Not much to work with if I am Hall.
|
The story of his career. I hope he finds some place in the summer that can string together some wins so he can build some sort of legacy outside of a single round of playoffs.
|
I expect that Hall isn't simply looking to maximize his earning potential next summer...he's going to go to a team where he can play with some other great players.
I do wonder if a wholesale change at the top here might make Edmonton an attractive place to choose...
|
That's not happening...
Before Chia was hired, the idea was being spread from this org that Hall was not who they expected him to be in terms of team culture. He's not blind...I don't think there is any way he would come back here.
|
You may have missed the bolded. I agree, as things are, no chance he considers it. But clearing out all of the OBC? Certainly wouldn't hurt the top 6.

Lowe and MacT are gonna stay no matter what. If MacT has to be promoted to the "business side" to appease fan perception, that's what it will take. And Hall isn't gonna come here and play under those guys.

I think he'd need to see a full house-cleaning. Those...so-and-sos that run this team did the same thing to Hall that they've done over and over since Comrie left...they ran him down on any number of fronts, mostly anonymously just to get the media guys sharing whispers about the player.
I think that Comrie, and the ridiculousness around that holdout and trade taught Lowe that the management can stay the good guys in the eyes of many (most?) fans, simply by insinuating the player wasn't good for the team - no matter what they did here. Looking in the rearview mirror, what Lowe did there was ridiculous. They held a player for ransom asking for him to pay back in full moneys he would have been taxed on. And in the process, blew up a deal that would have seen us get Corey Perry and the 9th overall pick for one where they ended up with Jeff Woywitka and the 25th overall pick. Insanity.
And yet we all booed Comrie lustily when he came back wearing another team's colours. The team created some rumours - he only cared about the money, he wasn't a playoff performer, etc. and allowed other more salacious rumours to fester and grow. No one was mad at Lowe for a deal where he not only got no immediate help for a player one year removed from leading the team in scoring, but they weren't even mad that he intentionally downgraded the return out of spite!
At almost the same time, Lowe and MacTavish sniped in the media about Todd Marchant - he was too big for his britches, he has a good year and doesn't know his role, etc. as they watched him sail off in to the sunset as a free agent. Again, fans were more upset with Marchant than they were with the Oilers for not being able to re-sign one of their best players.
I think that Lowe compared that to the frustration Oilers fans felt around the Weight and Guerin deals, and decided it was much easier to slag guys and deflect blame, and so we've been seeing it ever since.
Hall was just one of the most recent to get the treatment...FWIW, I think they were even starting to do it last year on Klefbom too, before his surgery removed the threat of them trading him for peanuts...but if you took those cancers out of the organization, maybe there wouldn't be an issue with him coming back? Surely, he must understand as well as anyone how they turn on people - I mean, this is the guy they shoved in front of TV cameras to give the Stockholm Syndrome interview supporting Dallas Eakins a month before they canned him and started having Stauffer rip him daily...

I would say it started pre-Comrie with the TRAITOR they branded on Paul Coffey when he wanted fair pay for being the best D in the league. Break up the Cup-winning Oilers' brotherhood for filthy lucre??? And then Pocklington cashed out on Gretzky and we all saw the leopard's spots.
Been saying it for decades: as long as anyone associated with the OBC/Glory Years-era has anything to do with the Oilers in any capacity, the curse of the Puck will remain. Will we break 86 years between championships?

Hall is a completely different player though. The Hall the Oilers traded is not the Hall that is on the Devils. It's not close. He definitely changed his game and matured big time after the trade. Doesn't justify the trade because the return for him wasn't enough but I don't know if he changes or matures without the trade.

I am not looking to get into another complaint session about all the contracts that suck on the Oilers. I know which ones blow and the problems they create.
Realistically, what does Hall get on the open market? It has to be at least 10 mill right? So my question is with McDavid and Leon already signed to 21 mill combined, doesn't matter if some think Leon makes 1 mill too much, can any team have 3 guys making a combined 30-31 mill and be successful? That would be like almost 40% of your cap spent on 3 guys. I really question if you can having that much money tied up in 3 guys.
When Marner signs his deal which if he gets less than 10, he should fire his agent, I really wonder how the leafs will be with Matthews, Tavares and Marner making well past 30 mill combined.

Yes - you can have three guys making that much - if they're the right guys. If you have 300 points between the three of them. I mean, you are going to want your GM to really sell hard to them not to max out their dollars, but it could be really successful. Maybe you even tell the last man in to take a short deal - so he still has flexibility to go get paid after it's done.
We've seen other teams spend similarly on a percentage basis - Kane/Toews/Hossa, Heatley/Thorton/Marleau, Crosby/Malkin/Kessel...and it can be a recipe for success. Get superstars whenever you can. Find cost savings down your lineup to make it happen.

True but none of those guys are making 30-31 mill. Crosby, Malkin Kessel make 25 combined. That's an extra 5-6 mill less. That's 1 or 2 good players difference.

Crosby Letang Malkin made up 35.6% of the cap when Pittsburgh won their second cup in 2015/16.
The equivalent of that with a predicted 82M cap next year is 29.2M.
Great players are worth paying for and it's a good problem to have.

Ding Ding!
I just was about to post this same thing.
RDOF likes to twist facts and ignore reality so comparing contracts signed even a couple years back to ones coming up is not apples to apples.
Many of the cup winners in the cap era is top heavy on star salaries and fill in the weak spots with low paid role players.
The Oilers collect bottom sixers and 3rd pairing D like they are a hot commodity. If you have a shot at a star player for market value in comparison to todays cap you take it. As time passes the contract is "better" in the sense that it will be a smaller percentage each year.
I am not saying Hall should be a target or that he would come back but if the Oilers have a crack at a legit star player and it means 30 mill tied up in three players that shouldnt be a hold up.

The Oilers roster isn't that great for McDavid but they at least have a bunch of good pieces along with him to work with and if a savy GM can move a piece or 2 out and add in a few players, they could easily be alright next season. Hall's a UFA at the end of next season and I look their roster and there is a whole pile of nothing. At center they have Hischeir who is probably going to be decent but I don't see him as high end then their next best center is 33 yr old Zajac. Basically Horcoff 2.0. Their starting goalie is going to be 33 and hasn't been good in 3 years. Their best dman is probably Greene and he's 36.
Not much to work with if I am Hall.

He would be nuts to sign an extension there if he ever wants to win. Imagine if he signed a discount deal with the FLames? lol

I have to wonder if the Devils saw making the playoffs last year as a complete fluke because it sure didn't seem like they did anything to improve their team last year to keep things going.

Leon - McDavid - Kassian

Lucic/Khaira - Cave - Chiasson
Rieder - Brodziak - Currie
Not great but not bad.

Lines from Oilersnation.
Now if they could somehow find one winger to take Gagner's spot, have Gagner slide down into Rieder's spot. Have someone to take Cave's 3rd line center spot and have Cave take over Brodziak's spot, they might not be that bad next season.

Did you know Ty Rattie is still an Oilers player? I honestly had no idea. I thought he was traded during the last gasps of the Chiarelli reign.

I forgot all about him but for me it was easy.
I never saw much in him that made me think he was a legit top 6 nhl player, including his amazing preseason.
To me he is a dime a dozen player. Enough offensive talent to occasionally look good in the top 6 but not enough to be there on a good team. Brings nothing to the table for a bottom 6 role.
Most of those guys are overseas or career AHL'ers by 25 and that is exactly where I think Rattie should be.

Don’t recall, Lucic had a long scrap with Gabriel. Dude is pretty tough.
|
You mean Kurtis "Peter" Gabriel, aka The Sledgehammer™?
I made all that up.
|
I didn’t mind it.
|
I like it a lot.
I'm sad hockey doesn't allow witty nicknames anymore. Gabsy doesn't know what he's missing.

I’m actually quite partial to the Coors Edge commercial.
You know. The one with the non alcoholic beverage in court that looks like a beer. Just hilarious.

Oil is at $60, that’s nice.
2015/2016 - This Kool-Aid tastes like McDavid flavoured Drain-O.
2016/2017 - This Kool-Aid is starting to taste like juice.
2017/2018 - I'm drinking this Kool-Aid, in hopes that it's Drain-O.
2018/2019 - Another round of Drain-O, good sir!

So long and thanks for all the fish.
This team isn't close to the playoffs. We've played pretend for long enough.

TSN throwback on the US feed. Chris Cuthbert, Ray Ferraro, and the lady who competed in the fastest skater at the all-start game.

Holy crap.
If they could have a powerplay like that against average teams they would be in the playoffs.

Very nice interview from Chiasson, 20th goal meant a lot to him.

First period random thoughts;
This devils team is really bad
Devils 1- last 30 on the PP. 2 for 31 now
NJD is the only team in the league McDavid hasnt scored on
Lucic with a long scrap, I liked it. Devil thanked him in the box and Lucic gave him the thumbs up back. Solid old school tough guy code.
Is Kosco drunk? He is wandering out of his net and has fallen down a couple times.
Larsson looks lost
Klefbom played ok but is skating funny. Maybe the boys arent fully healed.

Larsson is 10 feet from his man with 20 seconds to go, then taps Pat Sajak, I mean Travis Zajak on the head like he's still buddies and wishes he was still a Devil??
Bob Marley and the (Hartford) Wailers.

That was weird. Even if it wasn’t after a goal against.

Do the Oilers know they're playing the worst team in the league?

NBC broadcast not being complementary to Kosko during this game.
- another mishandle
- lost his balance again
- the Devils are thinking "throw everything on net"
Ferraro did say he has been mostly good since taking over to soften the blows a little bit
