If Matthews scored 60 for Florida and Huberdeau had 123 points for Toronto, Huberdeau would win in a landslide. Its not about who or what? Its about where they played. Sadly small market Edmonton doesn't really matter much to the NHLs bottom line compared to the mighty Maple Syrups. If Draisatl scored 60 and Matthews had more points does anyone honestly think Drai would win? Not in a million years.

The Oilers have won the last 2 and 3 of 5. I'm willing to accept this year was Toronto / Matthews turn but thinking of it as a travesty against poor little Edmonton is a step too far.

Agreed. I think the league is holding McDavid to a different standard, but it's because they want to write a different story, not because they hate Edmonton.

CrusaderPi wrote on Thu, 23 June 2022 15:11

. The real lesson here is about the media.

The bargain is writers get to write their stories and the NHL gets stories written about it. What that has to do with determining who the most valuable player is is beyond me.

I think the voting process should have video review.

Such a joke. So how did so many think he finished worse then 2nd. They were voting for a particular result. NHL awards are an embarrassment.

At WORST you could maybe justify 3rd if you have REALLY love goals that much and put Matthews ahead, and Shesterkin did have a very good year. Lower than that, you're right, they're trying to get the result they want.

I read on ON this morning that one of the voters didn't have McDavid OR Matthews in his top 5. He did have JT Miller though crazy

But JT Milller's team missed the playoffs. How can a player on a team who missed the playoffs even merit any consideration? The unwritten rules clearly state that your team must make the playoffs or else you can't have been that valuable.

Hang on now - wasn't there also the argument that the team being TOO GOOD also disqualified the players? The main reason they awarded it to Taylor Hall was because without him, the Devils would not have made the playoffs.

The Leafs were 31 points up on the 9th place team in the East. Surely the Leafs would still have made the playoffs without Matthews, so he should not have been a consideration. Right? They were actually a lot better without him in the lineup this year. 7-2! Almost a 130 point pace! 30-15-2 all time. Screams opposite of MVP to me. Matthews - LVP! icon_biggrin

High scoring player on a team that barely made the playoffs...

Matt Duchene is the really Hart winner this year.

I say all this and I don't think Matthews was undeserving, I am more just making fun of the moving target that is the NHL awards and who should win from year to year.

I saw yesterday that the Avs got Bowen Byram as a part of the Matt Duchene trade return. imagine if Taylor Hall had been traded for his actual value.

Hey that bootlicker Ryan Rishaug told me that sometimes you have to lose a trade to make your team better. Chiarelli said in his presser that New Jersey got the best player in the deal. But look where it's led us to! We finished well above New Jersey in the standings this year. Proof that Rishaug was a prophet.

Let's name and shame!

Fluto Shinzawa - 5th

This guy is also a clown. His top vote for Norris? McAvoy. Only guy out of the whole bunch not to pick Makar, Josi or Hedman.

I saw that one vote for the Boston guy and I was sure it was Haggerty

Fluto is from Boston and used to be with the Boston Globe. Unlike Gregor, he has no issues with being a ridiculous homer.

I'll always appreciate Button for trading Marc Savard always from the Flames for absolutely nothing. Chiarelli was bad with 1 or 1 trades, but Marc Savard for Ruslan Zaynullin was an awful trade that everyone forgets about when talking about all time bad trades, and might have cost the Flames the Stanley Cup the following season. Thanks Craig.

I think you're forgetting just how important a piece Zaynullin really was to the Flames. Glue guy. Great in the room. So many intangibles!

Based on the alleged criteria that the Hart trophy should go to the most valuable player on a team.. Marcel Dionne should have won it half a dozen times.

What would the actual proper definition be?

Award that goes to either a player that was clearly ahead of everyone else that we can't ignore, or to a player that has been really good for some time that has not yet won the award that we feel deserves to finally get recognition in a year all the candidates are close together. And on special occasions, when the field is pretty weak and even, we can troll a team for making a bad trade and give it to a Taylor Hall.

I think you nailed it!

P. Chiarelli math.. T. Hall = A. Larsson, Yak= bag o'pucks (OK he got one right...) K. Russell = $4.1 M+NMC, G. Reinhart= M. Barzal + A. Beauvillier, J. Eberle = R. Spooner,

I'm forgetting how your team has to be in or barely missed the playoffs to qualify no matter how good you were, but I guess that is common knowledge.
