I'll disagree on the slowness part. Campbell has always been super athletic, but last year his anticipation and angles were all wrong. If anything he was often over-playing and moving his feet too much. It's all in the head with him.

I'll have to stick with my original comment.. I distinctly remember how slow his reaction time was to come across his net after a cross ice pass for a shot.. he's looked better now.. but .. still pre-season..

Campbell reminds me of Smith. Always looks like he's trying hard, even when his sav% is 0.800. When he's making the saves, looks amazing. When he's not, looks terrible to be working that hard to suck :) Players seem inspired by his effort and never quit approach so we always seem to have a shot with him in net still.

When Skinner is off his game though, his second effort on saves just vanishes, you can see a guy that has his confidence in the toilet. Reminds me of Kotsko. When he's on his game, technically pretty solid. When he's off, the team seems to sag along with him because everyone can see he's looking defeated.

Maybe the Oilers are just destined to have Smith's and Kostko's forever now.

I think the pre-season, for the most part, has gone as expected. Some of the predictions posters had heading into September:

-Holloway would be a year older and make the team
-Lavoie would show just enough to make the big club in part because of his waiver status.
-The X-man would be improved but would still be a year away
-Broberg would not overwhelm but probably stick at the #6 D spot
-Campbell would bounce back
-A few other guys would show the club some stuff but would all be sent down to Bako since vitrually all would pass waivers.

So far, check marks all around?

I am hoping that either some kind of update or McLeod is playing happens. They have said it's a minor thing and they are just being cautious but he hasn't played a single game and I felt he was a guy that needed camp. They are counting on him to do a pretty important role. I think he is capable of doing it but they need all guys firing on all cylinders to start the year so missing pretty much all of camp isn't ideal.

I am all for letting these guys get healthy. So I am not complaining about that.

Given the style of game and his experience, I am not as concerned about Ekholm missing time. I don't see his game revolving around high skill and needing puck touches to get the hands going as much as other guys. Please don't bite my head off because I said his game isn't all about high skill. The NHL games is of course a higher skill game than it used to be so Ekhlom of course needs skill. My comment is more based on the fact that his bread and butter and what makes him so effective is a lot different than say a Bouchard who's bread and butter is high end offensive skill. So in my opinion, I think Ekholm can probably step in without as much puck touches in game action and not have it impact his game as much as a more offensive Dman.

McLeod on the other hand, given he's a center I think could have a harder time getting going with a lack of game action. He needs to make plays with the puck, take faceoffs, pass, shoot. All of which might be impacted with a lack of games.

I think who starts in goal game 1 is going to be an indication to me what this season is all about to the team especially the coaches. Are we here to win or we'd like to win but we have people's feelings in mind.

I am a big fan of Skinner, I think he's their future starter for a very long time. He rightly took over the job when Campbell buckled. But Skinner is young and still developing. In the playoffs, I thought they should have started Campbell at least once because he was playing better and this preseason, it hasn't been close. But for game 1, Campbell deserves it. The contract means nothing. He's clearly done the work and did MAJOR changes. I get it's preseason but he's night and day right now. He out in the time and effort, they have to recognize that and reward him with opening night.

I'll never find it not funny that people can get SOOOO excited about pre-season results. Peter White was going to be the next great player in the league! Dean McAmmond was just about to have his true breakout year! Campbell has clearly rediscovered his game!!!

I may be misreading some of the posts, but I don’t think anyone believes we know if Campbell has rediscovered his game, but he has outplayed Skinner. I have next to no trust in Campbell, but with his fragile ego I think you need to reward him with starts when he’s playing well.

Right now he’s deserving of starting the opening game. I would live to have a 50/50 or 60/40 tandem like Boston had last year.

Agreed. Campbell deserves game one. He played amazing in pre season. He was also excellent in the playoffs when he came in. Last year doesn’t signify what he could do this year.

I don't disagree that I'd start Campbell game 1, but there are Edmonton media guys, and the couple of people in here that love to parrot what they say faithfully who are suggesting that Campbell just worked hard all summer, and that's why he's been so good.

That ignores that he did have SOME good stretches last year (although surrounded by bad ones) and that pre-season competition is not a good measuring stick. They're selling more hope here, where I think that at best only cautious optimism is deserved.

I think Skinner didn't look good in pre-season, but again, it's pre-season so would not make any sweeping judgements on him solely based on that.
