Which Oilers team to we get to see tonight I wonder?
The one that competes and even outplays the league leaders, or the one that plays down to the level of their opponent and loses to a bottom feeder?

It's up to the best players on the team to set the ton. Yes depth matters but if a teams best players don't play well and set the ton early, it typically doesn't matter what your bottom 2 lines do. The big boys need to come out and set the standard they are going hard. If they do that, I think they will be fine.

This would be a very bad week to swoon. Not only would it be giving away points that the team desperately needs, but it would convince the GM to lie down and give up.

But if a team is going to take a week off, doing it against non-conference non-playoff teams is the week to do it.

I'm just assuming Smith plays tonight. Haven't seen him since the Habs, Kostko played well in the last three but gotta get the old man some work.

19 is in tonight. As much as I’d like to see another Smith meltdown, 2pts is more important.

Oh good. They're riding a goalie who can't play every game again. I can't see how this goes poorly and ends up costing more points than it earns. Maybe it would be a good idea to see who starts the back to back game against Colorado next Monday now?

Kosko says that's in your head..

We'll see!

Putting Smith in net is too risky at this point.. he needs game time to get NHL acceptable and these games aren't pre-season.. should have taken a 2 week assignment in Bako.

He can't play in every game and Smith is going to need to play if there is any hope of him regaining any form. Just playing Kostko into the ground is dumb.

Better option... are you referring to Ken Holland strapping the pads back on?

No no. We did this exercise before. Koskinen played well for a good stretch of games and then fell off a freaking cliff. That's not in my head, that's the start of the Oilers' long and sustained swan dive in the standings.

Can we confirm though that during these stretches Dave Tippett was not walking up and down the halls cursing Kostko's name and constantly asking Kostko why he can't be more like Mike Smith? Maybe things are different now

This a classic trap game we've all seen too many times.. but I think there is a more desperate attitude with the Oilers these last few games.. plus some bodies back.. I'll go out on limb, they don't sag, and predict a V !! :)

Holy crap.. saw this on Lowetide's site.. didn't realize the drafting outside 1st round was so abysmal.. pretty poor.. until most recently..

This sounds a lot worse than it is. Pitlick was 2010, McLeod was 2018. That leaves seven years (2011-2017) where the Oilers had a total of four 2nd round picks (they didn't have a 2nd rounder in 2014, 2015, or 2017). The four players are David Musil (2011), Mitch Moroz (2012), Marco Roy (2013), and Tyler Benson (2016). So they've had three 2nd round busts (not going to call Benson a bust yet) in seven years--hardly unusual.

Oilers haven't drafted with 2nd picks much in the last 10 years. First three were bad but others are still TBD.
https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/teams/dr00005632.html
I think the bigger question is how have the Oilers not gotten any truly great players outside the first round since Tikkanen and Kurri in the 80s?

Well, Skinner's now the 7th most games played of any Oilers drafted goalie (Fuhr, Moog, Dubnyk, Markkanen, Deslauriers and Morrisson are the ones ahead of him), so you shouldn't be too surprised.

The team's conversion rate outside of the 1st round isn't amazing and then on top of that even when they do get one right, the team often doesn't realize it. We have virtually no players from the 4th round or later who've made the team in the last 12 years - just Dillon Simpson (3 games), William Lagesson and Ethan Bear - but in that time, we've had three more (Tobias Rieder, Erik Gustafsson, and John Marino) who've turned out to be real NHL players without the Oilers really figuring it out. The 6th round pick we got for Marino is the best deal we managed with any of them.

I'm curious why we missed out on some of the better draft picks we've made.

.. The 6th round pick we got for Marino is the best deal we managed with any of them..

Well to be fair, they knew Marino was good, he just wouldn't sign.

I'm not positive that they did know. I think Marino believed he was good, but he and the Oilers disagreed about where he fit in the organizational depth chart. He was right.

Holy crap.. saw this on Lowetide's site.. didn't realize the drafting outside 1st round was so abysmal.. pretty poor.. until most recently..

".. Rookie Ryan McLeod has already played more NHL games than any Oilers second-round pick since Tyler Pitlick in 2010.."

https://twitter.com/Lowetide/status/1503703565352677379?ref_ src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E15037035653 52677379%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fl owetide.ca%2F2022%2F03%2F15%2F2021-22-game-60-red-wings-at-o ilers%2F

You forgot Caleb Jones

You have to be careful about criticism in a vacuum--in other words, do other teams really do much better?

I picked a team at random (got St. Louis) and looked at their 4th and later round picks and later during the same period. Here's the ones with NHL games:

Jani Hakanpaa (4th round 2010): 117 games
Petteri Lindbohm (6th round 2012): 42 games
Ville Husso (4th round 2014): 41 games
Austin Poganski (4th round 2014): 22 games
Sammy Blais (6th round 2014): 133 games
Glenn Gawdin (4th round 2015): 9 games
Niko Mikkola (5th round 2015): 79 games
Alexei Toropchenko (4th round 2017): 9 games
Joel Hofer (4th round 2018): 2 games

Lots of fringe players, but hardly anyone even on the level of Bear or Jones (Blais is the only one I've heard of). I think the perception of Oiler late round draft futility is a bit overblown. I have a feeling they're not that much worse than most teams and converting them to NHLers.

The success rate for players drafted after the first couple of rounds drops precipitously.

However, I think it's pretty notable that the Oilers have misjudged three different players who they picked, trading one for an AHL grinder, another for a 6th round pick and not even offering a contract to the third.

I mean, you would think you'd have some sense as to what you had with those guys, and each would have been useful players to have in the last decade. Technically we got Rieder back, but not for his best years.

Oilers have done better recently.. Petrov and Tullio are both near top in OHL scoring (8th and 11th respectively). Petrov was 6th round 180 overall, Tullio was 5th round 126th overall.
Still not in the NHL, but good signs.. I expect Petrov to make it for sure, kid is 6'-2" with a snipe laser shot..

Then we have Carter Savoie.. 4th round 100th overall.. one of the top NCAA scorers for 2 seasons.
he might be another depending on skating, I haven't seen him play much, can't determine his skating, but if he's at least NHL average he's a player...

I tend not to believe the hype until they've started showing something at the AHL level at least. Too many of these over the years where 1-2 years out from draft day the Oilers media is talking them up, only to have them disappear again.

The point is having 3 of the top scorers in the OHL and the NCAA from a 4th, 5th, and 6th round pick is still pretty freaking good even at this point in development. Some of the guys that Petrov and Tullio are rubbing shoulders with in the OHL scoring leader board right now were 1st rounders, or 20 year olds.

Here's to hoping the Red Wings leave Sam Gagner in Edmonton for the playoff-run.

We will send Josh Archibald back in return who should be great in the room with Tyler Bertuzzi, if no one else.
