but he had an agent.. just like McD I think he realized this is near his limit if he wants to have a decent roster to play with and win anything, which he could have figured out himself.. easiest 10% that agent ever got.. maybe McKinnon can get the agent to clean his pool!

Open market would need him to have another healthy year. Plus he'll be 28 next. Loads of risk waiting another season to sign.

Seems fair for everyone involved. Nate gets to say hew as the highest paid guy for a year or 2. He makes up for the previous bargain deal. He doesn't risk anything signing a year early and gets pretty close to what he would have got as a UFA, if he had a great season.

Yeah, people are making a lot of the McDavid ceiling, but if I'm in the NHLPA, I am trying to convince people that that is completely artificial and that a 5-year old contract has little to do with a contract signed today.

MacKinnon is one of the best in the business and if he was UFA, he could demand whatever he wanted from any team. He's likely only the top paid for a couple years anyhow. When Matthews' deal ends, he is going to be even higher.

Arizona definitely has the cap space. Will be nice of the Leafs to pay for it too with revenue sharing.

That may be, but I think he's paid incredibly well halfway through a career at just a hair over 1 ppg.
