The Oilers can't sell their inventory as it is. Customers become competition very quickly.

So the sell out streak is over? icon_rolleyes

You know you've screwed up pretty bad as an organization when you can't sell out your building in a hockey mad city like Edmonton with one of the best players in the history of the game in his prime with another guy who will go down as one of the best Europeans ever riding shotgun.

The sellout streak was always a lie. It ended before Eakins was here. Being hockey mad only goes so far when you don't provide value for the entertainment dollar. Oddly, the salary cap isn't going up as much as previously thought despite prices going way up. Very very odd. Maybe they should include 50/50 revenue in the calculation?

Tough sell when even if you get free tickets. Even with a free seat it’s still a $100 night once you pay for parking, grab a tub of popcorn, 50/50 and a snack. Never mind a beer or two. Souvenirs? Fughetabouit.

I don’t know how the average person does it more than once a season if they pay full retail for their seats and take their family. Oh wait … they don’t.

I was close to going to Flames game last night since I was in town for work, and did a hard pass. Lower bowl were still $300+ just prior to puck drop. The only affordable seats were press level and screw that.

Canadian NHL teams need corporations to stay afloat. Jane/Joe Blue Collar was priced out 20 years ago.

I was in the press level seats at the 'Dome for the MacT/Harvey incident. Can't see the benches from those seats so didn't even know about it until the next day. That being said, those seats are actually pretty good to watch a game from. Would have been $15-$20 seats 20 years ago.

Ha, I was in the 200s for that game - as a poor college student, I had the Flames' Minipacks just to see the Oilers play 1-2x a year. 7 games for $120-ish dollars back then. Had a great view of the rip from behind and to the side. Too bad my old Nokia phone didn't take great video back then

Don't know how some of those USA franchises stay afloat, Arizona can't sell out a 5,000 seat NCAA arena.. and that last game in Nashville looked half full.. to see the greatest player in NHL history..

Covid is nothing more than an excuse. These problems were evident as soon as the initial buzz of the new arena wore off. Covid does not factor into the cost value equation.

well I disagree. Lots of people are less well off, since Covid financially, for one reason or another. Affordability and inflation are way up since covid messed up supply chains world wide, and there other influences beyond covid too that are driving prices of everything up, and nice things to have like going to oilers games occasionally just gets dropped for those that were borderline able to afford it in the first place.
Sure there is other reasons, but its not only related to Oilers, numbers are down in most leagues.

Oh o agree. I just think people have gotten lazy since covid. People just don’t seem to want to go out near as much anymore especially later type games

I know me and my wife are hurting a bit since covid. She lost her 70 grand a year job. She’s now with RCMP and making good money but we lost out on two years of pay and went about 10 grand in the hole so we haven’t been able to do as much as we like. Covid has definitely screwed things up, but over all I agree. People can afford it. Just seems people are lazy more now

Saskatchewan Roughrider games never had trouble selling out. Now we can’t even fill half the stadium. Labour day was a stretch to sell out. Times have changed. It’s sad. Seems it’s hard to even fill half an area

The price of entertainment is just not sustainable. I've always been one of those people that have pretty much always just shelled out the asking price. But lately I've just started to say no. I just can't justify the prices.

Concerts ticket prices are insane. People are selling WJC ticket packages here in Moncton and Halifax for over $2K. Single game exhibition game for over $300 - for juniors!!!! And even regular season NHL hockey tickets for $200-$300 a pop - it's just not good value IMO.

I am one of the lazy. I went from a social butterfly to a man very comfortable with my own company and the couch during the evening. That being said I have made the trip 3 times to watch a game this year and will likely end up going to 10+. If you are willing to wait untl the last hour before puck drop on TM Verified Ticket Resale, you can regularly get lower bowl seats for under a $100 and never more than $120. There are tons of good seats for every game, regardless of the opponent (Toronto/Montreal excluded). I keep planning my work trips around the NHL schedule for a reason, haha.

And thank you for the PL seats tip. They are still in the $30-40 range. I have just heard horror stories of the 90 degree stairs and obstructed views, but from no one who I have known to actually go to a game.

Some people might be less well off, but Oilers ticket buyers??? I'm not so sure. The laptop class was protected over covid, as was the ownership class, and the patch it doing pretty alright right now. The stresses the Oilers were facing (too much inventory at too high of a price with expensive add-ons) were apparent long before covid. They weren't able to sell their product out in 2018 or 2022. Covid, at worst, might have amplified that, but the problems are much deeper than just covid. The Oilers and many of their peers are simply living in a world they created for themselves that never existed.

Plenty of seats still available!

Ya, ticetmaster showing some sections are still only half sold. and the team is being jerks about people buying and re-selling.

Meh

Seems everything since covid has changed. Hard to sell out any games. Whether that’s NFL, NBA, baseball. Anything.

Covid is nothing more than an excuse. These problems were evident as soon as the initial buzz of the new arena wore off. Covid does not factor into the cost value equation.

I think it has to do with a lot of factors:

- the team still isn't great even with superstars on it
- the economy of Alberta has struggled for several years, and even though it's a little better now, there's less extra cash for a lot of folks than there once was
- the team has scraped every cent it can out of people. The tickets are among the league's most expensive and the food and drink costs are ridiculous now. People can't afford to go to as many games as they used to, because the team has extracted every penny at every step of the way.

Even the 50/50 isn't the draw it once was, because A) again, it is way more expensive and B) you don't need to be in the building to play, and you don't even find out the winner while you're there.

The Oilers haven't done much to increase the value of their offering, while the shiny newness of the building and even the superstars has waned a little. So people save up for the playoff tickets, and reduce the number of times they're in the building along the way.

As for why they are now cracking down on the re-sellers? That's simple. They sell walk-up tickets (now on a variable scale, rather than fixed prices) and if someone buys at season ticket prices, they can sell at a profit below what walk-up price would be. When there's tremendous demand, then it doesn't matter to the Oilers. They don't have much inventory to sell anyhow.

But now there's less season ticket holders and more seats for them to sell, and if they get undercut by their own season ticket holders, then they end up holding the bag on more unsold tickets. And happily for them, the move to the Ticket Manager app makes it really easy to tell. If you sell your tickets to a different random person every game and never keep the tickets yourself, and the seats aren't going to people with similar company email or similar last name or anything? They can figure that out much easier than when it was that greasy-haired guy selling the physical tickets outside Rexall Place while nearby some guy hammered away on PVC pails with a couple drumsticks.

With that in mind, it makes sense for them to go after the re-sellers. And you know what? I don't give a damn about scalpers losing their tickets. Those people drive the price up in the times when things are good, so if they get slapped down? I'm all for it. I just wish it wasn't simply the Oilers being only focused on the bottom line that led to that, rather than concerned about actual fan experience.

There aren't scalpers anymore. You can't scalp tickets when the primary seller has an unsold inventory of thousands of tickets they can't sell. What we're left with now is STHs who bought overpriced tickets for THE premium entertainment offering in the city and are now stuck with the excess inventory. Their crime is trying to recoup tickets at 90 cents on the dollars while the Oilers are still pretending they're worth a buck.

Unless something drastic happens, the Oilers have priced themselves out of their market.

But with season ticket discounts, you can still sell for greater than 100% of your cost and be below what the Oilers want to sell gate tickets for...

Which is only a problem if the Oilers are stuck with a significant number of unsold season tickets.

Question for STHs then, are you able to sell your low priority games on weeknights for cost?

Are they? Only heard the one anecdote from the guy selling SIX seats to almost all the games for several years - not a single person chimed in on that thread with a similar story.

Also - if anyone didn't notice, in late November Matheson started showing back up in Journal articles. Still bizarre - there was reports he'd been let go, he commented on Jones' dismissal, then no articles for months from him. He's been around - still in all the scrums and active on twitter saying inane things, but no articles until about a month ago...Now he seems to be back.

Weird.
