers fans felt compelled to do that.

He had a combination of extra tanned skin, new veneers, and a “new” nose. It was shocking to begin with, I honestly thought people had photoshopped the pictures. I thought you mixed Katz & Kirk Douglas, not even kidding.

I think what makes it believable is also the fact that he’s very wealthy, middle aged, and plastic surgery mistakes are not uncommon. Serves me right for assuming but this franchise is anything but transparent.

The Oilers definitely could have avoided a whole lot of talk on this by letting it be known ahead of this appearance what was happening with their owner. It was always going to be shocking, and he's not exactly a normal dude, so it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that he'd decided to make some bad decisions...

Bummer for Katz, but not sure people still need to feel that bad. 99.9% chance the infection was a result from bad habits. It's in the category like a guy that gets pissed drunk and loses a foot after driving his car into a wall.

You are being a complete D!ck!!!!

My own brother has had 4 surgeries on his nose, transplants from other parts of his body to replace half of his nose due to a form of skin cancer that presents internally. All because he had the nerve to exist and go out in the sun. It looks very much like Katz’ but more expanded than contracted.

Be jealous of his money if you must, but try to still be a human being.

SOrry to hear about your brother. I have skin cancer in my immediate family as well, although it was caught early thankfully.

I no doubt went too far in my comments, but I still don't think it's unreasonable to consider the possibility that this came about because of drug use. This has been speculated and joked about with Katz since...well forever, especially since he owned the OIlers. It's a known part of Oilers OBC history. ANd it can be very damaging to your immune system.

Sucks regardless, but only suggesting this may not simply be a case of genetic misfortune or purely bad luck. We'll probably never really know, so I guess I will just be stuck wearing the dick crown for this thread

Whatever, I won't comment further on Katz' looks (my post on the subject was more of a shocked question anyway given how different he looked), but that doesn't for a second excuse the damning lack of success the Oil have had during his tenure as owner.

I’m relieved to know that something terrible was occurring, and that was what was affecting Katz’s decision making. The way he was running his business seemed like insanity, now we know it probably was, or something to that effect. Dude is struggling with something major, whether initially self-inflected or not - it’s way past his control now. He’s grasping at straws and hanging on to everyone close to him, you could say, he’s hanging on like it’s his final days. Everything he’s doing is highly personal and not business like. It may not be excusable, but at least it’s understandable.

We know where we stand now. We are fans of a hockey team that is owned by a dying man. He is doing what he wants with his team, and is going to use it for his enjoyment, because he’d rather lose games than lose those closest to him before he dies. Those people are probably helping him stay sane, and help him enjoy or at least cope with what looks like a personal hell. I don’t blame him. I just hope his coping doesn’t ruin anything permanently.

I imagine that once he’s better, if he gets better, he’ll be willing to rid the team of what ails it and he’ll return to being the shrew business man he once was. Until then, we know what we have.

We can chose to lump it, because it probably won’t get better until he does, or we can choose to take a break.

At least the picture is more clear. I feel sorry for Daryl - but that’s not why I’m more content, or less angry about team and staff management. I’m more content, because I’m less confused. Things fit now.

I’m considering this a non-operational time frame for the Oilers. I expect the team to continue to be run as it has been, and as long as I know that’s probably the case, I’m okay following the team. One thing I want, is to not be told that the team is being run in an as-effective-as-possible way. Outside of that, I’m not angry anymore.

You know that all of what you said is just speculation, right? I mean, if it helps you cope with how poorly this team has been run for most of the past 13 years, then more power to you. I'm going to remain skeptical about anything Katz and the rest of the Oil management team do until I see actual results (good results).

Naw, I get where you're coming from completely. I'm over the line into dick territory in the thread, commenting based on what could be a totally unfair assumption for what serves very little purpose aside from possibly a lame don't do drugs message. I have little personal bias about people having health problems as a result of treating their bodies like crap, an aunt and uncle who probably have each costed the health care system 50 times more than they ever paid in taxes, but continue to go about their crappy ways trashing themselves more and more. But, this is kind of a dumb place for me to come out and try to apply that line of thinking.

In any case, it does look like Katz is on the tail end of his treatments, and likely past the hard part. Hopefully he fully recovers, and if it was a result of some bad habits, can only hope that finishes as well.

You don't have to be happy with how things have gone for the Oilers during his time as owner but making fun of a person looks is pretty low class in my opinion. It's disappointing that some Oilers fans felt compelled to do that.

Do you talk openly about every single issue with your personal life especially your health with complete strangers? I don't. I understand he's a much higher profile person than any of us but he's still a person. He doesn't deserve to be mocked for no reason.

Long ago, during my university years, I worked at Safeway. One day, I took a slapshot off the face in a hockey game, costing me two teeth and garnering 50 stitches as my lip was sliced clean through.

When I went back to work, I found myself explaining, often proactively, why my face looked like it did - because it was pretty much impossible not to do so.

I am going to drop out of this discussion. I am not OK having to discuss why it's not acceptable in society to mock people about their appearance especially when it involves a person fighting to live. I think there is something morally wrong with that. Mock me if you must.

I don't think anyone is mocking you here. I wouldn't really consider my comments mocking at all...I just think the Oilers could have done their boss a favour and divulged information on his shocking appearance ahead of him strolling out for the press conference.

I didn’t see Katz or the press conference, but if I were running a potentially difficult difficult PR situation I’d sure leave a distraction like that floating around to use as a narrative control device.

Of course I’m pretty cynical, so I’m sure it was all coincidental that the conversation changed the way it did.

My initial thought to Shannon's tweet was that his health situation either isn't true or is exaggerated. For as leaky as the Oilers are, how did it not get out that he was carrying around an IV bag 24/7 during the playoffs?

I don't know, I just wouldn't be surprised if this was either a planned distraction as Pi said or the Oilers stretching the truth because of the very poor reaction to his appearance today.

Besides, forget the nose. He can compete with Brian Burke for the weirdest hair in hockey.

Yeah this is all kinda weird. Although, it does make me ponder who I would feel worse for, a guy messed up by getting a nose job, or a guy that gets messed up from loads of nose candy. I do hope both would get better and not die from it obviously, but I might actually feel worse for the nose job guy.

I really hope this wasn't a planned distraction, but regardless, it has turned out well regardless. Oilers org negativity is unable to take on any life today.

Can probably get it lots of ways. But, inflammation and infection is pretty common with abusers. And ending up with some bad infections that can no longer be killed off with antibiotics usually requires a long investment of time in wrecking your nose. Prolonged cocaine use can really mess up your immune system and made you very vulnerable to infections.

Obviously I can be totally off base here, just taking an educated guess, along with the timing of this starting after his move down to join the hollywood ranks, and I should obviously stop. I'm sure the full story of Katz's life threatening infection will never be hitting the news wire.

Do hope he gets better, sounds like he's almost done surgeries. And it did take some balls for him to come out today, and he clearly shows he wants to win, even if he has trusted fools for far too long in trying to achieve that goal.

Sinus infections are common, and generally hard to treat, never mind dealing with antibiotic resistant bacteria, that combo could easily be fatal.

So now we are supposed to feel sorry for DK?? Do I have this right?

What a hero he was to drag his colostomy bag up to the podium and speak directly to the lowly masses!

In fact I'm so inspired by his battle that I am going to renew my season tickets and buy an Oilers jersey!

Anyway, whatever the motivation I don't think there is any doubt who is the face of the Oilers franchise.

He has my sympathies, but the Oilers aren't getting anymore of my money or viewing time unless they fix the team. Nor does it alleviate any criticism of the organization.

I think 95% of the frustration I've seen has been directed at the Oilers organization and management, not Katz himself. His aloof nature has kept him out of most of the line of fire. Other than keeping the OBC employed.

Do you talk openly about every single issue with your personal life especially your health with complete strangers? I don't. I understand he's a much higher profile person than any of us, he's still a person.

Yeah they had to know there would be questions regarding the owner's shocking change of appearance. Just someone grab a clue, and head it off with a release for the media....but no....

I totally assumed it was a bad nose job, and thought there were circulatory issues as well by the looks of it. Would not be out of the realm of possibility. Who knows what caused it, hope he recovers.

I mean how could one not notice? Yeah, I thought it was a bit odd that the way we learned of this was during a pivotal moment in the Oilers future.

If he didn’t want it public, but felt compelled to speak to the press/fans, it could have easily been done over phone during the presser, with a picture of the Katz face we remember in the corner of the screen while he spoke.

Not sure if there was any motive behind the timeline, but anyone who doesn’t find it a bit odd isn’t being honest at all. It’s pretty huge news in itself. Why mash it together with a poho/gm signing? Sorry, “because Oilers” doesn’t answer my question on this one.

You don't have to be happy with how things have gone for the Oilers during his time as owner but making fun of a person looks is pretty low class in my opinion. It's disappointing that some Oilers fans felt compelled to do that.

Worth noting is that the issue isn't really what Nicholson if framing here. He's suggesting there's no issue because ultimately, they say to the GM that he can do what he chooses. The problem is that there's too many voices in the room, especially voices that have been shown to be so incompetent and useless that they shouldn't be there at all.

Those voices also have direct access to the boss, potentially moreso than this GM or the last one did...in fact - it's clear in this that Nicholson interview intends to be the conduit from Holland to Katz.

When you can be undermined by so many incompetents who think you should be doing whatever idiotic thing they suggest, that's a bad situation.

The massive amount of people in the room is a further problem when you consider that Lowe and MacT among others are tremendously bad leakers and have no sense of strategy with their leaks beyond keeping the scribes happy so they don't write bad things about them...These aren't people you want anywhere near the operations of your hockey team and yet, there they still are!

It would be really nice if one of the Super-Friends got dismissed, but I don't think anyone should hold their hope for even that.

Sorry, I didn’t get the memo. I didn’t know I wan no longer allowed to comment on someone’s obvious decline in health. Am I allowed to notice these things or is that a thought crime? Follow up question, am I allowed to notice a player’s health? Like if a guy obviously has a bad knee can I say his skating is suffering or can we only have nice thoughts about people?

Follow up question, am I allowed to notice a player’s health? Like if a guy obviously has a bad knee can I say his skating is suffering or can we only have nice thoughts about people?

I reserve my right to continue to dislike someone i previously disliked even if they are sick.

I don’t think that’s allowed. Sorry man, you can only politely pretend not to notice. I think. Clutch, we’re trying to learn here, what are we allowed to do?

This is fine.
