There are still no "easy outs" in the playoffs ...
But - is perhaps the path paved for a potential Oilers-Leafs Stanley Cup final? How awesome would that be?!?!? I think Dallas, Carolina, and the Rangers are all realistic possibilities too - but it might just be that the Oilers and Leafs are the two best teams standing after the first round. Personally, I'd love to see them both in the Finals - and once more remind TO that McDavid >>>>> Matthews, Draisatl >>>>> Marner/Tavares.

He's going to end somebody's career some day and the NHL will have to play dumb in the billion dollar lawsuit. He may have made initial contact lower, but his upper arm goes straight through the head of Meier. NHL needs to cut that kind of crap. He should be suspended for the first 10 games of next season but the "he just got caught on the trolly tracks" Don Cherry lovers will prevent that.

That was like the hit Clark Stevens ended Eric Lindros's career with.. looked down for an instant and got the shoulder right in the head.. off to never-never land.. these days that hit usually gets a multi-game from DOPS.. Trouba didn't even get a 2 minute.. not like he hasn't done it before.. numerous times.. its like he's received an immunity card

I actually thought that was a clean hit. Very hard, but it's not like Stevens/Kariya, where it's a couple of seconds late - Meier had the puck and was deking along with it. Trouba didn't leave his feet. He didn't throw up his elbow and he hit through the body. Meier was unfortunately because his head was caught, but I don't think that's the same as targeting the head since Trouba's hit was right through the middle of him. I'm not sure there's anything Trouba can do differently there other than not hit him at all and I don't want to outlaw any hitting. I don't even think you can say it's predatory, because while Meier clearly doesn't notice the danger, he isn't blindsided by it. He's not caught while turning or anything.

I think Trouba can be dirty at times, but that hit in my eyes is a clean one.

Got our Cam Ward-esque Candidate for 2023?

22 year old Akria Schmid. Badass name. 2 GA and probably a 0.980+ sav% in the 4 wins against the Rangers to save New Jersey's season.

Quite the playoff debut for Schmid, no doubt. Shesterkin was no slouch at the other end either.

NJ outshot the Rangers overall and absolutely dominated them in 5x5 SCF% and HDCF% (57.8% and 63.3% respectively for the series). Speed & skill still matter in the playoffs.

If Vanecek hadn't been a total nightmare in the first 2 games and Shesterkin wasn't doing Shesterkin things, this series probably looks a lot different.

Nope - I've heard it from the talking heads on TV and radio, and parroted here and other sites. Only way to win even a single playoff game is to be big and tough and "hard to play against".

Yeah Rangers are not that strong from an analytics perspective. Depend too much on shooting talent and goaltending. Hot goalie comes and it's game over. Think Galant is pretty overrated too. The super fun time coaching works when everyone is rolling. When adversity comes, the Rangers looked like garbage.

Jersey management also did not just leave a bunch of lads stranded. Haula and Palat were huge in their series.

It wasn't just Schmid (although he was great).. I watched the last game, NJ just out skated Rangers, plus their sticks were breaking up plays everywhere on the ice.. created endless turnovers that they could quickly turn the other way.. Rangers spent most of the game on their heels, very few cycles in their own zone, great defensive system.. very few breakdowns.. could easily take out Carolina.

Love seeing Rangers fizzle out.

They'll have to decide on Kane and Tarasenko for next year, both UFA's ..

Jersey did allow 5 goals 3 times. And then 2 goals in 4 wins and their goalie did have lots of spectacular saves. Even last night just sniping stuff out of the air with the glove with the Rangers having loads to shoot at. Rangers probably finish the series off if Schmid didn't appear. They just needed 1 more weak goalie night and Vanecek looked like he was ready to serve it up. Doesn't necessarily mean they would have deserved it of course, but Rangers are built for kinda needing that. They're a bundle of scoring talent that depends on their own goalie a lot, and not that great of a system of play.

I guess we want Florida to come out of the East? Leafs Canes and Devils all would have home ice advantage in a final with the Oilers.

Honestly blown away by how he keeps getting better. The lad lives to troll, so does his brother. The power it gives them seems infinite. Never had to worry about money in their lives, it's just about the hockey and creating a legacy of being the most annoying bastards possible.

The Rangers just rolled over and died last night. Panarin must have been hurt because 2 assists for him in 7 games is pretty bad.

Senators must be strutting around pretty good. Stutzle looks unreal and the best player in the draft especially when you look at the struggles of Lafreniere and Byfield.

Yeah regardless of outcome I want them to beat eachother up. The Squid are a fast team, great structure, few defensive breakdowns, Hackstal is a good coach.. Pavelski had some skilled tips.. won't be getting those every game.. Squid look pretty good

I've been to Oilers games in several other arenas (including the Saddledome). It may have just been an unfortunate experience in a particular part of the arena on a particular day - but by far the Stars fans in Dallas were the most obnoxious and the least knowledgeable. Sad, because it was also the first hockey experience for our son-in-law and daughter-in-law.

Yes...hence why I want Dallas out. I won't hear the end of it if we lost to this particular team....

In all fairness however, we did cheer when Doughty was limping off the ice in game 5...these mishaps happen with a small minority of fans usually which isn't a indicator of an entire fanbase however.

I think these late starts (almost 9 central time) are hurting Dallas as a Pacific time zone team like the Kraken are really benefitting off of these puck drops. Let's hope this trend continues with games in Dallas.

In yesterday's other game, I have a feeling that the Leafs first round series says much more about the Lightning being down with all their physical/mental wear & tear than them actually conquering their own demons.

There is mocking from fans reserved for lifetime trolls like Doughty for sure. In the case of the Seattle player last night, it was just one of their average guys. He was down on the ice for a good 10-15 seconds. Seattle finally got possession and the refs blew the whistle. The Dallas fans saw why and started booing. The guy was still down struggling to get up, and finally as he slowly went off there was just silence, maybe a handful of Seattle fans in the building clapped as he slowly went off.

Was just very odd. Not what you typically get from fans in that kind of situation.

I also enjoy Dallas losses, and I didn't enjoy my experience - other than McDavid's first career hat-trick and a win going away - when I drove up from Austin to catch a game.

No desire to catch an Avs game now though

Have you been to T-Mobile in Vegas yet?

Very passionate. Extremely obnoxious and uneducated. It was a game in February I believe and every time Vegas crossed the blueline on a rush everyone around us would stand up like it was game 7 of the finals. It got really old by the first intermission.

There was a Jewish gentleman in front of us that asked if we were from Edmonton. We had no jersey or hats on. We said we were. Not just the goals, but EVERY opportunity he had (save, bodycheck or whatever) he would turn around and get in our faces. I gave him no provocation whatsoever. If I did not have my wife beside me I'm pretty certain I would have smacked him so hard that his beanie would have landed on the ice. He wasn't the only one. We has aisle seats and many people across the aisle were cussing us out and giving us the finger on goals. It was so weird because we had no Oiler garb on. We were not chirping or standing after Oiler goals. We only stood when we couldn't see.

I really hated the Knights after that evening....lol. Go Oilers!!!

Thanks for the anecdote, that's some grade A douche-baggery.. I'd thought of seeing a game down there someday but I'll probably give it a miss.. I would have thought everyone down there would have a lot cooler vibe being in the party capital of the USA.. I guess what would you expect from a team that sports chrome helmets..

I hear that and it makes me angry. I see opposing jersey in the WHL all the time and I try to make them welcome in my barn. When I go to Edmonton I might joke with someone, but they’re just like me. They have a favourite team and they’re supporting them. Plus it might be their first NHL game so it should be a positive experience. Even in game 5 against LA I made sure to be nice to the few Kings fans I saw.

Rangers fans were all class when I went to NY. Bought me a beer. Tried to trade fir Gretzky shirt. Class acts and a fun barn. Highly recommend MSG.

It would have been much more enjoyable if the Oilers won. I will say that.

I’ve not been to Vegas … thought about going their first year, but timing never meshed with family/work schedule. Sad to hear of your experience there … I don’t mind the passionate and can tolerate slightly obnoxious … but when you combine that with clueless it’s unbearable.

Moving to New Orleans next month - will try to hit games in Carolina and Florida next few years!

That is too bad to hear because I have nothing but good things to say about Golden Knight fans in Las Vegas. Been around the Vegas hockey scene both just watching as a fan and as media. I've been able to interact with folks in the region who know the sport going back to when the city was home to various minor pro teams and they have a ton of love for UNLV's club hockey program.

I think it was just the section I was in to be honest. It was about 4-6 individuals. I was there the season after their cup run. The amount of people walking around the city with Knights garb was staggering. Everywhere. Business, flags etc. This was pre-Steelers and you could see the entire city getting behind their only pro sports team. A regular season game was a huge event to them evidenced by the tailgating and never ending jersey spotting a full day before the game. I was impressed.

I'm starting to think that Leafs 1st round win says more about Tampa than themselves conquering past demons....

Hedman played with a ruined hip. Point had busted ribs. And their team in general has to be exhausted from all the playoff runs they've had. Vasilevski had a stinker series too.

Their deadline adds have been huge, O'Reilly and Knies. Dubas hit the mark finally. The door opened up for the leafs. It was bound to happen one day. Hopefully Florida can slam that door shut :)

One would think that last round would have taught people not to assume the round is over based on the result of the first game. I'm happy to see Seattle beat Dallas and moderately pleased about the Panthers over the Leafs (although my dislike for Tkachuk is making that a little harder). But there's a LOT of hockey left to be played and I don't think any conclusions should be drawn from those games.

Ditto the game tonight. Win or lose, rout or triple overtime, tonight is just one event out of a series and doesn't decide anything.

Of course....Leafs might win a game or two but I can't help but to think how they just looked gutless at the most critical moments of a series in 18, 19, 20, 21...22...

Great points...I did mention something about the wear/tear of that team from a mental/physical perspective.

It's crazy how Tampa being in a state with no income tax wasn't able to get their core contributors to take a discount whereas Dallas has been very effective at getting everyone to sign at significant discounts....(except for Seguin/Benn).

Besides Brayden Point, surprised at how awful Tampa is at faceoffs as he's the only guy who can win them...this dating back to their 19-20 cup run when dude was out there winning every draw.

Surprising to see Eberle out their on key faceoffs last night though I remember him being listed as a center when being drafted by the Oilers.
