I’ve often wondered where to put notes from practice or just general tidbits/chatter for non game days. Then it hit me... why not a fully encompassing thread?!

Welcome to the thread that fully encompasses all general Oilers talk/News that really doesn’t warrant its own individual thread!

Practice in Ottawa today saw Schmiddy return to a full practice participant, though Tipp said post practice that he’s wanted Schmiddy to get in a full practice but he won’t return tomorrow or Wednesday v Washington. Schmiddy likely back after All Star weekend.

Barrie’s timeline seems along the same as Schmiddy, return after ASG.

The irony is, unlike a lot of the beat reporters, I think the players genuinely like him. He handles interviews well, even when difficult topics come up... and players returning to Edmonton seem really happy to see him. He's not an investigative reporter, but I think he does well at what he does.

He doesn't look professional. He's got a schtick that's not for everyone (I actually don't love it). But I don't worry too much about him reflecting badly on the Oilers or Edmonton. Perhaps I'm too busy about our ownership, management, and players doing that.

I agree. He doesn't look professional and I'd to see his character evolve, but he's pretty good as an intermission host / lead question softball tosser.

The hair...It's just too much right now.

Unless I missed he cut it? Don't think I caught Gene time the last 2 games. But last I saw it was more than doubling the TV screen usage of his head.

Aside from that, I'm cool with Gene. He's like the ultimate superfan turned TV guy. But I think he actually keeps the lame biased side of being a fan under wraps. Unlike a guy like Jim Hughson who is so desperate for the Canucks to win he imagines saves being made. Or little cheap shot remarks that most fans enjoy about opposing players. IMO, when he talks about the Oilers, he never sounds like a Cassie Campbell when she talks about the Flames. He keeps it pretty straight, has fun, makes it apparent what team he likes but comments are never over the line or rude talking about or to the opposition.

Just cut that friggin hair Gene!!!

Man, I think people need that stuff. In many games over the year the only remotely entertaining thing was Gene.

I would guess Gene is possibly the nicest person on the planet, but I have actually become quite embarrassed (and tired) by the entire schtick.

I think he reflects management quite well though. Like some character out of an old MAD comic.

Do I want nice Gene removed? No.....he's just too nice, but Gene has had a pretty good run for himself here. I'll just leave it at that..

For those who care about such things:

Today marks ten years since Sam Gagner's eight point game against Chicago:

I vividly remember watching this game. The Oilers were down 2-0 after being completely lackluster in the first period and I was expecting yet another listless effort against a western powerhouse team and a likely blowout loss--and then we got this. Renney put Gagner/Hall/Eberle together for the 2nd and 3rd and they just seemed to score at will. It was so unexpected.

Funny note: the only player to play in this game who is a current Oiler: Duncan Keith. Nugent-Hopkins was in his rookie season, but missed the game due to injury.

Also, on the last Oiler goal when Gagner doesn't shoot and instead passes to Eberle for the tap-in, I bet whoever was the "if an Oiler scores five goals tonight you win a million dollars" person constantly curses Gagner for that.

The building was simply electric that night. Undoubtedly the most fun I've ever had in the building... because of hockey.

I had box seats for that game and there was a loud Chicago fan in the next box. It was amazing to watch the evolution of his evening.

I also remember someone - might have been Duncan Keith - saying that they hated the last loss in Edmonton before this and remember the crowd chanting "We want 10" as the Oilers ran up the score and they were looking for a measure of revenge...only to have us all chant "We want 10" once more (with a slightly different meaning).

I don't think that's right. The broadcast is clearly TSN (which was never associated with HNIC) and February 2, 2012 was a Thursday.

Does the radio do score and win? I can't remember. It becomes background noise that just floats through me when I'm listening and driving somewhere.

My aunt in Leduc has won a couple times. I believe it was dvds and a tfal pots and pans set. This was like 10 years ago though. No idea if it's legit now.

In my 30+ years of watching hockey you’re the second person who claims to know someone that’s won. I’m not saying it’s impossible the contest is fair and true, but I’d sure like to see the audit.

Thats what I’m saying. How many thousands of goals have been scored over the course of that contest. The second best verification I’ve ever had is a random on the internet’s aunt. I’ve never seen a name I recognized. Ive never seen a Twitter post saying someone has won a watch. No one at work has told a story about getting 20,000 save on points. Meanwhile I know like 6 people who have won the 50/50.

Incidentally the best verification I’ve gotten for score and win is also a random on the internet’s aunt, but that story was told to me in person.

I found this. Who knew San Jose had Safeway score and win and a hat trick gets someone a million.

Read again - you only get a paltry $100,000 for a hat trick. Need to get to five for the big pay day.

Your right. It does say only 4 goals for the million. The title screwed me up.

I was hoping for and act of contrition and acknowledgement of reality.

“The Edmonton Oilers apologize to their fans for misleading them. ‘Clearly we were worried our scheme wouldn’t work. It didn’t’ the general manager said when announcing Smith and Russell had been loaned to Siberia of the Russian 3rd division.

Koskinen is apparently in Covid protocol now, so we need Smith for a short time longer. No Siberia trip yet!
