So scrappy, no rhythm to the game and that's suiting the Nuck's. We just can't seem to control the puck and establish our game.

A good half a period. An outstanding first shift. So that's 1/2 a period out of 4 this year!

I'm not 100% what defensive formation the Oilers are playing at ES in their own zone, but Van has had no shortage of open guys in dangerous areas, like game 1.

Also, the Oilers D might consider tying up a stick or moving a guy that's standing there for a deflection.

Notably Bouchard might have had the roughest period I've seen from him for a long time, then again I didnt see all of the first game.

This team plays no D. BOTH D activate and Van gets a 2 on 0 goal. Beer league smarts.

Look at Nurse and Ceci on that 3-2 goal.

We are playing the 2 biggest dummies on this team together

Not how teams that think they can win a cup play. But the fun has been non-stop for a while now. Probably only actually played solid defense as a team for 1/2 a year after Tippett was fired.

Our goaltending situation is an effing disaster. How does Dustin Donkey Schwartz have a goddamned job with this team?

Both of our goalies are massive turd blossoms to start the season. Awesome.

Can't defend, can't stop quality chances.

Wonder if there is a wave of firings if this keeps up for a couple weeks.

When every fourth shot hits the back of the net, we basically are going to need iron tight defence all year. That Lafferty goal was dreadful. Not much of a shot. Ekholm stayed with his guy and made sure he wouldn't be able to get a rebound. Skinner just made himself look small there and it's straight in.

Once again, the team just lives and dies on the top 3 or 4 players - and we need them to score 6 or 7 goals a game by the looks of it.

If the Oilers are forced to make a trade for another goalie, make sure Schwartz stays a goddamned continent away from him. Just take the rest of the season off Dustin, and go live in Japan. They literally couldn't have worse 'tending, so why the hell is he on the payroll?

What is it with the Oilers and having highly suspect goaltending? Are they all just not very good, or is there more to it than that?

Yeah I wonder whether the new POHOps and his analytics guys don't change a few things up regarding goaler-ing.. how come Campbell plays OK in TO and craps the bed here? .. besides the Oiler's bad defense..

Fixing the defense is more of an offseason thing. So is goaltending.

Given the team's so hard up against the cap that they actually played short a player in Game 1, I don't think we can expect any changes on the goaltender front, nor any additions on defence any time soon. Maybe at the trade deadline, if we've had enough injuries to save up a little space, but unless we can find someone willing to take back a lot of cap - including probably one of Skinner or Campbell - then I don't expect there's any trades any time soon.

I can't see it being allowed to carry on all that long. The architects of this year's D zone coverage at ES should be under scrutiny. To me there's nothing lost in going a different direction at goaltender coach.

Nurse is last guy back.. Ceci had already committed to join rush.. Nurse with standard Zero puck IQ follows late.. ignores fact he is last guy back.. goes deep down into the slot thinking he's the second coming of Paul Coffey.. leaving nobody back.. then Foelgle misses the net.. as you'd expect.. you can see in the photo Ceci looking at Nurse in astonishment that he is right next to him.. caption shoudl be "Nurse.. W T * are you doing.. Here?"

Other than Ekholm.. no Oiler defenceman can play effective defense.. Bouchard with another of his patented PP drop-pass-cough-ups right on to a guys stick.... killing 40 seconds off the PP each time.. he's done it 2 games in a row.. other teams can read him like a comic book.

Then Skinner.. 4 goals on 16 shots.. a solid 0.75.. brutal.

Then the offense .. nobody skating.. make themselves look like a slow team.. Brown, Kane, Hyman, no threat to score.. even 29... can't keep (or get) puck possession on a low tier team.. only guys that looked quick were McLeod and McD..

Current Oilers will get killed by one of the top 50% teams.

Oilers change defensive systems to something that's supposed to be simpler .. and easier to execute.. Oilers still can't figure it out..

Ceci committed to just skating right beside (a bit ahead actually) a forward. That's a dumb play still. At best you've left Nurse with a 2 on 1. He had no good reason to be up there.

Ceci needs a smack. 99% of the time him jumping up is a complete waste, and usually turns into something worse coming our way. His offensive skill is crap, he should not be jumping and gambling up as much as he does. He needs to be the responsible one on his pair if that pair will have any hope. Nurse is never going to be the responsible one, it's not how he plays, and the coaches and his D partner need to be far more aware of it.

Woodcroft also (rightly) called out Foegele's decision on this play too. Yes, horrible decision by the defence to both jump up for no real good reason, but with an odd-man rush, Foegele took a bad angle shot from distance and missed the net by a country mile, starting the breakout for the Canucks.

Pretty terrible decision-making all around on that play, but over the course of the game, the Oilers badly outplayed the Canucks. Generally if you outshoot a team 40-16, you can deal with one bad breakdown in the course of the game. The Oilers didn't allow a lot of chances, never mind 5-bell chances in this game outside of this goal. Sadly, we only got 12 saves all night.

By no means am I happy about Skinners play. I think he still looks just as defeated as he did last playoffs. And I am very worried that a whole summer with Schwartz may have actually solidified more self defeating habits into his game. We could be in the process of destroying another goalie that we will trade for peanuts and watch do better somewhere else in 2-3 years, insisting he never could have done it here. Really hope that's not the case, but ugly start, including pre-season. I hope he can get some confidence back.

All hopes and dreams lie with Campbell for now. Oh boy.

Still not happy with the defensive play though. Canucks clearly are playing a defensive counterpunch style and they got us pretty good, even though we dominated possession. We should have won for sure, but everything went bad, poor finish (combo if the opposing goalie playing well and us just flubbing on good chances), some badly timed defensive breakdowns and stinky goaltending. Same stuff that ended our playoffs.

Substitute in the name Nurse for Ceci and the exact same thing applies.. his offensive forays are 99% of the time fruitless.. and will almost always create a grade A chance against going the other direction..
I'd argue he needs to be the one responsible defensively .. not just his partner.. (whether its Ceci or someone else).. I mean its not like Nurse is a Kris Letang .. and he's a guy that provides some legit offense for the team.. and you need a defensively conscious partner to cover for the risks he needs to take to get it..

Unfortunately Nurse's offensive ability is not what he thinks it is.

The funny thing is, I remember an interview where he said he studies film all summer.. must be Netflix he's watching.

As a coach.. what can you do with this guy? I'm sure they tell him to play defense first.. yet

While I think it's a little fashionable to crap on Darnell Nurse, the fact is that he's actually decent offensively.

With limited powerplay time, over the last three years he has 114 points in 209 games. He's also been highly net positive in that time. He's +71 over those three years. His game is not mistake-free, and he certainly made a glaring one on that goal against last game. I think the Oilers over-paid for him when they signed him to the big contract, and they missed some obvious arguments as to why not to commit that much money at that time.

That said, he is a good defenceman who adds a lot to the team at both ends of the ice, and he shouldn't be judged solely on the high visibility plays.

I would love to see Nurse not do goofy things, but I'm just accepting that it's not gonna happen, and he needs a responsible partner to cover for him. We're married to Nurse now, we'll never trade him, and he is gonna play the way he plays. The manager is in complete control of his partner though and finding a right compliment, and I think we have messed that up at the moment. Ceci seems to think he can play like a crappy version of Nurse with none of the silver linings to his game. I think Nurse is still much better on offense than Ceci, he skates better and has a better shot on the rush.

We're married to Nurse now

Just for fun, here's what a Nurse buyout would cost:

Smart agenting.

If McDrai stay, we're extending Nurse in summer 2029 for a near blank cheque amount again.

Trouble is, unless you score 6 goals.. its the consistent Nurse brain farts that will cost games (to be fair not just his).. even if its just 2 or 3 a game.. NHL games are too tight for major mistakes every game.. one of the things that makes Ekholm stand out so much on the Oilers.. his mistakes are few or non-existent..

You'd think a NHL coach could get these concepts through to Nurse after all this time..

Ekholm walked now for a goal. I'm honestly concerned there is actually something in the water.

I guess its back to Soup next game. Even deflections have to hit a goaltender sometimes, as demonstrated by the YVR backup.

Highlight of the game might be "saved his own samosa". Might be a substance infused reaction but I laughed at that one.
