Bob McKenzie always has more hits than misses, so it should be appropriate to start off with his perspective on the next Entry Draft.
"Let’s make one thing clear from the get-go: The 2022 NHL Draft is the Shane Wright Draft.
The Kingston Frontenacs’ centre is the unanimous No. 1 on TSN’s Pre-Season 2022 NHL Draft Rankings. Ten out of 10 scouts surveyed by TSN identified the 6-foot, 185-pound Burlington, Ont., native as the clear-cut choice.
And, until further notice, they say it’s not even close."

2023 might be interesting. I watched Bedard last night. Smallish and a bit tentative away from the puck, but unreal shot and release. Elite NHL quality. Nice quick touch passes. Had 2 goals in game 1, but Yager who was passed over for exceptional status popped a hatty in his first game.
The WHL has some serious talent this year. I’m excited to watch these two all year.

The Oilers seem to be hellbent on self destruction, so maybe it's time to examine Bob McKenzie's rankings for the 2022 draft. Still hoping the Oilers are picking in the 32 spot, but # 1 isn't out of the question if they don't turn down the suck real soon.

Not technically to do with draft rankings, but a couple interesting tidbits about how smart vs dumb NHL teams operate in player evaluation, in these cases prospect interviews. First the Leafs (specifically Jack Han), from 2019:

Does this player have strong hockey-specific pattern recognition skills relative to his peers
Does this player love the game and have the desire to improve when challenged
And so I build out a testing methodology which relied on temporal occlusion, a video-based technique well-understood by baseball, volleyball and tennis researchers seeking to understand “game sense” and anticipation.
Two players stood out from the pack:
Nick Robertson for his intensity and interest for video analysis (“would make an excellent hockey ops intern for TOR,” I noted)
Nick Abruzzese for his uncanny ability to read the play (“elite hockey IQ”)
I made the test more difficult for Abruzzese than anyone else, and yet he was still able to recall details and accurately predict where the puck was headed with close to a 100% accuracy.

We're basically in 'looking at how hot a player's girlfriend is to determine how confident a player' is territory is with that last one.
I know which approach I think the Oilers are closer to taking.
It really is amazing to me sometimes how much space there is between good and bad organizations in this league.

This is why I have hope that someone would be dumb enough to give up an asset for the Kassian contract without forcing the Oilers to retain salary. There are still probably a third of the teams that aren't much better run than the Oilers, so find one of those guys, and trade him grit and the promise that one day Kassian will take a step forward. I mean, this is a guy who we had so much confidence in that in the last two games of our run, we were playing him in the top six - are you telling me your team doesn't need a guy like that???
I would really love to be the team on the winning side of some deals for a change. Other than one magical season, that really hasn't happened since Sather was the GM.
